DESCRIPTION
QuicKeys is software that makes it easier to use your computer. With QuicKeys you can automate common things you do all the time. And you can automate tedious things you don't do all the time — things that are hard to remember.

With QuicKeys 4 you can automate your computer in two ways: Abbreviations and Shortcuts. Abbreviations, which are new in QuicKey 4, are words you type into a document that are then automatically replaced by QuicKeys with longer text. Shortcuts are collections of one or more steps that perform specific tasks on your computer.

Make a New Record Shortcuts are the main way you automate your computer using QuicKeys. Shortcuts are very powerful, but are super easy to make. That's because QuicKeys can make them for you by recording practically anything you can do. All you have to do is tell QuicKeys when to start recording and when to stop recording. QuicKeys will then make a new Shortcut containing steps that reproduce your actions.

Of course, if you want you can always create and edit Shortcuts by hand. You can even edit your recorded Shortcuts later if you want to have them do something different.

One Small Step… Like we said, Shortcuts are collections of one or more steps. The steps in a Shortcut are the heart of what QuicKeys does. Each step in a Shortcut performs a specific task to do something on your computer.

Some examples are typing text, opening an application, clicking a button, or making a menu selection. For virtually anything you can do on your computer there is a QuicKeys step or a combination of steps that can do the same thing.

Let's Get it Started! When you want to use a Shortcut, you run it using a Trigger. The most common Trigger is a Hot Key. A Hot Key is simply a key on your computer keyboard that you press (with or without modifiers) that then triggers a Shortcut. You can set the Hot Keys that trigger your Shortcuts to whatever you want. QuicKeys also includes many other types of Triggers. Some of the other types of Triggers include Day & Time and Speech recognition.

Life's Better After a QuicKey So that, in brief, is what QuicKeys is all about. If you want to explore QuicKeys some more, download the fully functional free trial and try it out.

DINHBG  I've used QuicKeys forever (since KeyQuencer went belly-up at OS X), and have been increasingly dissatisfied with its performance. I've stuck with it because it does everything I want it to doÂ… eventually.

BUT. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, QuicKeys freezes, often taking 60 seconds or more to respond to my triggers. Pointer spins beachball over QK menu, Dock says "App Not Responding." This problem has gotten worse and worse with each OS update, and even through QK "updates" (which don't seem to have any beneficial effect whatsoever).

Even more frustrating, no one at Startly (or whatever they're called now) will admit there's a problem, or even suggest any workarounds or tests to see what could be causing it. Just "Hunh. Never heard of that."

DONMONTALVO  As much as I love QuicKeys, I'm not willing to pay the price. Especially as there are cheaper options like iKey available (that can do everything I need). QuicKeys is getting a bit bloated and the price keeps going up...

MYZTIKJENZ  Agreed, 4.0.3 is a bit unstable in Snow Leopard right now. We're working on it but to be honest, we were caught a little off-guard with the early release date. A compatible version is available on our site (http://startly.com/products/quickeys/mac/4/snowleopard/) but is still considered beta for the time being.

As for your comment about needing more advanced configuration and actions, please elaborate. QuicKeys is an extensive application and while we try to fill all the needs of our users, some people still use the application in ways we never intended. Feature requests submitted to our forums or to our Feedback form are always read and discussed.

GERBER  QuicKeys is the most powerful macro package available for the Mac. It makes it easy to handle simple automation, and without much trouble you can create highly automated workflows that trigger off just about anything. You can activate a macro based on keyboard shortcuts, which application is in the front or background, disks mounting, custom keys on your hardware devices (yup, it can support darn near any USB device, regardless of whether you have drivers specifically for it), and many other triggers.

There are other utilities and methods to automate under OS X, such as UI scripting, Automator, and less expensive automation programs (Proxy, iKey, Keyboard Maestro). This makes the high cost of QuicKeys a bit hard to swallow, but if you need to automate to the nth degree, there's nothing better.

It's also worthwhile to note that while QuicKeys X3 has been around since '04, the point updates have added fairly major new features, and all at no cost to purchasers.

DONMONTALVO  iKey does the trick for us. What kind of macros does QuicKeys handle better? Not trolling...I own both iKey and QuicKeys and would like to know if it's worth upgrading.

NATURALLY  I love this program. I find the price a gauge considering I HAD to buy it twice to run it on my desktop and laptop....I won't be paying twice to upgrade them both...NO>>>enough.

It is worth the price BUT not twice the price.

