RICHARD V  Regarding 2004.4 and 10.4.8 on Intel:

BE CERTAIN you run the "Precision Patch" or you will have serious rounding errors.

ALSO note that 4D's patch logic is flawed and there is at least one case where the patch will not install properly-leaving you thinking it installed.

Finally, note that apparently 4D will not have a universal binary for approx. a year.

MERE MORTAL  4D 2004 rocks. You can have a true client/server database up and running in a day. And with a little more effort, you can give it exactly the interface you want. Even a web interface.

The database engine is rock-solid. You're not going to lose any data here. It also includes great automated backup features and a separate repair utility that can usually resurrect your data if it gets clobbered by system or hardware glitches.

Check out www.Mere-Mortal-Software.com for an example of a shareware product I created with 4D 2003.

ANONYMOUS  4D 2004 is a good product ... but with now only 200 project méthods in standard edition (299 Euro), the good name should be "4D Test Edition" and not "4D standard Edition" !!!

BRENDAN  4D is an awesome product.

The company that creates/distributes it is not.

The upgrade costs are very high.

4D advertises this product as an 'internet' database, however, you have to pay an additional $899 in order to use the product on the internet. Try finding that info easily at the 4D web site.

BASTIBENSE  On the first view this database has only pro points. But on the other hands are the upgrade licences. If you have, for instance, 15 users using a 4D server and you HAVE TO upgrade to a new version because 4D stops working on the previous version, and does not support Mac OS X, you have to pay like $9.000-$12.000 to JUST UPGRADE the server - probably without getting any more features you could use.

MERE MORTAL  You don't "have to" upgrade anything if you don't want to. 4D doesn't stop working when a new version is released. And 4D fully supports and sells two versions worth of product (for example now they're supporting both v2003 and 2004). 4D 2003 will continue to be supported until 4D 2007 (the next major upgrade) is released, which gives that version a full 4 years of support. Not bad in a fast-paced software environment.

DGUS  The $9k-$12k upgrade cost is too high.

I just checked current pricing for a full buy.

4D server std edition - $1000

Web Server add-in - $ 600

15 clients - $4400

Total cost $6000

The upgrade prices are about half of the above.

STEVE WILLIAMS  4D is the best mid-range database on the market. It's unbelievable. If you're the IT Manager of an SME business, this is the database to use.

CRAIG  4D is a fantastic product. If you can imagine it, you can most likely do it with 4D. It is fast to develop with, and has an extrememly helpful developer community.

BASTIBENSE  We are using it for our company database. Now we are most probably going to port that database to a combination of PHP/mySQL and SOAP, using Client applications which automatically update themselfes.

The weak points of 4D are: 1) no object orientation, 2) *badly* structured window management, 3) bad recovery tool (often corrupts data), 4) *extreme* costs when buying or updating - 12 clients around 10.000 euros on every update.

Yeah, it makes running executables for Mac OS 9, X and Win32, but who really wants such a bad structured application running an old database engine and a very very bad GUI engine? Me not anymore.
