DESCRIPTION
TinkerTool is an application that gives you access to additional preference settings Apple has built into Mac OS X. This allows to activate hidden features in the operating system and in some of the applications delivered with the system.
The tool makes sure that preference changes can only affect the current user. You don't need administrative privileges to use the tool. With this design, it is no problem to use TinkerTool in professional networks where users have restricted permissions. The program will never change any component of the operating system, so the integrity of your system is not put at risk, and there will be no negative effect on system updates.
All preference settings changed by TinkerTool can be reset to Apple's defaults, or to the state that existed before using the tool. No dangerous background processes are used for TinkerTool's operation. You may send bug reports here.

VRH Solid, handy, and free. Good stuff. This app has been well maintained and it offers easy access to lots of otherwise hidden features. (Version 3.94)

GRYPHONENT Indeed... glad to see that both Tinker Tool and Tinker Tool System are still in active development. (Version 3.94)

BADABING Once there was a little tool (don't know the name anymore) to active the docks "single-application" mode in Tiger (clicking on an app icon in the dock activates that app and its windows while automatically hiding the windows of all the other apps) is it possible to integrate that in TinkerTool? That's an easy way to prevent window clutter, I've been looking for that feature for a long time but can't remember the apps name. I think it would be a very useful enhancement for TinkerTool. Oh, ...and thank you for TinkerTool. (Version 3.93)

Some time ago I used the "Terminal" to link the iTunes-Arrows to the Library. After starting this app and displaying the iTunes-Section: it reversed my handmade-change (without asking). Now, the arrows are linking to the store again... enough reason for me to trash-it as untrustworthy. Sorry. (Version 3.92)

SHERLOCKBONES If you've updated iTunes any time after making those changes you can blame iTunes for reconnecting to the store. (Version 3.93)

HOTFUSION I believe the reason the option to "disable checksum on dmgs" is grayed out on Mac OS 10.5 systems is because you can now do that through Disk Utility. Launch Disk Utility and go to Preferences under the Disk Utility menu. (Version 3.91)

ROBOGOBO I'm duplicating my review of Tinkertool System here, because this review is developer/support related. After using Tinkertool System for a few months, I did weekly maintenance and ran all the recommended processes religiously. Two weeks ago, after doing the same thing I did before, I experienced constant kernel crashes and freezes immediately following a Tinkertool session. I spent a few days trying to troubleshoot. I'm a moderately experienced user, so I did all the standard stuff- Diskwarrior, fsck, memtest, etc. All found nothing. I do regular backups using CCC, and so I cut my losses, saved my client data and cloned my hard drive from the last backup before Timkertool tinkered too much. That was three days ago, and no more problems. Now, I'm sure Tinkertool is a good program, but the worst part came when I contacted the developer, Marcel Bresnik. He insisted kernel crashes are only caused by hardware problems, and called me a liar when I said my crashlogs were naturally reverted when I cloned from a backup, and would be of no use in troubleshooting. I asked for a refund, but then told him he could keep his $10 if it was too big a deal, to show him I wasn't lying to rip him off, and I would simply give honest feedback on Versiontracker. So there it is. And it's a shame, because it's probably a good program that needs improvement in a few areas, and the developer just happens to be a defensive ass. Oh well, back to Butler. DAVE104 It would be helpful to know, what aspects of your system you changed. (Version 3.91)

TIAGO I'm with KKNOPP on this one... And although we're a bunch of gravediggers here (OP more than 1 year old), after reading your (legitimate) complaint, I had to check the 2 replies to help me figure why you had a -6 rating. As I see it, if the rating system worked as it should, your comment should have a very positive rating, since you're giving real/useful feedback... Instead, what we see is some useless reviews receiving very positive ratings, just for stating that "TinkerTool rocks!" or "Transmission is the best!". This is sad... Anyway, thanks for your post... It was useful to me... There are so many great products out there, that we should all learn to avoid developers with a bad attitude... Regarding the rating system, I don't think there's anything wrong with the way it's implemented... It works as it should... The problem is just that it's too easy for fanboys (and dishonest developers) to glorify or bury the posts that please/annoy them... (Version 3.92)

ROBOGOBO Well thanks guys for coming to my defense. I haven't been back here since I originally wrote the review, and I think the rating system is just another silly thing that every review site has these days. I usually just ignore them. The smiley faces are a bit unclear, though, I just tried to mod you guys up and hit the wrong one, and you can't go back. So maybe you can give each other a star and even it out. Sorry about that. Regarding Tinkertool, I went back to using Cocktail, and it's really just as good. I have no hard feelings toward Mr Bresnik. I just think he's a hardheaded German with a killer app that has a couple problems. He did offer me my money back in the end, but I passed. I hoped that made my point clearer. Anyway the reason it didn't get along with my system is unclear. It was a brand new install on a new Mac Pro, with not even a tick since uninstalling TT. So. (Version 3.92)

ZANGIEF You can use Terminal to set the files' attributes. Use FileWrangler to rename them all to something like "picture-x" (where X is a number) and then use a regular expression in grep, then pipe the output. (Version 3.7a)