It is soarly laking in a smart and intuitive interface....it works and well and is bloating...too bad we could buy what we need and add plugs as needed and as experience finds the value.

But it is too complex and I spend too much time learning every area to the job done....it is worth it....but why does it have to be so obscure...IT NEEDS DEMO TUTORIALS....it woudl sell like gangbusters....and the price would reflect its volume...we all win....right now it is too much work for most people to start out fresh....

Up until this version (since it came out) I have never had a problem...with reliablity or price....but GUM BALLS....common it is an insult to the old timers and belies the simplicty to the newbies....you can't make everybody happy all the time...but you can pee them off all very quickly....

I have stopped recommending it because I can't afford my time to teach their customers.

I am having enough fun trying to understand the various changing terminology....

IT NEEDS MOUSE OVERS that reveal details for the newbies and the old folks too.

MYZTIKJENZ  Demo tutorials are in the works... We create them as fast as we can but it does take time to produce a quality tutorial. Suggestions on what we should focus on (other than "everything")?

    NATURALLY  Thanks for asking.

I would make a priority of mouse overs.

    FAVOURITES:

This is automatic feature which brings the most used items by you nea,r the top for your convenience....or ????

    TRIGGER

This is our term for the activator...key combination....what you do when you get so frustrated you end it all.

    SCOPE

What you need before you pull the trigger.

SHORTCUT: This is different from a TRIGGER as it is a sequence of events linked together....??

    ACTION: The result of

Then once you are finished....sit your mother down or your grandfather down and watch what they do...leave no firearms laying around.

QUICKEN is intuitive for a reason...they do the above and not all the frustrations and remove them..

This is one POWERFUL productivity tool...once you get the hang of it...but it is not for the attention challenged....or time strapped.

THIS SHARPENS YOUR AXE ...SO WE CAN ALL CUT MORE WOOD....but many will give up trying to find the sharpening stone...grind stone....if you call it a hard wheel....stone round thing...axe shaper...

Remember we are not all chewing bubble gum and frequenting the Kinder Surprise Machines...and high on coke...liquid or otherwise...some who can afford your software are over 22 years of age...they don't think the same way....no my phone does not have to be hand winded to get a signal...

Thanks for bring us an AMAZING piece of software....now make it useable, stable and easily assimliated by everyone...and affordable....the numbers will make up for reduced price....we are all your salesmen...but as I said I can't take time to teach it...once I say it is so good you just have to get it...they do and then say....I don't think so...you need to save face and show'em how...NO...thats your job.

    Cheers.

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS  QuicKeys has no competition, I tried them all but nothing is comparable to this program's power and flexibility.

I can't wait for the final release of 4.0 especially if it finally has support for Little Snitch's windows and sheets

Thanks for such a great product all these years!

MIKEEVANGELIST  I've used Quickeys since version 1 (going on twenty years) and cannot imagine using my Mac without it. It simplifies my life hundreds of times every day. Well worth the price.

And I like supporting a small company that has done great Mac software for so long.

NEO979  I really wish this were more like $40... I'm not saying it's not worth $60, but in today's economic climate, it's just very hard to justify spending that much.

HMURCHISON  That's pretty much an excuse. The economic climate makes it difficult to say purchase a home or a vehicle or anything with revolving payments but Americans are still packing the movie theaters to watch the latest $10 per person movie or the malls to

    buy the latest clothes.

$40-$60 in the overall scheme of things is not going to make or break the avg working citizen.

NEO979  I rarely see movies in the theater, and I curb spending in virtually all areas when possible. I'm trying to understand your point but I cannot follow your logic.

People overall have less money nowadays, so people overall spend less money nowadays. Yes, that's an excuse - a VALID excuse.

I stated from the beginning that I am not challenging the software's value. I just said that I would be more likely to buy it if it were a little less expensive, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are other people who would do the same.

TVALLEAU  Well, I too have used QuicKeys "since day one" and unlike the other posters (below) I have absolutely -NO- problems with it. I consider myself a "power-user" with some fairly intricate and multi-step macros, along with a 60 or so fairly simple ones. The only time I've seen QK "lock up" has been due to a change in the circumstances when running a macro (such as a changed menu, window title or so on) or when I screwed up the macro myself.

I've been running all the latest 4.0 betas without any problems, and have, in fact, removed my other text expanders in order to try out the new option inside QK4.

So, while some folks seem to have trouble with it (and historically, that has always been the case: it's quite powerful software) I personally have no problems at all running it under 10.5.7 on an Intel Mac.

Just wanted to balance things out.
