JPWGIBSON  Indeed; it was the wholel "ASAP" that seemed a little over the top - especially considering what the developer charges for this app.

BRIAN BERGSTRAND  This is a bug in the 10.6/10.6.1 Finder. It displays the desktop icon window at the desktop level instead of at the desktop icon level (as all previous OS X versions did). This results in a conflict between CD and the desktop icon window.

The simple workaround is just to click on the "blank" desktop, this will bring the Finder's icon window to the front.

A more permanent workaround involves Terminal. Quit CD and then run the following:

defaults write org.bergstrand.changedekstop SDLevel -bool true

This forces CD's window to run below the Desktop level. However it does not work correctly with multiple monitors.

I filed a bug with Apple over a month ago, but I don't know if/when it will be fixed.

XENOPHILE  This looked promising. Downloaded, installed, and fired it up. Created a few sets containing folders where I keep all my desktop images. Then I tried selected different sets, and they were empty. A few minutes of trial and error left me with nothing.

To summarize, I did not find ChangeDesktop very intuitive, and its promised feature set does not compel me to bother learning how it works, at least not when desktop picture preferences are built into OS X. I understand it's freeware, but still, I expect more polish in a version "3" app. Maybe version "4" will be the charm...

BLUEATRIA  I love this app. It does much more than the standard wallpaper settings and does it very well. I really like being able to change the wallpaper whenever I want with a hotkey. Also the effects provided are very nice and are more extensive than the system provides.

It would be nice if this could run as a preference pane although the app is great as it is. I hope you keep doing further development. It would be nice to see the option of specifying photo websites such as flickr as a source for example.

CLANCEY  I agree with studioarsenic. OSX does this itself. And it has some very nice effects as well.

BRIAN BERGSTRAND  As stated in the Requirements, Change Desktop requires a "Core Image accelerated video card". The FX 5200 does not support Core Image acceleration.

PINOYFRATERNITY  this is something OSX can already do for your desktop. why would you want or need a 3rd party software to do soemthing the OS can already natively do?

BRIAN BERGSTRAND  The OS function has limitations: there's only 1 transition effect, you can only select one source for random images and that source is not auto-updated when it changes on disk. If you are happy with the system one, than bully for you, but some people aren't happy with it.

Why don't you give it a try and see for yourself why it's better?

STEVEN GOODHEART  Fantastic! The best desktop image changer I ever used on the Mac is not only back, but it's better than ever. I'd give this six stars, if I could -- it's that good, that slick.

It's so easy to make customized image sets, whether you use iPhoto, Aperture, or choose your own image folders via dialog box and the Finder. Plus, check out how smart the "Smartfit" feature is....I *love* how the program deals with a mix of small and big images so that you get the best display for each size, and not pixillation when smaller images are blown up too big, as happens with one-size-fits-all settings in the Mac OS Desktop and ScreenSaver module, or vice versa, a big image gets cropped or distorted to fit. Plus, you can tell the program to just ignore images smaller than a certain pixel size.

The Smart Background color is cool, too, though most of my images are too big for it to show up much, but when doing small images, it's cool how often the background color feels right.

But the definite "wow" and eye-candy factor is the new and way, way cool transitions between images. I love watching the various ways the images change, and just set the transitions to "Random" so I can enjoy them all. (The Copy Machine setting is a riot!) And of course, you can customize the time between transitions and how long they take to happen.

I've been a user of ChangeDesktop since it's origin, and I was so bummed that it had not been updated for so long, and thus had problems with later versions of the Mac OS. But the wait was worth it -- the totally rewritten version is simply awesome, and still, unbelievably, free (though I'm going to make a donation, for sure). Check it out, you'll be amazed at how great this program is.

STEVEN GOODHEART  Uh, no, I'm not the developer, any more than you were the developer when you sang the praises of VisualHub in one of your posts.

I happen to be a science textbook writer/editor and have been a Mac user since the day I saw Steve Jobs show the first Mac at the old John Hancock building here in Boston over 24 years ago. Over the years I've beta tested dozens and dozens of good, bad, and ugly Mac programs, just for the fun of it.

It's too bad that some people are so cynical that when someone gets enthusiastic about a program, they think the person must have some hidden or ulterior motive. I have no relationship whatsoever with ChangeDesktop other than being a very satisfied user since the its first appearance. If you check my other posts on other programs, you'll see that, yes, I'm very enthusiastic about good Mac programs -- but does that mean I'm also the developer of DevonThink Pro, or MacJournal, or HistoryHound, or Safari Stand, or any of the other great programs I've used every day and reviewed here? No. Your cynicism flies in the face of the facts.

ANAD REGNILLAPS  I have used this program for years and loved every minute of it.

Upgraded to Tiger and it doesn't seem to be working correctly.

Show Menu Extra is grayed out and I can't change any options below the "line" on the "Options" tab.

If anyone has any answers please post.

ADAM YAP  First of all, what an *excellent* piece of software, and still very relevant in the post Jaguar age. More power is a good thing, Apple gives "basic" functionality, and now this committed freeware developer gives us advanced functionality. Kudos :)

Now here comes me feature request :)

The one thing I'm pining for (and if any other app does this, PLEASE tell me) is a better resize option.

The problem are desktop images which are high resolution and portraint aspect ratio. These include some of my favourite photos.

Tile and centre don't resize the image so you end up seeing a random bit (since your average camera takes 4-6 megapixel images now). But resize just skews the aspect ratio. What I'd like it a "Fit to Screen" that preserves the aspect ratio, with black (or whatever) bars to take up the rest of the space. That would be a KILLER feature for me.
