MACTECH  This software is great for keeping all of your documents together in one place. I really like how you can search and find only items from documents, not from everything like you get in spotlight. I also like how easy it is to back up all of your files, because they live in a single file. Overall a great product. I have heard that the next version is going to have a lot of new features.

ICYBLAZE2009@GMAIL.COM  Regarding update 1.0.74,

In this version, the biggest upgrade is fixed the update issue for info panel, which now all the information is updated instantly after the changes.

Also, regarding the issue of choosing open program in iDocument, we've passed this issue to our product manager, and we'll add this feature in iDocument in the close upgrade, please be patient with us.

Thanks in advance;

Mike

FRENKIEBOY  I was looking at iDocument for some time, and decided to buy it when it came up as a Macupdate promo. I wanted to get rid of the folders I kept all of my documents in.

When adding folders iDocument keeps the folder structure intact. Dragging does the trick, without any pain. But then I stumbled on some of the (hidden) limitations of the program. On their website I can clearly see issues of Macworld in iDocument. Dragging the zno files to iDocument has no result at all. iDocument can't import them. But how do they do it at Icyblaze ?? I asked Icyblaze support, but the answer I got didn't solve the problem. So my macworlds stay where they are...

Then I tried to open an xls file in excel 2004. I have both office 2004 and 2008 installed. But since this file contains macro's, I want it to open in Excel 2004. Whatever I try, the file refuses to open in excel 2004. Emailing with the icyblaze support didn't solve the problem.

So be aware. If you have for instance pdf files, like me, you will most likely view them in preview. But if you want to edit a file, you can't get it to open with a pdf editor, like acrobat pro.

Conclusion : If you can live with the limitations the program has, you'll probably like iDocument. It has many goodies you'll use in daily life.

ICYBLAZE2009@GMAIL.COM  Dear iDocument users,

Thanks a lot for your comments, and here are some tips or answers for the questions you asked before. iDocument is preparing a upgrade in both function and UE in this summer:

1. We'll certainly support picture formats documents in our close upgrades;

2. We'll reorganize the .library folder, and all documents in the 'other' folder will be re-organized. And of course, the exported structure as well;

3. In addition, we'll release the iPhone version for iDocument users as soon as we can.

Thanks in advance.

SHMK  This isn't an in depth review but I wanted to make a few comments. There are many things I like about this application: the UI is nice and clean and it is really easy to use but there is one thing that I really don't like, the way the files are organized within the .ibillibrary, it is just a freaking mess. If you import a files and then start to move them around and organize them creating new folders, (by folder i mean folder created in the idocument side bar thingy), collections etc. it leaves a massive mess of empty folders, untitled folders all over the place within the .ibillibrary, the naming structure within the database blows too if you import a ton of pdfs or whatever on the same day you get a massive pile of folders with all the same date with number extensions (ie 2010_06_12_14). All my pdf aren't stored within the data folder either there is another one there called "other" that for some reason has only a couple of pdfs in it and I did nothing as far as I can tell to set it apart from the rest of my data.

You might be wondering why do you even care about structure within the package contents of the .ibillibrary file? Well maybe I shouldn't but say I would like to migrate to another application or move my data to another operating system I would have to start from scratch with my organization. Also maybe I am a bit ocd but it bugs me to think that there are all those empty and untitled folders just sitting in the .ibillibrary building up making a bigger and bigger mess.

I can export folders but if I export a collection it just chucks everything into one big folder losing all the formatting I have created. This is lame. Do I have to export folder and collection separately? Any chance some of these issues might be addresses in further updates?

