STAR-AFFINITY   Seems like a great browser overall, but please do something about the icons.

I think they look quite bad and it feels like they were made in a rush.

Not good enough for a Mac app.

Maybe it's a job for the Iconfactory? :)

NOSFERATU  Good work, fantastic browser

-

One strange problem here:

If I login at ebay and do a advanced search for recently finished articles to compare prices, type in the product I am looking for and then push the search button, it turns to the login window again and again in an endless circle.

This only happens when I search for the finished auctions, not if I use the normal search option.

The same with webkit nightly build, and sometimes with Safari, maybe a webkit problem? Or is it eBay?

I have to use Camino for this special task now.

Could this be fixed, please?

My Mac: PowerMac G4 800 Mhz, 1 GB, 10.4.11

Besides that really a great browser, a well thought-out app/work, and very very fast.

Would be a bit better with lighter grey buttons, some with more contrast, - is there an alternative button set besides the yellow and the dark grey?

I've searched for other buttons on google but found none so far. Any tips?

After all iCab is my favourite browser now. Again thanks for your excellent work Mr. Clauss.

STEVEN GOODHEART  Damn, this baby is fast! I mean noticeably faster than Safari 3.12, faster than Firefox 3, faster than Opera 9.5.2, faster than OmniWeb 5.8 sneaky peak -- plus, it's Webkit, so I can use the Services menu with Devonthink Pro, MacJournal, and every other Service friendly app I use every day. Only the fact that I use add-ons Saft and SafariStand with Safari makes Safari a slightly more useful browser for me.

iCab is also hugely customizable, and has lots of neat features, for example: iCab sends e-mail and emails pages, can speak the text on most web pages, has a very nifty Session manager built in, and has a lot of damn cool contextual menu items: back/forward/show source, download, check syntax, open in new window/tab, add url to bookmarks, open image externally, as well as some great submenus such as show all links. These are only a few of the cool features.

Some years ago, I paid for OmniWeb, and I've always been glad I did, as it's given me good service over the years as an alternative to Safari and Firefox. But I have to say I'm seriously thinking of sending my bucks to iCab to thank them for making such a great, FAST browser (even though the free version use is totally unobtrusive). It's that good.

WHICH BUTTON IS THE ANY KEY?  This is like driving an AMG in a german speedway, you can't hardly go any faster and you get all the extras. Not to mention this is a "one man - one browser" (pun intended) thing, I take my hat off to the developer.

SPOTTHEHALL  Been with iCab a long time - and since going to webkit it has become my default.

Alexander Clauss is quick to respond and has delivered on many fronts - particularly I thank him for the geo-detection and continued work in that direction through the Experimental Settings.

It takes running on webkit nightlies well now - stable as a rock with that 100/100 Acid3 feeling and a blistering Sunspider score. All round a brilliant bit of work - even if I did make my own icon set - sorry Alexander, I couldn't deal with the default set full-time ;)

NUMAN789  I tried this version and cannot access certain sites and others it returns an error message. It also does not remember passwords on some sites.

I don't like paying to be a beta tester to get rid of the floating message, when I have other browsers (Opera, Safari, Firefox) that have better functionality and are free?

WASTED MY TIME  Tested iCab for a week now and I must say, it's the best browser on Mac, fast and highly costumizable, wonderfull app.

But:

my memory is completely eaten after 1 or 2 hours of use, I habe to quit and restart iCab then.

I think that's only on sites with javascript, it would be great if iCab could free up the (javascript use of...) memory from time to time.

And if you generally turn off javascript in the preferences, but want to active javascript for some sites, the way to the filter manager is a very long and time consuming way, a button in the status line for that would be much easier.

But overall iCab is a fantastic browser.

ALEXC  If there is a memory leak related to JavaScript, then this is not in iCab, it must be in Apple's WebKit, which is the rendering engine that iCab uses. You should send a bug report to Apple because of this. In case you're not yet using the latest version of Mac OS X you may consider updating your system. A newer Mac OS X release which includes a newer WebKit release might already fix the memory issue.

WASTED MY TIME  > "it's not iCab, it's webkit"

Hello Mr. Clauss,

Thank you for your reply.

As I've recognized the same with Safari some time ago, I've written to Apple about it, - they told me that there is no memory waste.

(So Apples own app Activity Monitor must be very stupid...)

