DESCRIPTION

Eudora Mailbox Cleaner... Eudora mailboxes do not adhere to the standard mbox format which makes importing into other applications somewhat of a pain - the default import function for Eudora mailboxes of most mail client thus exhibit some problems, namely:

  • Most HTML and rich-text messages are not imported properly (you see all formatting tags instead of the properly formatted message)
  • All messages are imported as "unread," i.e., the original message status flags are ignored
  • Attachments in the messages are lost
  • Sent messages might lose their original date and show the date of import instead
  • There is no straightforward way for importing Eudora's nicknames into the MacOS X Address Book
  • There is no option for importing Eudora's filters

'Eudora Mailbox Cleaner' solves these problems by providing an alternate, direct import of mailboxes from Eudora into Mail or Thunderbird. Furthermore, it migrates Eudora's filters into Mail rules and directly imports Eudora nickname files into the Mac OS X Address Book or the current Thunderbird profile.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 4.8:

New features:

  • Nickname import: if no information about a contact's full name is found in the appropriate fields but the information is available in the email address field (e.g., email address entered as "First Last "), add that information to the correct fields in the address book instead of discarding it. This works for contacts as well as mailing list members.
  • Preserve label information for messages imported to Mail in 10.4/10.5 - Eudora's standard labels (1-7) will be mapped to the same text colors in Mail, the custom labels (8-15) will be mapped to background colors for easier distinction between the labels.

Improvements/bugfixes:

  • Properly deal with stray newline characters in message headers when importing mailboxes from Windows Eudora to avoid corrupt messages.
  • Make sure that the generated Date headers comply with the format as defined in RFC2822 (we had the order of day and month inverted earlier).
  • Don't try to recover attachments/embedded files whose earlier presence is quoted in an HTML message.
  • Properly recode custom headers used in Eudora filters to UTF-8 to fix the issue where no rules would be present in Mail after import.
  • Parse Date: headers lacking the weekday in the date string - even though this format clearly violates the RFC, it seems to be fairly common for some mailers.
  • Prevent attachments from being displayed twice in the imported messages (with the first attachment not containing any actual data).
  • multipart/... messages with the first part being HTML no longer show up as empty after the import if the original Eudora message started with an empty line before the HTML content.
  • Fix crash when importing Windows nickname files when the file contains a trailing EOL.
  • Fix a crash when calling CFRelease() which could occur due to incorrect TOC information for a message.
  • Fix an Address Book.framework related crash when running on 10.2.8
  • Properly import nickname files from Mac Eudora if they contain only a single entry - that entry was ignored before.
  • Fix potential cosmetic problem in the summary dialog when importing Eudora filter and/or nickname files only.
  • Adapt the "Rebuild Mailboxes" AppleScript to work correctly in MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard).
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

BCWINTERS  I've tried a few times to abandon Eudora for greener pastures but other clients have always choked on several hundred megabytes of mboxes. This weekend I tried to make the switch to Mail.app again, this time using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner.

This time it was a success!

My many, many mailboxes made the transfer swimmingly although two (out of perhaps 200) were truncated and missing some mail. A quick re-import of those individual mailboxes and all was well. This could easily have been a Eudora issue (I was suffering from some mailbox corruption, hence the switch!) but bear in mind that if you use EMC you may have to do some manual checking to make sure everything is intact.

I had two other minor problems: although colors are imported in rule sets, existing colors/labels applied to messages are NOT transferred. And the "Rebuild Mailbox" Applescript choked about 3/4 of the way through my mailboxes and I had to do the remaining boxes individually by hand.

All in all, it took me about an hour to get everything set up perfectly in Mail.app while I'm sure it would have been MUCH longer without this great little utility. Don't even attempt to make the switch without it--but just make sure you check everything one last time before deleting your Eudora files!

PEACEFREAK  Totally Amazing... I think the crash problem has been ironed out as I have just finished importing dozens of mailboxes, including some from an old Japanese Eudora without a hickup. Thank you so much. I have sent my donation to Andreas... What a guy!!

RS  Keeps crashing on one particular mailbox (Tiger 10.4.1, Mail 2.0.1, Eudora 6.2.1). Works flawlessly otherwise. Extremely fast.

DANGEROUS DAVE  This program saved my bacon tonight. I have tried to upgrade to mail.app for almost 2 years. I always had import problems. I have been using eudora since 1994 and yes i still have mails that old. Some of the database is even corrupt. Long story short I had all the issues mentioned, missing emails, incorrect dates etc. It made it a nightmare. Today i tried downloading the new eudora and it deleted my licensed version 5. So guess what, i searched, found this program and it was the missing bullet i needed. IT worked as advertised. I ran the filter program and address program included and I am set.

So I went ahead, setup gmail pop AND important my entourage mail and now Im on 1 program for my emails FINALLY! this thing was perfect!

Goodbye Eudora you were a good friend!

TXNOLE  This is an outstanding program. I have been reluctant to switch from Eudora to Mail for sometime. I hated losing all of my attachments and didn't look forward to the long process of switching my address book.

This did it in 2 seconds ... no looking back.

This is a great program ...

ANDY  helps import mailboxes and individual Eudora email addresses into mail.app, but not groups or nicknames. Too bad,

ANONYMOUS  Good app. But I want to point out that Mr Mail2Entourage can import whole mailboxes from Mail.app into Entourage in a way that no data is corrupted. It is also for free.

DISAPPOINTED  Version 1.1 simply didn't function. It stalled repeatedly on the first record and never recovered. The intention is excellent. The functionality is amateurish.
