PEHPSI.3  Great app, but PLEASE add the ability to send, not just receive, custom smileys..! The day this comes to Adium, the day I will use it and finally trash Microsoft Messenger :)

Cheers.

CASTLE ROSE  I have used and loved Adium for years. As much as I love my Powerbook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. DON'T drop support for 10.4.11! So many developers have and it's ridiculous to drop support for an OS that is only a few years old.

ROBBY.IS.ON  10.4 will be dropped for Adium 1.4. If you think it's ridiculous feel free to backport it.

To be quite honest, I don't think you're in the position to tell volunteers how to develop a free programme in their free time.

ILGAZ  If you explain ordinary users (Adium's target) for exactly what reason 10.4.11 support will be dropped and what can be done to stop the drop, it wouldn't sound like "trendy developers ignores users running old OS X".

Of course, as a curse to Adium, "supporters" like you must offend them for a simple message. Guess what? Everyone doesn't know the differences between supporting 10.4.11 and 10.5.x+, they have no clue with the XCode tricks Apple plays to push Developers either.

Here is a tip: Stop offending ordinary users on behalf of Adium especially if you haven't contributed a cent or a line to the project.

AARGL  Well, we're a lot, out there, bound to Tiger for a number of reasons, why should we remain silent?

Of course, developpers do what they want, but each time a shareware developper abandons an "old" system, it drops hundreds or thousands of users and potential buyers. That's their own choice.

Freeware authors are even more free... ;-)

If they still offer a link for the "last Tiger version", there's nothing to complain about. Many don't do, and THAT is ridiculous.

ROBBY.IS.ON  Ilgaz:

I contribute to the Adium Project, thanks.

Something's wrong when volunteer developers have to explain themselves if they don't want to be attacked and when users of free software prefer the notion of "trendy developers ignore users running old OS X" to "there must be a reason why they are dropping an OS that is four years old".

Calling something "ridiculous" is not a "simple message" where I come from and is more of an offence than my reaction.

Aargl:

"If they still offer a link for the "last Tiger version", there's nothing to complain about. " - the Project does, even a version for 10.3 is listed. :)

ILGAZ  I mean there is a reason for VLC dropping 10.4.11 support, it is very technical but it is a valid reason, they can't carry on with the enhancements to VLC with caring about Tiger and guess what? It is something related to Apple and Apple not supporting a very crucial thing for them on 10.4.11. One must be insane to think Apple will add it to 10.4.11 with an update (it is related to kernel and core frameworks). The issue is, VLC team wasn't open about it so they got blamed as result.

As a pure, state of art (IMHO) Cocoa Application which also runs a Unix core "engine", Adium must also have a reason to drop 10.4.11 support. Instead of aggressively posting replies, you guys can put the technical explanation to "what's new" so users who already feel abandoned by Apple, other software vendors all the time these days won't target Adium developers.

Everyone isn't that technical and in fact, many advanced Windows developers doesn't know how Apple philosophy is different from other vendors like Microsoft. So, when they see "10.4.11 isn't supported", they automatically think "ah trendy developer abandoned me" while it is not the case most of the time. Of course, if enough people donated, one of the developers can have a 10.4.11 PPC Mini and somehow it can be supported unless it is a core frameworks/kernel issue like VLC. I agree to that.

SHOCK J  Suddenly I can't login to Facebook. A Captcha windows opens and says "Facebook thinks you're not you. To prove you are, please enter your date of birth." It then provide 3 fields for year, month and day, but no matter how I enter the correct info, it just keeps cycling. The fields are pre-populated with zeros, so I assume they want numerical values, but nothing works. Not 1, not 01, not Jan not January, nothing. Anybody else seeing this?

SHOCK J  Downloaded Adium 1.4b13, which says it fixes the FB captcha issue, but still no go. Instead of asking me for DOB, now it asks for two word phrase, but it still won't accept any response and won't log me in. I enter 10 in a row and I know most of them were correct. Apparently FB has changed something. Lame.

ROBOTANK  I have the same issue. I've tried both 1.3.8 and 1.4b13 with the same result. I wonder if Facebook is deliberately blocking external programs from logging into its chat, or if it's just a matter of some change in Facebook's code making Adium's current method of logging in no longer valid?

SHOCK J  OK, I'm a huge fan of Adium and the development team is usually on point with problems, but what just happened here? They release an update to fix a specific issue and is just flat out doesn't work. It's not like this is a hard to replicate issue. It happens every time...can't login to Facebook. I certainly appreciate their enthusiasm to release a fix, but how about waiting until it actually works before you release it.

STILL_SPARKLING  Adium is perhaps the single most famous, high-quality free app that makes Windows users gnash their teeth in envy. The praise it receives is richly deserved: it's been a stable, full-featured workhorse on most Mac users systems for years. Yes, video chat would be awesome, but from the steady pace of updates Adium receives, I know if this were possible, we'd already have it. It's still the best chat client on the Mac platform, imo.

Keeping that in mind, I'd like to offer a bit of constructive criticism:

1. The Adium homepage really needs an update. There's nothing "wrong" with it per se, but, considering the amount of traffic it must receive, it could use a refresh to make it more streamlined and user-friendly. A bit of color wouldn't hurt either.

2. The Wiki and videos and are nice, but most news users don't want to watch videos or plow through a wiki after installing a new app, they want to start using it right away. This is especially important for visual apps like Adium. A QuickStart guide with plenty of screenshots would be a helpful addition to the homepage.

3. The app itself could use a bit of a touch-up from a user interface standpoint. One of the most common features of any chat client is the ability to make the window(s) stay on top of other apps. In Adium, this is hidden under Preferences-->Advanced-->Messages-->Window Handling (uncheck "Hide While Adium Is In The Background). There are further, separate options for the Contacts list and the Status Window. Clunky and confusing. A simple solution is to use View or Window "Stay on Top".

4. The Xtras: one of the best things about Adium! The Xtras should be able to be browsed and installed from within the app, much like Unsanity's Shapeshifter. Those bozos from Unsanity may have cashed out and left their users in the lurch, but they did have an elegant way of browsing through and installing themes. I think that method is superior to the one Adium uses, where you have to click each individual item on the Xtras page to look at and/or install something. Failing that, add some javascript to the Xtras page so the user can hover over an image without clicking, to get a zoomed view of the contents.

Okay, I'm off to donate again. I really do love Adium and appreciate all the hard work that goes into it. Thanks, folks!
