DESCRIPTION
WindowShade X provides an exciting and useful way of organizing your work on Mac OS X. With this handy tool, you can assign the following actions to the minimize button and a double-click on the window title:
- Minimize the window to the Dock, like always;
- "Windowshade" the window into a tiny strip to quickly peek below or get it out of the way;
- Minimize-In-Place the window so it becomes really small so you can move it out of the way yet still see what is going on;
- Make the window transparent so you can continue working in it while seeing things under it;
- Make window float on top;
- Hide the application quickly;
- Do nothing and ignore the action (sometimes it is quite useful as well).
WHAT'S NEW
Version 4.3:
- Improved support for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard v10.5 and later.
- Fixed a bug with auto-ordering of minimized in place windows.
- Tweaked the interface of the preference pane.
- Other fixes.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later.

KNOWHOWE Night after night I check out MacUpdate to see if Unsanity have at last got their fingers out and released a Snow Leopard compatible version of my beloved WindowShade- and night after night I am, unsurprisingly, disappointed. How can such brilliant software be the exclusive possession of such a bunch of... well, supply your own expletive. I apologise for my uncharacteristic rudeness, Unsanity, but really... we'll be welcoming in OS X 10.7 before you lot get off your useless arses to release an update for 10.6. Really. Surely they mst be another developer out there who could take on creating something that does the same job? (are you listening Apple? For God's sake- you had it and threw it away, you idiots). Make a decent go of it, charge a reasonable fee and we'll come flocking in our thousands. You'll be a rich man- or woman- before you know it. I wish I had the technical expertise. And then we can all collectively extend two fingers (an English gesture- for Americans, just one will suffice I gather) in the general direction of Unsanity that they so richly deserve. JONANGUS Was just about to buy WindowShade X. Since I soon intend to shift to Snow Leopard you've stopped me in my tracks. Many thanks for the warning. (Version 4.3)

KNOWHOWE My pleasure. Well, not really. It's a bloody disgrace isn't it? COME ON developers- please do us, and yourselves, a big favour and sort this out. How hard can it be? (actually, I have no idea how hard it wold be, but you get my well-intended point I hope). I've had SL installed for months now and I'm still bloody double-clicking on title bars... (Version 4.3)

EASER Excuse me, but if you read several comments below yours, you'll see that a few months ago, I offered to contact developers to see if they'd be willing to provide some competition. What I needed were responses from people who might be willing to donate to that cause. (And I would have helped set up whatever would make donors feel safe about the matter.) And a mere 3 people responded. And despite such a paltry response, I still contacted several developers to try to stir up interest. Nada. That tells me that most people out there simply do not care about this. Certainly, Apple does not care. I eventually opted to stick with Leopard because I find windowshading indispensable to how I work. (Version 4.3)

VA_GREYBEARD MacUpdate should revise the requirements for Unsanity products like WindowShade X to state that their products are NOT compatible with Snow Leopard. "10.4.x and above" is incorrect! (Version 4.3)

DRDAD Windowshade is so good at what it does that I remain disappointed that I didn't know ahead of time that it wouldn't work with Snow Leopard. (Version 4.3)

EASER If only. Alas, do you know of any other windowshading programs out there? Apple won't do it. If you read further down these comments, I offered to try to find other developers who might do it; they won't. If you want to windowshade, Unsanity has you by the b@lls. (Version 4.3)

KNOWHOWE "MacUpdate should revise the requirements for Unsanity products like WindowShade X to state that their products are NOT compatible with Snow Leopard." More to the point, MacUpdate should take the trouble to read the all the reviews here from pissed-off customers and tell Unsanity to either get their fingers out and release an update or pass the code on to someone who can OR face being banned from publicising their products on the site in the future. We don't come here to be messed around and lied to. (Version 4.3)

DONEBYLEE For the fun of it I just checked Unsanity's website and what to my wondering eyes appeared? "Unsanity is still hard at work on Snow Leopard compatibility for the rest of our stuff and will be announcing availability as things become ready. Look for posts from Slava and Rosyna about WindowShade

BBB Don't buy WindowShadeX if you intend to use Snow Leopard. It doesn't work. Besides, I'd like to warn everybody for the lousy support offered by the manufacturer: none at all. I've been trying to contact them to report bugs, no reply. Report anything as often you want, to any of their e-mails published on their website (support, feedback or sales): one thing is guaranteed: you will never get a reply, whatsoever. I decided to ask my money back (they offer a 90 day money back guarantee, but... you guessed right: no response). I think this is a one person company and the developer either doesn't care at all about customers after they paid or he is suffering from the mexican flew and rotting away behind his overflowing mailbox.... (maybe we are even better off that way, no need for such rip-offs in this world). (Version 4.3)

EASER Out of curiosity, and I'm probably out of my league here, could the PowerPC only version of Windowshade (from days of yore) possibly work via Rosetta? I don't have that anymore, but maybe someone who does would be willing to try? (Version 4.3)

