DESCRIPTION
Notify is a new Gmail notifier for OS X which supports multiple accounts. Each account has individual notification options, and you can easily check what's in each account via the tabbed interface.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.0.5:
  • Fixed a bug where the main UI would sometimes freeze when checking for new messages, rendering Notify unusable.
  • Fixed a bug where if you added a display name, then removed it, the email username would not be properly displayed in the tab bar unless you removed the account and re-added it.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

O5220803  Nice interface; works well under OSX 10.6. Suggestion: I would like to see the developer include "Delete" and "Reset Mail Counter" buttons in the next release. Notify is a well designed OSX application.

ANDREWM8  Just installed and tested Notify 1.0.5 - seems there are some problems:

- added 3 accounts with no problem

- Notify in the menubar shows unread count as 3 - in reality I have on 2 accounts 1 each unread message and on 1 account 5 unread messages, to the total of 7. Where the count 3 comes from?

- no matter which account's tab I click on the Notify only shows subject and snip for the first account on the list - ?????

KYLEVE  Hi

These are known issues that seem to effect an extremely small amount of users - we will be fixing these in our 2.0 release.

VIOLET  This is exactly what I've been needing.

Google Notifier only checks for new messages every 15-30 minutes, whenever it seems to feel like it, without an option in preferences to set how often you'd like it to check. Gmail Notifr had that option, but made itself pretty much useless by not showing you who sent your emails or the subjects of them.

Notify has the best of all worlds - you can set it to check for new messages at lots of different intervals; you can see the sender, the subject, and even the first couple of lines of the email itself so you can decide if it's worth opening Gmail right then to check it; and I think the tabbed window interface is pretty darn clever. And I'm sure it's handy for lots of people that it can check up to four Gmail accounts, though that's not something I use myself.

Notify, for me, is perfect as-is and just what I've been looking for. If they keep adding to it, great!

SJSW  Gmail Notifr absolutely does tell you the sender of the email as well as the subject so your assertion that it does not is incorrect. In my opinion to call a program that was the only viable free alternative to Google's official notifier for over a year "worthless" and then give misleading information about it is irresponsible. If I sound "harsh" let's just say that I appreciate developers like James Chan who give their time and talent to the Mac community (with free programs) and that includes this developer as well, I think this could be a fine program as it matures and I really like the U.I.. Right now though it can't check Google Apps accounts (of which I have many) and I need to be able to check more than 4 accounts. That means, for now, that it won't work for me but it doesn't mean that I think it's "worthless". For many users this may be all that they need and I do appreciate the developers efforts and wish him well.

VIOLET  The only place I've ever seen Notifr tell you is in the growl notification once the email arrives. If you're not at the computer or you don't see it, you can't click on the menu icon and bring that up in the menu - unless you all are using a different version of Notifr than I am. :) For me, that makes it useless. Just my own opinion.

SJSW  I think that what must be going on here is that you are somehow confusing Gmail Notifr by James Chan with another program. Gmail Notifr has supported showing the sender and subject (from the menubar item pull down) since version 0.2.2 (Nov 3, 2008). That was 16 updates and almost 1 year ago. I find it revealing that someone commenting on a "Mac Update" site would not be "up-to-date" on software they purportedly use. Perhaps when you do your next review you should focus on the positives (or negatives) of the program you're reviewing instead of making comments about another program that, in this case, reveals your ignorance. When you make assertions that have no basis in fact, your have no credibility in this forum.

VIOLET  It's Gmail Notifr, and it's up to date. I haven't personally attacked you, so you can stop personally attacking me.

SJSW  There is nothing personal about my comments and pointing out that you are mistaken is not an attack. You made a misleading (and flat out wrong) assertion that I have refuted with facts. If you're using a current version of Gmail Notifr then you know that it most certainly DOES tell you the sender and subject from the pull down menubar item yet you refuse to acknowledge that you are wrong. I wouldn't care save the fact that someone reading your review unchallenged might not try Gmail Notifr based on your erroneous evaluation of a major feature. At any rate, I'll leave it to others to draw their own conclusions about the value of your opinion in this forum.

STEPHAN213  I loved Notify when using Leopard, but I just tried installing it on Snow Leopard, and can't open the account configuration screen, let alone the preference menu. The app just doesn't open it.

Any ideas?

KYLEVE  Hi - try deleting your preference file - it's here:

/Users//Library/Preferences/com.Vibealicious.Notify.plist

All of our developers are on Snow Leopard and can't replicate your problem, so wiping the preferences might fix it.

RADIORHAEEM  Great gmail notifer application, but it appears to have an issue after running for a while in OS X 10.6. The pop-up dialog flashes and then refuses to open again. Only option is to kill the app with activity monitor.

Seems to be related to telling Notify to launch the full gmail interface in a browser.

CINDI168  This app is everything I wanted in a gmail notifier. This completely blows google notifier out of the water. I love how it supports multiple accounts, growl notification and is very easy to use. The UI is also quite nice. I haven't ran into any stability issues and it doesn't use up system resources. Can't wait for more features to be implemented (such as in app replies). I also wish the app could keep the read messages instead of deleting it after it was read. Would be nice if I could set up a notification sound too. All in all, great app!

MAX LEE  Perfect! A simple and functional menu app that let you check all your GMail accounts. Great for me when Mail is blocked by my office firewall.

Could I ask for anymore? Not really. Perhaps the ability to change the highlight color. But that's a very minor nit.

Great! Thanks!

TESLANAUT  Sorry for commenting again, but semi-related, this is also how I want a Twitter client to be. In the menubar, unobtrusive, only showing itself when needed. Exactly like how Notify looks. Here's to hoping a developer can fill my wishes.
