MOOFTHESTOOF  I purchased the upgrade to 8.6 just a couple of months ago, and would really be upset if I had to pay $50 per license to get the 8.7 upgrade. Thankfully, I've not missed TB2, yet, because the screensharing feature built into 10.5 does the task admirably. Now, I haven't yet tried it on machines outside my LAN, but since I never did with TB2 either, I'm not sweating it.

KIDDAILEY  According to the site, it's $4.95 to upgrade from 8.6 to 8.7. I'm tempted to email them and see about getting a free upgrade since the only change they list is that it works with Leopard... and 8.6 already does work with Leapord (I'm using it right now)

KG5NA  I noticed the update and tried to find what it covered at Netopia's website. They don't seem to claim anything new except 10.5 compatibility. I bought the 8.6 update when it came out and didn't see any changes s I don't use skype. I just installed 10.5 last night. I noticed the TB2 icon was not in the menu, but when I ran the program it popped up. Under 10.5 TB2 8.6 seems to connect a lot faster. I have not noticed any problems with TB2 8.5 on 10.5 so what's the upgrade for? Maybe just to get $4.95? Post a link if you find any updates please.

TOMNIBUS  Um.... I PAID for the upgrade. When I put in my username/password and get to the download screen it says to download the 8.6 CD! What the heck is up with that?!

TOMNIBUS  I had to change the download URL from 86 to 87 and I was able to find the 8.7 files.

MAC STEVEN  I bit the bullet and downloaded Timbuktu Pro, hoping to get even better fullscreen display update performance from my Belkin gigabit networked Mac and Windows PC.

It turns out that Chicken of the VNC running against TightVNC server on a PC machine is at least as fast as the multi-platform Timbuktu Pro version 8.5.

So don't waste your time trying TB2Pro - Chicken is just as fast for $200 less.

HUBI SCHULZE  I was not able to set any prefs on ssh-compression and technical support send me this:

There is not a way to set commpression using a Mac platforms.

so, an ssh-tunnel with compression enabled is still be best way *hmpf*

ANONYMOUS  While I'm using my Windows 2000 PC at work, I use Timbuktu to control my Mac at home. There's nothing built into The Mac OS that will allow you to do that. VNC can work and it's free, but I would argue that Timbuktu offers a superior experience.

MACMAN  Timbuktu offers a vastly superior experience -- even over Apple Remote Desktop, which is itself VNC-based.

PAUL92  MacOSX has built in VNC, but Timbuktu is far superior. I am reluctant to upgrade while version 7 is working well for me at the moment.

DOUG B  I've upgraded Timbuktu from v6 to v7 and couldn't be more pleased. The greatest new feature is being able to set the port (other than 407) to whatever is needed without having to run an Applescript to change the port invisibly. Connectivity using email address to IP through Netopia's IP locator service is far more reliable for me as well.

The toughest part has always been getting the connection through all the myriad brands of routers and with complicating factors such as web proxies. Once initial setup is debugged getting your port forwarding mapped to your IP, it's a dream!
