MACMEND.COM well it looks better and its clear what its supposed to do. BUT why does autoprotect sometimes take 100% of the cpu (according to istat pro) and when it does this the fan on my laptop goes into overdrive, I have been thinking for a while about uninstalling (Version 11.0)

JSTRAIT Updated to 11.0 when renewing subscription and ALL applications including finder have ground to a near STANDSTILL! I turned off auto protect and anything not related to outgoing email and got the same thing. Then I ran the UNINSTALL program in the Symantec folder and everything is running faster than it ever has before. Now I need to find some other APP to protect my hapless PC using clients. Hopefully I can find one that doesn't grind everything to a halt. Sorry I wasted my money on NAV. again... (Version 11.0)

MACUPDATE ADMIN You might find this to be suitable and it is free: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15850/clamxav (Version 11.0)

JSTRAIT Thanks! I'll give that a try. Anything is better than nothing even though my PC friends/colleagues should really all have anti-virus software anyway... (Version 11.0)

JMH1 How about fixing NAV 10. Somewhere between original NAV 10 release and v.10.1.2, the application became more buggy, slow and prone to paralyzing Tiger with auto-protection on. (Version 11.0)

VINCE.NT At least it works and find virii. It is not always the case with VirusBarrier (X.4 or X.5) : I have a folder full of (win/macro) virii : NAV 11 found them all, while VB only found 5 of 21. The GUI is quite simple and very easy to use. So far, I didn't got any stability problem nor slowdown. Sure, it's not as fast as VB to scan a full disk, but really, how often shall we do that ? Scanning the home directory is enough in most cases. (Version 11.0)

VZE26WYC I have had Norton for years and with Tiger it takes hours to scan the drive. I ‘switched’ to VirusBarrier, drive is scanned in minutes! Yes I called Symantec and the man from India wanted to have remote access to my computer-NO WAY. (Version 11.0)

MACUPDATE ADMIN "wanted to have remote access to my computer"... Yeah, just imagine: "Ooops! Sorry!, just deleted your 'home' folder!" (Version 11.0)

KASTORFF I purchased the upgrade online, and when I arrived at the order completion/download page, there was no download button. I tried both Safari and Camino with the same results. I received a confirmation email for the purchase. When I contacted Symantec Customer Support, I was told the order was still in processing, and I would receive a second "confirmation" email with a download link. Anyone else ordered the upgrade online and seen this? (Version 11.0)

JOELWNELSON While the need for Mac antivirus software is minor compared to in the Windows world, I installed NAV 11.0 Universal in order to have one more layer of safeguarding since I receive and pass along many files from Windows PC users, many of which are not tech-savvy. I am not worried about getting viruses on my Mac but appreciate the increased level of PC virus detection in NAV 11. As far as NAV 11 itself... it's Universal, it's much faster than NAV 10, and in a day's testing it doesn't seem to have any performance hit on a 2.16 GHz C2D MacBook. Especially considering Symantec's past history with Mac products, it seems that they've finally put out a decent product with NAV 11. While the need is slim for Mac AV products, NAV 11 seems to be a viable contender. Granted, I've only used it for a day but in that day there has been 6-8 hours of use involving having multiple Adobe CS3 apps running during a scan and performance has not suffered. Only negative is that the interface, while greatly improved, is still not entirely "Mac-like" (i.e. absence of Cocoa toolbars). Minor gripe. Four stars. (Version 11.0)

JMH1 New version is troublesome. I believe the latest version is actually 10.1.2 and this latest update has made NAV even more problematic than previously. Most of the time I have had to disable auto-protection in order to be able to eject disks, disk images and other volumes. The latest version, with auto-protect on, now bogs the system completely when a disk image is mounted, necessitating forced _restart_. NAV will not force quit and force quitting the finder does not help....spinning,spinning beach balls.. (Version 10.1.1)

WADZUNIT We installed this product on G5's running 10.4.6. Then the shared documents (projects) feature of Archicad no longer worked. We uninstalled NAV X and then Archicad started working again. (Version 10.1)

ANONYMOUS Most of these comments are not helpful, if you run a business even it is on PCs you do not want to be sent viruses by Mac using colleagues. If you use Macs then you can lose business from PC using clients who you send a whole load of viruses to even if they don't effect your mac. If you are just an individual mac user then maybe theres no point or you will use the freeware alternative, good for you Maybe the whole virus thing is a con, maybe the poacher and the game keeper are the same thing I dunno. What I do know is waving around the magic "I am on a mac it doesn't effect me" is madness. I have run websites for years offering free advice, all very nice til I was hacked by a 14 year old Brazilian hacker who thought it was funny to be destructive. You never know what might be around the corner. (Version 10.0.2)

I3J I agree that most of the one-star comments were more rants than reviews. I'm a power user and have used Norton products for years -- minus all of the horror stories. I also agree with the poster who reminded us that viruses can be passed along, which is why I ask my friends -- especially my PC using friends -- to refrain from sending any attachments that come from someone I do not know (e.g., the silly joke stuff that people love to send en masse to their 5,000 closest friends). Just because relatively few viruses are written specically for OS X doesn't mean that our machines can't catch these colds. (Version 10.1)

BALLIGERANT Yeah, and here's the best part - I just caught Apple's new TV ad campaign and it had two men standing there, each representing a PC and a Mac. The PC man was sneezing as if he had a cold, saying he caught another virus. The Mac man says, "I'm a Mac so I don't get colds." Granted Apple is trying to use another reason to switch users, but this ad clearly throws the whole 'Macs don't have viruses' in your face. Nothing like teasing the hackers of the world....
