DESCRIPTION
FinderPop is a Universal preference pane that extends OS X's contextual menus using a FinderPop Items folder much as the Apple Menu Items folder used to do for the Apple menu.

It has other features too:

  • Control-free popup in the Finder - handy for those with one-button mice.
  • A launcher that takes up zero screen real estate, merely a click on any blank area of menubar away,
  • A handy filesystem browser, allowing quick and easy access to files and disks in the Finder,
  • A Processes menu (Command-click a blank menubar area.)
  • Fast access to 'Where's that dratted file I had on the Desktop?' (Shift-Click a blank menubar area.)
  • A comprehensive collection of vaguely beer-related aphorisms in the Aboutbox.

Please use the FinderPop Help button in the preference pane; there are many features in FP that are not immediately obvious. I'm working on it :-) The FAQ in the Help is also worth a read. Most UI elements have fairly comprehensive help tags, so just hover the mouse over something if you're not sure. The manual is also available online.

KNOWHOWE  Wow, it's back! I'm SO happy to have FinderPop back on my Mac. Massive thanks for that Turly. I'll slip you a few bob for a bevvy when I can...

I've always missed the Apple Menu. After its demise, I long used Unsanity's FruitMenu and when that died under Snow Leopard, have been using XMenu. Until now that is.

FinderPop is the best thing to happen to my Mac in ages. All I need now is by beloved WindowShade to be updated for SL and I'll once again be truly productive. Mind you, the way Unsanity's shaping up, I'm not holding my breath...

Hey Turley, you're the sort of genius who understands what we really need to make our Macs work- so how about knocking out a replacement for WindowShade? You'd make a fortune mate. My money's waiting!

What possesses Apple to get rid of oh-so-useful functions such as configurable contexual menus and window shading anyway?

KNOWHOWE  "Windowshade beta for SL is available through Twitter"

And that's a good thing? Who needs it. I really can't believe such great software, and the huge number of people who really appreciate it, is subject to such abuse. How long has Snow Leopard been out now? We'll be onto 10.7 before Unsanity get their fingers out.

Apologies to Turly for the rant. There are precious few bits of add-on software I have always considered indispensable for every Mac I've owned. FinderPop is one and WindowShade the other. I've happily been reunited with one but really miss the other and can't believe there aren't any number of third-party replacements available...

LROWAN  FP has been from years ago one of these wonderful apps that you almost forget how good it is until you can't use it as it has happened with the regrettable accident of Turly. Even so he has continued working on it, so, thank you, Turly. I think you deserves our Pintware contribution (even more being for a good cause ;-)). MdP

AN.ONYMOUS  Apparently the author has well recovered from his accident in Barcelona. This town is by far the European champion for robbery (eg I got two MacBook Pros stolen there and all my friends were robbed in the street or in the hotels) but it is (was) not so famous for circulation accidents.

Anyway, FinderPop is working brilliantly on Leopard now, and it is more useful than ever.

Note that unlike indicated, it is necessary to reboot after installation to have FP work properly.

Congrats Turly.

FRANK-TWO  This is really great stuff. I've been using it for years and never any problems. I even bought Turly a couple of pints a few years back. You don't really know how much help it is unless you try it. Do yourself a favor and install it now.

MLBKXBX  I'm running 2.2.4b8 (BETA obviously) with SL 10.6.2 and for me it works well enough.

The settings UI is a little bit messy, and personally i think it's a little bloated (feature bloat, that is, so one can argue that's a good thing, LOL). But fortunately i can turn off much of what i don't want :)

The only thing i use it for, is to attach my own directories to the contextual menu, so that i may copy/move files there, or browse them quickly from the "desktop" contextual menu.

Looking forward to see what future releases can bring. Personally, I wouldn't mind a bit more spit and polish. It's hard to put my finger on it, but as i said, it feels a little bit messy ATM. Other than that, this is a very useful addition to OS X (one that i wouldn't mind to have built in to the finder really).

KOSOVAR1  FinderPop was the cat's meow until we users started upgrading to Snow Leopard and 64-bit, as I did from day 1 SL was released. I was very sorry to see right away that FinderPop was severely crippled under the SL. For me, the hierarchal folder items list doesn't work even under Finder and only under just a few apps when they are in the fore. I am extremely grateful to Mr. Turley for making this utility available to users at no cost and so I will not complain if he chooses not to fix the bugs. Nevertheless, I will miss FinderPop because it was one of the best of its class. I also just read he had some type of accident, so we should all wish him well and perhaps make some extra donations to help him pull through this misfortune without too big a financial hit.

KOBALT  You might like to become one of the FinderPop! Thrilseekers and give the beta a whirl.

KOSOVAR1  I think I did try the beta, but I run my new iMac in full 64-bit mode. Unsurprisingly--I ran into the same problems I found on the earlier versions of FinderPop.

MAX GAAV  With much pleasure I used FinderPop for years. Thank you Turly!

But as said by others as well, it doesn't funtion properly with Snow Leopard. And to be honest, before, in Leopard it also did not work flawless when Excel or Filemaker Pro was the active app.

I thus tried several launchers and contextual menu modifiers and one of them has become my favorite, even over FP. And, like FP, it is free: XMenu 1.9 (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13797/xmenu).

Same functionality as FP (though now from an icon in the menubar) but also other features like the very handy 'snippets'. It takes a bit time to study the settings etc. but in the end that's just a small hurdle to take for such a wonderfull workflow improvement tool.

SAMUEL222  I love FindePop, but... I switched to Snow Leopard. Version 2.2.2 does work with

32 bit apps, but finder is now 64. So, you can see your FinderPop clicking on the

menu bar, but if not finder is acting, but, say, Safari. This makes this wonderful

app useless, at least for me, because I can put any my app's to the Doc.

Well, let us wait until FinderPop works for 64 bit apps.
