DESCRIPTION
Sawmill is a powerful, hierarchical log analysis tool, well suited for web server access and referrer logs, but can process almost any log. It runs as a CGI program on your web server, and publishes an intuitive graphical user interface which can be used from any web browser to configure and run Sawmill, or to view the statistics pages. The statistics pages are hierarchical, attractive, and heavily crosslinked for easy navigation. Complete documentation is built directly into the program. Sawmill provides an extensive set of features, including a persistent database, fine control over the appearance of stats pages, and versatile log filtering options.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 8.1.1.1:
- Added a plug-in to report on OpenFire IM logs. These are XML logs
and the lines can be extremely long. Testing was done by
introducing newlines between closing and opening packet tags.
- Added new support for AIX CPU Utilization log format.
- Added support for Communigate Pro 5.2 to the Communigate Pro Log
Format plug-in. Improved tracking of multiple recipients.
Eliminated counting a message twice when ACCOUNT/delivered and
DEQUEUER/LOCAL/delivered are both in the log. Added basic support
for DEQUEUER/LIST/relayed. Eliminated underused operation field
and added an action field just for delivery type. Added Queue ID
field.
- Creating a profile with Mirapoint SMTP Log Format gives an error,
'Unknown configuration group "date_time" in node
"profiles..log.fields"'.
- When using Professional trial mode, Save Report To Menu gives an
error, "Checksum does not match for file
'templates/statistics/save_as_new_report/get_report_dat.cfv'.
Your licensing does not permit editing of template files, but it
looks like that file has been edited. Please upgrade to
Enterprise licensing if you need to edit templates, or remove the
edits from that file to continue with your current licensing."
- Updating a database when the database has not yet been build gives
an error, "Can't find tableAlias=main_table,
fieldName=bottomleveldate in table
main_table_join_sessions_join".
- Use of an ODBC log source on a Microsoft SQL Server with a BIGINT
field, results in an error, "Invalid log source Unknown ODBC
type; 5"
- Cross-reference builds done with the internal database, with large
datasets, sometimes give an error like, "Internal: list 99 in
IntegerLists .... ends with -3412465, which is the start of a
range"
- In some circumstances, dates which have data are not clickable in
the Date Picker.
- If a scheduled task is running when a second scheduled task is
scheduled to run, the second task does not start, in some cases.
- A session contains filter, using wildcards, on a page which does not
exist, gives an error, "Internal Error: Empty node name."
- The global_date_filename_regular_expression has no effect in
multiprocessor database builds.
- Fixed a bug which could cause an error on database build or update,
similar to "#### Internal: listitem=338931424, which is larger
than the array cache size (308152)."
- Database builds may crash at the end of log reading, if DNS lookup
is turned on, and parsing servers are being used for
multiprocessor building.
- Numeric comparisons in report filters give incorrect results.
- Running a multiprocessor "split" build (using Sawmill to split data
into multiple per-profile log datasets) can result in an error
"mismatched brackets" in the info.cfg file.
- Removing data from a database without session information gives an
error, "Can't delete file
LogAnalysisInfo/Databases//main/session_table_info.cfg".

DRAXDO This is an awful "app". It's extremly complicated and everything is in HTML... Don't buy this! (Version 8.0.1rc3)

EDIFIED This is pretty neat software that uses an epimodular approach to log analysis. It spits out really nice html that you can view from anywhere. I have it set up on a script so I can update and view my stats in a password protected web directory on the server. It's good at differentiating traffic type to. (Version 7.2.6)

MINOTAUR Sawmill is a highly flexible if sometimes daunting application. It is miles ahead of other packages in terms of the ability to filter, format, and otherwise dig through my Web logs. Two features that I like are: the ability to filter out MY visits to my (remotely hosted) site, as well as identifiable bots; and, the ability to trace visitors paths through the site. I've gleaned valuable information (not sure it is yet profitable) about how visitors traverse my site. To the first point, I was surprised my how much of the traffic that Webalizer and Analog (provided by my Web host) report are, in fact, due to my own visits and the visits of bots. (Version 7.1)

TI No, no, even though webalizer and analog exist, this one is worth every penny. It's quite powerful, and has a clean interface. I love my webalizer, but I would take Sawmill over it, any day of the week. (Version 7.0.1)

ANONYMOUS Who needs this when Webalizer exists? Analog? Don't even think about buying this. (Version 7.0b13)

ANONYMOUS Webalizer and analog generate static reports. This is a database application that can generate new reports and correlate data on the fly. It's much, much more flexible and much more useful if you need an in depth analysis of, for example, who hit which pages. Also, Sawmill can do more than just Web logs. Firewalls, mail servers, virtually anything that produces a text file. (Version 7.0)

RACHAEL This is the most flexible log analysis tool I have found. Using customized filters, the software gives you very fine grained control over the way the information is recorded (into Sawmill's database - it will never change your original log files) and analyzed. While good for beginners (will run well out of the box, auto detecting your log type), it will be most useful to technically minded people who dig into Sawmill's abilities. The best feature is the "paths through the site" which shows the paths that your visitors traveled in a logical tree configuration. The creators of Sawmill seem committed to both quality and usability. Updates are released often, and they will pay you (by reducing the cost of the software) to evaluate the software and report any bugs. (Version 6.4)
