FinderPop is a Universal preference pane that extends OS X's contextual menus using a FinderPop Items folder much as the Apple Menu Items folder used to do for the Apple menu.
It has other features too:
- Control-free popup in the Finder - handy for those with one-button mice.
- A launcher that takes up zero screen real estate, merely a click on any blank area of menubar away,
- A handy filesystem browser, allowing quick and easy access to files and disks in the Finder,
- A Processes menu (Command-click a blank menubar area.)
- Fast access to 'Where's that dratted file I had on the Desktop?' (Shift-Click a blank menubar area.)
- A comprehensive collection of vaguely beer-related aphorisms in the Aboutbox.
Please use the FinderPop Help button in the preference pane; there are many features in FP that are not immediately obvious. I'm working on it :-) The FAQ in the Help is also worth a read. Most UI elements have fairly comprehensive help tags, so just hover the mouse over something if you're not sure. The 2.1 manual is also available online.
Version 2.1.2:
- fixes a problem with certain Cocoa applications.
- new patching mechanism using Unsanity's APELite
- now with Swedish, Japanese, French and (partial) Danish. Yum!

KENPRESLEY Thanks, Turly. Version 2.1.2 is definitely more stable. I still noticed a sidebar related Finder crash (opening Favorires from the sidebar), but it is not very reproducible. It seems to happen only the first(?) time I access something in the sidebar. Anyway, looks very good now! (Version 2.1.2)

THELION Yes I'll stick with the previous version. APE has always caused trouble when upgrading my system. No Unsanity products for me. I'll wait till Finder Pop 2.1 stops working! OSX 10.5.2 (Version 2.1.2)

UNIONMAC THAT was quick! Thanks, Turly, for your quick response and for the link to FP210. I just reinstalled FP210 and it works just fine; still don't know why FP212 doesn't work on my system (10.4.11), but I'll post on FinderPop Support forum at www.fnarr.net/fp when I do. (Version 2.1.2)

UNIONMAC Love FP and Turly's approach to marketing it, but FP 2.1.2 doesn't work on my system (10.4.11). I also use FruitMenu, and that may be conflicting with FP 2.1.2, but it didn't with the previous version of FP, which is, apparently, unavailable for downloading. (Version 2.1.2)

TURLY Sorry, forgot to update the webpage. Previous version is available here: http://www.finderpop.com/FP210.zip Could you please use the FinderPop Support forum http://www.fnarr.net/fp and detail exactly what doesn't work with FruitMenu?

MACSTERDAM I realy like Finderpop, but Unsanity's Ape would definitely be a reason to uninstall this. (Version 2.1.2)

TURLY Whoa, some serious anti-APE feelings here and in numerous emails people sent me. To clarify: FinderPop is COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT of the APE installer. FinderPop does not install APE. The APE control panel is completely unaware of FinderPop's existence, and vice-versa. What happens is that FinderPop now uses the same code as APE to "patch" the system calls which allow FinderPop to do its stuff. This APE patching code is tiny, less than 0.1% of FinderPop code, has not changed since 2003, and has not caused a crash since then. Unsanity supply a small object file containing this patching code. Because it's better than the patching code I was using previously, I use it. It is more flexible, uses less memory, and (obviously) is compatible with other Unsanity products, should the user happen to be using any. This was not the case previously - if the user was running FinderPop and a haxie that happened to "patch" the same things simultaneously, it often resulted in a crash. No longer. If there's a FinderPop-related crash, the bug will be in MY code, not the 150-odd lines of "APE" code that actually does the patching. I think all the bad press that APE gets is not APE's fault per se, but bugs in various haxies (possibly including Unsanity's own, it has to be said.) Please let me know if that doesn't explain things or if you have information which contradicts any of the above, which is my understanding.

LEO SPILL Well thank you for taking the time to reply, Very gracious of you. Especially as I haven't purchased you a beer in well over five years ( I did buy 5-6 back then, but I am sure that went quite quickly) (Version 2.1.2)

TURLY Hi, those Cocoa crashes have been fixed in the latest beta - see http://www.fnarr.net/fp/viewtopic.php?t=51 (Version 2.1)

MACUPDATE ADMIN Turly, why is it that you can find time to post here in the reviews advising people of a new beta when you can't seem to find the time to submit the latest version(s) to MacUpdate when they come available? I very nearly posted this new beta, but then I noticed the advisory that you did not want this new beta posted to the usual sites such as MacUpdate. I'll be expecting to get the latest version, when it is ready, submitted to MacUpdate before any other site. Thanks. (Version 2.1)

MACUPDATE ADMIN You're a gentleman, Turly, thanks for submitting the latest version (2.1.2). (Version 2.1.2)

KENPRESLEY Great utility, I used it a lot under Tiger. However, it is still a quite a bit unstable under 10.5.2. I have a vanilla Intel mac-mini and I noticed various sidebar-related Finder crashes and a Netscape Navigator (9.0.0.6) crash with FinderPop 2.1. I do plan on using this utility again when it stabilizes! (Version 2.1)

DANA SUTTON Because it has taken Unsanity so long to come up with Leopard-friendly haxies, I've been scrambling around for other and less invasive utilities that do the same thing. For ex., I've found that the Macro feature on Keyboard Maestro works every bit as well as Menu Master. But until now I've not found a really satisfactory substitute for Fruit Menu. But this is it! It can be made to do pretty much every important thing that FM can do (on his blog Maury explains how you can use aliases to make FP give you a menu of individual System Preference panels). It's easy to install and use, and at least so far seems to be rock-solid. (Version 2.1)
