DESCRIPTION
Pacifist is an application for Mac OS X that opens up .pkg installer packages, .dmg disk images, .zip, .tar. tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .pax, and .xar archives and more, and lets you extract or install individual files out of them. This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package (for example, if you deleted your Preview application and need to reinstall it, but not the whole operating system), or if you just like a little more control over the installation process. Pacifist can also load some archive types over HTTP, in case you want to extract just a single file from a large .zip archive without waiting for the entire archive to download. Finally, Pacifist can examine the kernel extensions installed in your system to let you see what installer installed them, and whether the installer was made by Apple or a third-party.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.6.4:
- Now ignores checksums for Mach-O binaries in Apple's Snow Leopard packages, since I have not been able to figure out why the checksums for those files appear to be corrupt.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

DUALIE Highly useful, polished, excellent app. This made it possible to install an older version of Java into Snow Leopard and save a mission-critical application from breaking. It also allowed me to install QuickTime 7 into 10.6.2 and regain the QT pro functionality. Well done! Worth the price in saved time alone. (Version 2.6.3)

CHARLESS While i appreciate your support, it is probably best to install QuickTime 7 from the Snow Leopard install disc if you need it. Installing from a package designed for Leopard or Tiger could result in damage to your OS if installed on Snow Leopard due to the possibility of overwriting Snow Leopard system components with Leopard ones. MACTECHHEAD Geeze what dumb questions below. Why not ask the developer to change rain water into oil too. LOL Pacifist is a must have tool for anyone that knows what it does. The simplicity of being able to extract a single file from an installer package without doing a full install is ingenious or using it to install something on another drive after the installer refused to install it is also very handy. Charles Srstka my hats off to you for this timely update and getting it ready for 10.6 before it even starts to ship. Pacifist is well worth it weight in gold or even platinum and this tool has no competition despite the dumb suggestions above for tools that pale in comparison. Excellent job again Charles Srstka !! My only complaint is no more BootCD. Another tool Charles Srstka made back on 10.4 but discontinued. I hope one day Charles Srstka can see it in his heart to scribble some notes how we can do the same on 10.5 and 10.6 again. (Version 2.6)

HELMO HASS of course its laways better, the only thing i still dont understand is why having an application which let you inspect packages, hexdump their contents etc etc, still DONT give us the possibility to modify contents when needed, instead of repackaging everything... that could be a very relevant dev tool and gain that little more it's still missing...

CHARLESS The .pkg format is a read-only format. The entire archive is gzipped (or sometimes bzipped) together, so that the only way to modify it would be to unpack the entire archive, make your changes, then repack the whole thing back up. Also, the .bom format used to list the files in the package is a closed format, meaning that it cannot be edited without reverse engineering, which is liable to break if Apple decides to change the format and thus not a very good idea. So really, the best way to edit a package is to unpack its entire contents, make your changes to the files on the disk, and then use PackageMaker to make a new package. (Version 2.6)
