PEDAMADO  As sad as it is Apple doesn't address this error on their website...

Microsoft already addressed this problem here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842646/en-us?spid=2490&sid=global

This (as I verified) is a MacOS error. For me it happened after a system shutdown causing Office and Adobe apps to stop working.

The answer was as simple as using the Disk Utility to Repair the disk permissions...

    All working now ;)

CHATSWORTHBOB  I have an iMac (G3, 2Gig) and I want to install an external drive to transfer all of the data as a back up.

I purchased an Iomega external drive and in the process of installing it the message "Can't find Carbonlib" appeared

Where do I get access to a "carbonlib" file/program for this computer configuration?

DI  It does depend on what OS you are running. I'm running 9.1 so I'm downloading via the link on this page. (I tried to search the Apple site for the link I needed but, as per usual, couldn't find anything and googling brought me here which sent me back to the right spot on the Apple site. Bit funny that you have to go outside Apple to get a decent link to resources inside Apple!)

Anyways... a 2gig iMac sounds oldish so I'm assuming that you are not running System X. If that is the case then CarbonLib 1.6, accessible via the link on this page, should do the trick. It's for System 8.6-9.x. Download it, unstuff it and drag the icon into your extensions file. (Backup any CarbonLib that is already there just in case you have to go back to the old version for any reason.) Hope this helps.

BAMSE  It seems the version 1.6.1 of CarbonLib is installed automatically as part of the Classic environment. It happened to me at some point after I in Mac OS X system preferences chose which system folder (previously untouched by Classic) would be used in Classic mode. It also left a installation log file which (I think) mentioned this update had been made.

ANONYMOUS  Followed the "more info" link to Apple's website. It's a page for CarbonLib 1.6.

Ran a search on there for CarbonLib 1.6.1 and got zero results for 1.6.1 and one result for 1.6. It looks to me like CarbonLib 1.6.1 does not exist, or at least it is not available on the Apple site.

LAUREN GRONDONA  I am unable to launch my microsoft word, excell, entourage etc, because there is a shared library error box that pops up and does not allow me to launch based on CarbonLib.

I asked apple support to help me twice on two separate calls and they said they could not because it was a microsoft issue not Apple.

I am soooo angry that I wasted so much phone time to be sent back to Apple by Microsoft showing me that if I googled the problem, I would see that it was a Operating System Apple issue not Microsoft problem.

Time is so valuable and I have been trying to correct this problem for over two hours and I am still on hold waiting for a product manager at Apple support to help me. Very dissapointed customer.

ANONYMOUS  Thank you for your comment. I, too, have had the same problem with Apple. Their level of Customer Support has really dropped in the past two years as they have tried to boost profits. They're just like that other big software company now: Just deny problems exist or call it "normal operating behavior;" even takes the threat of a lawsuit before they fix anything major. I'm going to move to Linux in a year or so.

MARKMACKAY  I'm trying to install software for an Epson scanner. CarbonLib 1.6 came as part of the installation disk. When I'm asked to install it my computer freezes solid. I can't skip it so I can't complete the installation. I'm using OS 9.2. Any suggestions? Any place where I can find more about CarbonLib funtionality?

    Thanks

NATCH  Use TomeViewer (an Apple utility) to extract CarbonLib from the installer and then manually install the CarbonLib file (it is an extension) via drag 'n drop to your Extensions folder. Simple.