EASER Never mind. Found an old version, tried it, should have known better. I will now go into meditation to try to unfix my obsession. It's obvious I must learn to live without this. (Version 4.3)

EASER I have a proposal. Given how long Unsanity took to get this program to even start to work in Leopard, and given their current (apparent) indifference to Snow Leopard, I hold very low hopes of seeing any development in at least several months. (That's not unrealistic; look back on how long it took to get a Leopard version.) And even after several months, I don't expect a fully working version. Even their last Leopard version still had bugs despite their claims to the contrary. And it seems we are all tired of this. So, there must be a slew of competent developers out there who could also come up with some means of window shading. I don't know if we could have all of the bells and whistles. For myself, I just need the ability to collapse the window with either a hot key or double-clicking the title bar; but I do recognize that others like minimize-in-place and so on. Anyway, I doubt that any one of us has the money to pay a developer, but perhaps if we could arrange some kind of PayPal (or something) donation, then collectively we could entice someone to take on the project. Honestly, I don't know if this is even a plausible or good idea, but if you think it has any merits, let me know which developer(s) you think would be trustworthy and up to the task, and I would be willing to contact them with the proposal. I can't see that we'd have much to lose by asking. (Version 4.3)

DONEBYLEE I agree with the sentiment. I would vote for Paul Kim, developer of Hazel (http://www.noodlesoft.com). Or Jon Nathan, developer of Dialectic (http://www.jonn8.com/dialectic/). Both of them have always been very responsive and helpful and, from what I have seen of their interaction with other developers, very honorable. (Version 4.3)

EASER I will wait one week for replies, then compile the list of names and contact them. Let's see if others have a similar response. (Version 4.3)

JULIFOS I use to be trusty, but I must agree with EASER with two facts: no news or plans at Unsanity and the transition to Leopard was very long and frustrating, so short in the time the living of the last release of WS! And one more with DONEBYLEE: it's so ***** useful... I don't know either if this is a good idea, but I'd be willing to pay a new license for the same task in every OS release! (Version 4.3)

DEVASKA1 I can't live without this program ugggg! I'd be willing to donate some $ to the brave soul who can make window collapsing in Snow Leopard a reality....
| Sep 15 2009 |
EASER Hmm, the dearth of responses here suggests that either no one is using Snow Leopard, no one is using WindowShade, or no one cares. Nonetheless, I contact the developers who were nominated. I also contacted the guy who makes Dark Adapted. He's done some work for me in the past and is very good. I'll let you know if any of them reply. (Version 4.3)

EASER Sorry guys, it's not going to happen. I contacted the developers you suggested as well as a few others, and all seem to agree that this is just too nasty a type of project to take on. I can't believe that Apple can make expose but not a simple window shade. Heck, I can even windowshade Windows with shareware. (Version 4.3)
| Sep 27 2009 |
STROB Many people may not have switched to SL yet to respond here. I would participate since I just bought a MBP in addition to my Tiger PM which apparently has just done broke. Thank you Apple. WindowShadeX was invaluable and I would contribute $. Apparently even the Unsanity installers don't work anymore on SL. (Version 4.3)

LONSMAN Great ideas!!! Just having the window close to a bar with a double-click would be more than sufficient for most of us. Indispensible. I ABSOLUTELY NEED this capability. (Curse you Apple for ever abandoning this feature and going for a Windows look, far inferior.) I'd defin. kick in some dough. anyone come forward yet?? (Version 4.3)

RUSSELL GLEASON Running 10.6 Snow Leopard and windowshade doesn't work. I was hoping for a smooth transition (concerning the move from Leopard to Snow Leopard) concerning WindowShade but of course that wasn't the case. Why Apple never carried the windowshade feature from O/S 9.X to OS 10.X to begin with is beyond me. (Version 4.3)

EASER Indeed, it is of immense value to be able to momentarily collapse a window to read info. underneath it. I do this when working between my budget spreadsheet and online bank statement. Expose is nifty but nowhere near as functional. I assume Apple's been contacted about this numerous times. (Version 4.3)

DONEBYLEE I have emailed Unsanity and of course I never received a reply. You would think that they would have at least some mention of the problem on their website, but no. No replies to customers. No stated acknowledgement that their product was rendered unusable by the latest OSX update. No timetable for a fix. I wish Windowshade X weren't so d@^^*d useful. (Version 4.3)
| Sep 5 2009 |
EASER They don't even mention the existence of Snow Leopard. Surely, can there not be some other developer(s) out there who see the demand and need for window shading? They'd likely make a small fortune. (Version 4.3)

YOXI Well, APE works in Snow Leopard, but WindowShade et al all say this has not been tested in 10.6 and has therefore been disabled. Let's hope the wait isn't very long - I'm on autopilot using the amber blob for Hide. (Version 4.3)