JAMES H.  I am a Yep2 user, but seeking for a better alternative to organise my document files. I stumbled across iDocument and it looks really promising. I agree with most of the previous reviewers. Without further ado, here are the feedback so far:

Pro:

- UI: Clean interface, easy-to-use. Definitely heading towards the right direction. The interface is friendlier and gives a better user experience overall than Yep2

- Since all the documents are stored in one Package file, it is much easier to backup or move to a different computer

- Encryption is nice

- Importing, Tagging, work well

However, like other applications, it does have its shortcomings:

- Does not prompt to delete original once the files are imported successfully

- Cannot select what info to show in any view (Icon, Group, or List)

- Cannot tell the file type in Icon view, maybe a small file type icon would help

- Being a Yep2 user, having the ability to "Scan+Tag+Organise" is a HUGE time saver

- File Sharing still feels a bit flaky

- More mouse-over tooltip would be helpful

- It would be cool to detect and migrate Yep2 tags during import

iDocument shows the potential to be THE document manager, especially when IcyBlaze improves a few areas. Scanner support would be much appreciated, although I don't mind using Image Capture.

All in all, it is a well put-together application, and I am glad there is another option to help manage all my documents. I don't really miss Yep2 that much at all :)

DR. GIRLFRIEND  GUI: Elegant, understated.

Layout makes for a pleasant experience. Yep’s GUI, over the years, has grown a bit too busy for my tastes with certain options --like tagging -- duplicated too many times throughout the interface. I prefer iDoc’s clean, streamlined interface.

iDoc’s search bar should be on top though; at present, it’s on the bottom, which looks neater, but it’s non-standard and interrupts flow when you’re batch sorting. Colors, fonts, etc are pleasing, but the small grey text on top on the dark blue background might be hard to read for users that prefer more contrast. Also, when an item is selected, a thin, pale grey box is barely visible around the document’s icon; it’s too subtle. Should be a more contrast-y color or a bigger box.

Features: Good. Could use improvement though. Needs navigation window so when you select (or better yet hover) over a doc it tells you where it is located. This is critical for people with multiple harddrives or those managing docs over a network.

Needs options for dealing with duplicate items in different locations. Has a “copy to desktop” option but a “move to” would be helpful as well.

Doesn’t allow you to rename a doc while in use.

The sharing features sound awesome, unfortunately some options are buggy or don’t work at all: “Send File” opens a window to “select person”. The window is blank, no instructions are shown in how to populate the list. No add button, no blank box to type in a name or email address. iDoc should, at the very least, allow choices from address book.

“Share docs” shares the entire Library on the user’s first click. (Whoops! Sorry about that pr0n, Grandma; it wasn’t mine, I swear!) Also, there isn’t any visual feedback as to whom you’re sharing your docs with… I’m assuming they’re shared with everyone over your network. This needs immediate clarification and a navigation window which allows sharing of select items to select people.

I like the way the tag window stays closed unless you summon it, but it needs a quick way to close it again when tagging is done.

I really like the way it separates items in groups, with a simple arrow on the left menu, allowing you to collapse or expand different file type groups, like pdfs, docs, etc. I prefer this method over Yep’s top menu sorting because you can have open as many (or as few) groups as you like. This is great for organizing multiple copies of a file you might have in different formats.

Don’t like: The largest thumbnail size makes the doc icons bigger, but the text inside isn’t legible because the size of the text doesn’t increase as well. Yep wins on this one because when you increase the icon size in Yep, the text size also gets bigger, which allows for efficient sorting since you don’t have to open the doc to view its contents.

Could not get the manual “Import” to work; neither navigating to a document, nor dragging and dropping into the app. I guess once iDocument scans your harddrive, that’s it, so make sure you have every folder you want imported selected on first run.

Says it can read .chm files; didn’t work for me.

Erratic memory handling. Sometimes just a bit higher than Yep, other times (especially when searching) it can shoot up to 300MB of Real and 300MB of virtual RAM on my MacPro. When idle, it’s at least twice as RAM hungry as Yep. That’s not good.

Despite its flaws, iDocument looks like it has real potential. I’ll definitely be watching to see if it improves.

MACGRUDER  Very promising - the Smart search is poorly implement though.

No search by 'within last month' for example.

Or by document content - which is a real surprise.

Or by extension etc.

No sub searches like you can do in Spotlight with command - F.
