JAZZYGUY  Using a G5 and G4 PPC 10.5.8. All I get is some Audio and a bunch of diagonal lines for my full length MPG4s.Everything else plays well including AVIs. This is on both my G4 and G5 running 10.5.8

XANDRA  following regarding v110 for PPC

Like the previous comment, I'm unable to get video -- just garbled diagonal lines when opening Video TS folders (these play using all my other software). I haven't tried DVD).

SPECS on a G5 PPC, 10.5.8 default nVidia graphics card 4GB RAM.

If anyone having similar issues has resolved would appreciate a post here.

NEGRITUDE  ALL versions of VLC for PPC after 1.0.6 have MAJOR bugs. You can either use 1.0.5 from the VLC web site, install 1.0.6 via MacPorts, or compile either of those versions by manually.

NEGRITUDE  And the MU admins should REMOVE the link to 1.1.0-RC for PPC. That's useless now.

NEGRITUDE  Stop whining! I still use a PowerPC machine with 10.5.8, but I also recognize the limitations of what an open source project like VideoLAN can do to accomodate my desires. They don't have the developers to deal with this in any sort of quick fashion, and, in six more point releases, the PowerPC platform will be completely dead (when we hit OS 10.7, it's all over). They have to prioritize, so the PPC plaform will get low priority. Just accept that. I have, and I say that as someone who LOVES his PowerPC. I'm still using a Quicksilver 2002! Can you believe that?! This machine has been a workhorse for eight years! Incredible! Can you imagine a Windows PC from 2002 still in practical use? I don't think so. When 10.7 comes, I'll be hopping on a new Mac Pro and turning the old machine into a Yellow Dog Linux server. Won't you join me?

In the meantime, since I have the package manager MacPorts, I've insalled the last stable release of VLC for PPC, which is 1.0.6. That particular version has a number of critical security fixes which were also rolled into 1.1.x. If you've already got MacPorts, then from the terminal, type "sudo port install vlc". Once built, a copy of VLC 1.0.6 will reside in the /Applications/MacPorts directory.

And if you want to help get a new release of VLC for PPC out, then download the nightly builds and report on anything and everything you discover in the VLC forums. You can grab the nightlies here:

GBBOB  Hey there, first I want to thank you and take back my comments made because of what you said here. I am glad your company is a group of their words even if tis will be that last PPC version for the Mac,

Based on what you wrote, I want to help to help beta as well but I lack knowledge on compiling and I was hoping that you could write me in an email on how to do it for VLC or is there something else I can do to help beta it. The ball was in your court and now it is back i mine. So I want to do what ever I can to get VLC to go Platinum. You can contact me at afcgbbob@aol.com with any directions or things I could do to help. I am extremely happy that you took the high road and decided to complete the project. Again, Thank you Robert Lewis End of Line...

GBBOB  Back in July, you said there would be a PPC version of VLC but that you hit a bug with it. How much longer due you expect to solve the bug issue and finally release the PPC version of VLC? I am really hoping that what ever features from 10.6 were able to be able to be worked into the PPC version. I realize that there are some that just will not work under 10.5.8 but I just hope you can include the ones that do. End of Line...

JCRAIG  VLC 1.0.5 still works on PPC and will continue to work. Just because updates are continuing on the Intel platform doesn't mean that previous PPC binaries suddenly break. It's unrealistic to expect the developers, especially considering the current lack of OSX devs, to continue to support a dead platform (and don't tell me about the number of PPC machines still in use).

GBBOB  Then why on July 31 was the following statement said:

"NEGRITUDE A debug build of VLC 1.1.2 for PPC Macs:

http://jones.videolan.org/~videolan/fpk/ppc-debug/vlc-1.1.2-git-powerpc.dmg

Note that, the reason there hasn't been an official public release of VLC 1.1.x for PPC is because of a nasty video corruption bug that only affects those machines. Be patient. They're working on it."

That is a direct Quote that was said on MacUpDate so I ask again was that statement truthful or total BS. You are the one who put your head on the chopping block by saying that. So you can make as many excuses as you want but you said there would be at least one more upgrade for PPC users so is the VideoLan Team a group of their word or all that was said was flushed down the toilet and just screwed the PPC users with a LIE. There is no way around it you said what you said very clearly and would be very difficult to come up with an excuse that would not make you look bad. The ball is in your court now. Everything is in your hands on how you deal with it and I would avoid lame excuses like the PPC user base. End of Line...

ANONSUPPORT  This should not be a big problem for you, because you always request 64-Bit Intel support, even for applications where it does not make much sense. And btw, the decoding speed of VLC has nothing to do with 64-Bit.

JOHN SAWYER CJS  The MacUpdate description here of VLC needs to be updated to reflect that the version available as a normal download requires an Intel processor. The description currently only states that OS 10.5 and a Quartz Extreme-capable Mac are required. I know there's a link to an older PPC version below the main description and download link, from which users are supposed to infer that the main download isn't a PPC version, but the main description should be specific about what Macs it will run on.

Also, for some reason, the Read Me file that accompanies VLC 1.1.2 is from a 0.9 VLC release, though the prior 1.x releases (at least the 1.0.3 release I have) comes with a later Read Me specifically titled "VLC media player, version 1.0".

MISHA  We normally don't specify Intel or PowerPC under System Requirements (unless it's a particularly steep requirement, like "1.6GHz PowerPC or faster" since there weren't many PowerPC Macs that fast or "Intel 64-bit only").

Instead, we always list that information under "Platform" (right column).

ILGAZ  Could PPC Mac owners help testing git version, with a foundation like Fink for OS X doing the "dependency" heavy lifting?

I know access to PPC macs are not easy so, perhaps a page at VLC like "how to build git version with fink (or macports)" could help.
