ILGAZ  I posted a positive feedback on another download site: "If you have really rewritten it and it really does scans for web threats too, why not provide a free trial so people who have your bad image in mind may change their minds after testing?"

Sounds simple yes? Believe or not, some official guy, very high official replied and he said it makes sense and they will try to provide a trial. 1-2 YEARS ago.

Yes, Mac security threats are becoming very big deal, the simple trojan stuff already out there. Issue is, do you want to pay $43 to test a product? Every single Antivirus has a trial because of a basic reason: They won't work perfectly on every system out there. It is a technical issue based on the "ring" they run and the low level routines they use.

Even "Intego" who ships equally expensive products with expensive updates has decency to provide free trials for their every single product. If you have a specific threat, for example some "click on everything and run" type of user, I suggest every other product which has some testing ability.

LACWBO  It's incredible that for as long as everyone has known Apple was developing OS X 10.6 that Norton has not updated their virus application to support it.

I would recommend that everyone switch to Virus Barrier X5 which has been updated.

FORMICA  LIVEUPDATE & AUTO-PROTECT NO LONGER WORK IN 10.5.7!!!

Since I updated to Mac OS 10.5.7 on my iMac and my MacBook, the Auto-Protect and LiveUpdate components of Norton Antivirus 11 (NAV) no longer work. LiveUpdate automatically or manually checks for and downloads new virus definition files and updates for all the components of NAV. Auto-Protect automatically scans my system in the background looking for viruses when I am on the Internet, downloading email, or using any kind of external disk. With those two components dead, Norton Antivirus 11 is now COMPLETELY USELESS. And I cannot download a fix because the utility that downloads such things is what needs to be fixed! Nor can I find a fix to download from the Norton or Symantec websites, which are possibly the worst customer support websites in the software industry.

Here are the two alert notifications NAV gave after I tried repeatedly to uninstall and reinstall it:

"Norton AntiVirus Error. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect could not continue. Please run LiveUpdate or reinstall Norton AntiVirus and restart. (Code: 10)"

"System extension cannot be used. The system extension "/Library/Application Support/Symantec/AntiVirus/NortonAutoProtect.bundle/Contents/Resources/SymApComm.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update."

Systems Info: Late 2006 Intel Core2Duo 2.16 GHz 20" iMac with 2 GB RAM, and Late 2008 Intel Core2Duo 2.4 GHz Unibody MacBook with 4 GB RAM, both now running OS 10.5.7.

MACMEND.COM  well it looks better and its clear what its supposed to do. BUT why does autoprotect sometimes take 100% of the cpu (according to istat pro) and when it does this the fan on my laptop goes into overdrive, I have been thinking for a while about uninstalling

JSTRAIT  Updated to 11.0 when renewing subscription and ALL applications including finder have ground to a near STANDSTILL! I turned off auto protect and anything not related to outgoing email and got the same thing.

Then I ran the UNINSTALL program in the Symantec folder and everything is running faster than it ever has before.

Now I need to find some other APP to protect my hapless PC using clients. Hopefully I can find one that doesn't grind everything to a halt.

Sorry I wasted my money on NAV. again...

JSTRAIT  Thanks! I'll give that a try. Anything is better than nothing even though my PC friends/colleagues should really all have anti-virus software anyway...

JMH1  How about fixing NAV 10.

Somewhere between original NAV 10 release and

v.10.1.2, the application became more buggy, slow and prone to paralyzing Tiger with auto-protection on.

VINCE.NT  At least it works and find virii. It is not always the case with VirusBarrier (X.4 or X.5) :

I have a folder full of (win/macro) virii : NAV 11 found them all, while VB only found 5 of 21.

The GUI is quite simple and very easy to use. So far, I didn't got any stability problem nor slowdown.

Sure, it's not as fast as VB to scan a full disk, but really, how often shall we do that ? Scanning the home directory is enough in most cases.

ILGAZ  VB is a real Mac heuristic antivirus, they focus on Mac security threats and they only include "in the wild" Windows virus definitions in their Mac product. That is why they shipped "dual protection" which is basically Mac+Top of the line Windows AV which will run under Windows.

VZE26WYC  I have had Norton for years and with Tiger it takes hours to scan the drive. I ‘switchedÂ’ to VirusBarrier, drive is scanned in minutes! Yes I called Symantec and the man from India wanted to have remote access to my computer-NO WAY.

KASTORFF  I purchased the upgrade online, and when I arrived at the order completion/download page, there was no download button. I tried both Safari and Camino with the same results. I received a confirmation email for the purchase. When I contacted Symantec Customer Support, I was told the order was still in processing, and I would receive a second "confirmation" email with a download link. Anyone else ordered the upgrade online and seen this?

JOELWNELSON  While the need for Mac antivirus software is minor compared to in the Windows world, I installed NAV 11.0 Universal in order to have one more layer of safeguarding since I receive and pass along many files from Windows PC users, many of which are not tech-savvy. I am not worried about getting viruses on my Mac but appreciate the increased level of PC virus detection in NAV 11.

As far as NAV 11 itself...

it's Universal, it's much faster than NAV 10, and in a day's testing it doesn't seem to have any performance hit on a 2.16 GHz C2D MacBook.

Especially considering Symantec's past history with Mac products, it seems that they've finally put out a decent product with NAV 11. While the need is slim for Mac AV products, NAV 11 seems to be a viable contender.

Granted, I've only used it for a day but in that day there has been 6-8 hours of use involving having multiple Adobe CS3 apps running during a scan and performance has not suffered.

Only negative is that the interface, while greatly improved, is still not entirely "Mac-like" (i.e. absence of Cocoa toolbars). Minor gripe.

Four stars.