Javascripts can take as much memory/resources as they want, like standalone miniapps, so if I open 20 or 30 sites one after one in a web session, after some time the memory can be full. I can't quit Javascripts that I don't need anymore, like I can quit normal apps. They only quit when _the scripts_ want.

They called that normal..., but I want to quit anything what and when I want, it's _my_ Mac.

Javsscripts can block the usage of the menuebar, block the context menue, the usage of buttons, they can block my ability to close their windows, they can open 20 windows if I click on only one link and many more. They "have the right" to use time events so that I can close adversing windows they opened only after 30 seconds and thelike.

I know I can restrict a few of the Javscript "rights" in iCabs preferences, but not all and some websites can trick that out.

I don't think unkown people from anywhere should have the right to takeover my browser, I think that _I_ have the right to block all that or quit it at every time I want to, again: it is _my_ computer.

And I thought there would be a way to kill the Javascript usage of ressources at least when I've closed that windows, but Javascripts seem to have many rights and a high dominance on a Computer (once started, nearly can do and use what they want in my browser/memory).

And yes, Apple told me to use Leopard (of course they told me that...).

But I have to stay with Tiger for a while (compatibility of some apps)

I tested this with the latest version of Safari (3.1.1), as I remember it installs a brandnew version of Webkit on my Tiger, but is was the same, my memory was completely filled after opening a few websites with intensive Javascript usage. I have 1 Gb of memory...

After all, I think the webdesigner/programmers have rights on my Mac that they shouldn't have, it's my Mac and I like to have the controll over it.

If I can't quit the usage of resources of Javascripts when I don't need them anymore (sites closed) while I'm surfing the web, it seems very obscure to me. And I don't want to restart my Mac to get rid of all the Javascript garbage. That's to much like it was on OS 9.

I don't like that unkown people from anywhere can do such things on my Mac while I'm surfing. Maybe the whole Javascript thing is a potential security hole, maybe only I think of that as unsecure.

I don't know, I wish iCab whould have something like a "Terminator" for Javascripts that are unwanted or not needed anymore. I would like to have the option to quit anything at every time on my Mac. But Javascript seems to be the uncontrolled exception.

In my eyes something like "Terminate Scripts and free up" buttons in the Statusbar whould be a great enhancement to your great browser.

KOWALSKI1  I've been using iCab since Classic Days and it never let me down. In many ways it is still the best. Nothing is as fast as iCab. It is stable and its ad block features are first class. It however lacks the expandability of Firefox. Tried it some months back and I find it hard to live without one add-on in particular. Morning Coffee is the deal breaker for me. Add a similar feature to iCab and it will be impossible to fault!

ZEROZEROZERO  Been using iCab since it was a puppy and now at 4.01 it's still the best utility browser: FAST, full of features, stable, and did I mention fast?

I really appreciate the error report, the best favorites toolbar, and all the tools: filter manager, cookie manager, forms manager, offline mode, download manager... live update of offline files (for coding websites) autosave session... yada, yada, yada. And it rips webpages to five different formats.

Yes, there are some issues, but the tweaks and fixes come constantly. Best thing about it IMHO: it is not free (unless you forego a few minor features) - by that I mean it doesn't come with any strings attached.

Great browser, great developer support, best money I've spent on software.

HELIOS9  Well, even in this version (4.0.1) I still can't get iCab's log-in info saving feature to work....sigh..

Still have to enter the info manually at each password protected web page every time, which gets to be a real pain in the ass awfully fast.

Is there any iCab user out there who CAN successfully use that feature???

The developer seems totally resistant to making any changes to simplify the process, or even making it workable.

Oh well, I, for one, just won't use iCab as a first line browser....let alone pay the $25 for it, even though iCab is a really first rate browser otherwise.

LUX  No, I can't get it to work either. Otherwise I really like iCab and would use it as my default browser if it would save log-in info / passwords.

HELIOS9  iCab has become a first rate browser with 4.0. It's fast and smooth, a pleasure to use overall.

However, there's one BIG issue that needs to be resolved before I can give it a full five star rating, and that's the matter of password/log-on info saving.

As has been mentioned by other reviewers here, the rather arcane method that the developer has chosen to use just doesn't work, and God knows, I've tried.

I just can't get iCab to save log-in info, period, and I spent a good hour trying everything.

Developer, PLEASE make password saving work, and work easily and effortlessly as it is with all other browsers.
