BONGO_X  I love it. Safari is OK, I like Camino and it was my default browser for a long time. No browser I tried was exactly what I wanted so I went searching and tried icab, which I hadn't used since OS9. It has everything I want, every feature, and is totally customizable. The only issue is that some of the features are not obvious and are easy to miss. Everything I thought was a shortcoming was soon proven not to be with an email to the developer.

So I gave him my $25. Well worth it.

HALEAKALARI  icab is so flipping intense it rips my face off, wears it and [intentionally] does a face-plant all over the interwebs. but seriously, this has become my go-to browser for research work and general light browsing. if only it could access login information in keychain, like camino and safari do, it would be my main browser. until then, it tops safari for me and comes in a close second to camino.

the developer is also quite responsive to bug reports/feature requests. i hope a.c. never stops development on icab. aside from it's odd approach to saving login information, this is the most feature complete [solely mac] browser that i have ever used.

plus, icab actually has the ability to create standalone web-applications (or single-site browsers, whichever you prefer), like fluid, from one or a whole set of user specified addresses. furthermore, these web apps' are able to use standard icab filters, settings and scripts. plus, like safari and all webkit applications, they are compatible with greasekit. beat that!

p.s. it also plays quite nicely the version of webkit that the safari 4 beta uses.

NOSFERATU  Good work, fantastic browser

-

One strange problem here:

If I login at ebay and do a advanced search for recently finished articles to compare prices, type in the product I am looking for and then push the search button, it turns to the login window again and again in an endless circle.

This only happens when I search for the finished auctions, not if I use the normal search option.

The same with webkit nightly build, and sometimes with Safari, maybe a webkit problem? Or is it eBay?

I have to use Camino for this special task now.

Could this be fixed, please?

My Mac: PowerMac G4 800 Mhz, 1 GB, 10.4.11

Besides that really a great browser, a well thought-out app/work, and very very fast.

Would be a bit better with lighter grey buttons, some with more contrast, - is there an alternative button set besides the yellow and the dark grey?

I've searched for other buttons on google but found none so far. Any tips?

After all iCab is my favourite browser now. Again thanks for your excellent work Mr. Clauss.

MACINTOSH SAUCE  After trying this new version of iCab out for a few hours earlier, I decided to buy it to support the developer. There are some really nice features in this browser that other ones do not have or have them but they are limited.

The one thing I really like is the preferences - it's very customisable. It has not crashed at all and appears to be quite stable on my Mac Pro. Also, it seems to be as fast as Safari and OmniWeb (which I also purchased to support the developer).

I mentioned to my wife that a new version of iCab was released and she instantly remembered using iCab back in the Mac OS Classic days. We used to use it a lot until Safari came out. Since Safari needs some serious work, we are now going to use the new version of iCab.

Safari lacks two things which makes me so mad sometimes: no text under toolbar buttons and no add/delete tab buttons in the toolbar. I like text under my toolbar buttons, when I am looking up at the toolbar I like to see text. Safari doesn't support this. I also like the add/delete tab buttons in the toolbar. Another thing that Safari lacks. I don't understand why Apple doesn't give people the choice of having text under their toolbar buttons or not. I am sure it is not difficult to program for this feature.

iCab X (Pro) 4.0 is quite a nice program IMO. Congratulations to the developer for updating this browser.

MACINTOSH SAUCE  Wow! iCab 4 is running quite nicely on my Mac Pro. I am going to use it for a week and see if I like the new version enough to warrant purchasing it. There are some features of iCab that I do like. :)

STROB  I would have purchased iCab except Silverlight crashes it. Normally responsive developer says it is a problem with the plug-in. But this is not logical since this behavior can not be replicated in any other browser I have. Please fix this as I am confident you could.

THEBRIX2008  The two big iCab winners for me are, first, the degree of control over what is, or is not displayed - just about anything (plugin content, images, scripts, iframes, cookies) from third-party servers can be filtered out, either globally or per-site. Secondly, the tab control is excellent; in a nutshell, a new page triggered by any action (user, same site, different site, external program) may be opened in any of a new window, a new foreground tab or a new background tab, and those options are again entirely controllable.

I also note that one of the major stumbling blocks with programs produced by individual developers - poor imports - is no issue here; I was asked to import from OmniWeb, Opera or Safari on first run!

Also, the advertising filter is surprisingly good - I switched Privoxy off and the iCab filter on and was seeing very little that shouldn't have been displayed.

The only real weaknesses I see are the rather murky graphical design - sharper icons and tabs are a must - and the very conservative form-filling. It has been deliberately designed not to automatically fill and submit everything in sight, although I feel that the author has gone a bit too far the opposite way in demanding authorisation for every action. (Trick - changing the default "Strict" field parsing to "Less strict" saves a bundle of trouble).

I can't comment on the price as I bought iCab as a MacUpdate promo (and with a significantly more favourable exchange rate than now :) but, caveats aside, it is a great browser and a remarkable effort by one developer. 1Password compatibility would round things off!

CORPSECORPS  The problem with it's content blocking/filtering is that it's overly cryptic.

Adblock Plus & Adblock Element Hiding Filter, though they recently got a big dose of cryptic but powerful, are still so much easier, which keeps me using Firefox.

STEVEN GOODHEART  Damn, this baby is fast! I mean noticeably faster than Safari 3.12, faster than Firefox 3, faster than Opera 9.5.2, faster than OmniWeb 5.8 sneaky peak -- plus, it's Webkit, so I can use the Services menu with Devonthink Pro, MacJournal, and every other Service friendly app I use every day. Only the fact that I use add-ons Saft and SafariStand with Safari makes Safari a slightly more useful browser for me.

iCab is also hugely customizable, and has lots of neat features, for example: iCab sends e-mail and emails pages, can speak the text on most web pages, has a very nifty Session manager built in, and has a lot of damn cool contextual menu items: back/forward/show source, download, check syntax, open in new window/tab, add url to bookmarks, open image externally, as well as some great submenus such as show all links. These are only a few of the cool features.

Some years ago, I paid for OmniWeb, and I've always been glad I did, as it's given me good service over the years as an alternative to Safari and Firefox. But I have to say I'm seriously thinking of sending my bucks to iCab to thank them for making such a great, FAST browser (even though the free version use is totally unobtrusive). It's that good.

ISTRA  what a great browser!

Many things work different than all the rest (who seem to be all the same), and some little functionality stuff could be "improved" = expanded, but iCab is a browser to fall in love with!

Congratulations mr. developer :-)
