FORMICA  What is the difference between FilmRedux and ReduxEncoder? They appear to be made by the same developer, and both are "Based on Techspansion VisulaHub." What gives?

STEFAN-EASELNET  FilmRedux - the version on this page of macupdate was compiled by Ben King - AKA Mad Hatter Software from the source code release by tyler of transcoderredux, although i believe Ben has now given up on the project.

ReduxEncoder is built upon the transcoderredux code by another dev aka st373n and is a bit further along in its development.

TYLERF  If seems that there is some convergence in the listings as there are more than 1 version of FilmRedux floating around on the net, The official Transcoder-Redux.com version, tylers open code on sourceforge, st373n version and bens version.

Reading some of the comments here seem that some peeps are using one and some are using another.

to clarify - - the st373n version does the following,

Converts to All Apple formats and AVI, and inputs most formats.

The output filetype for the Apple Formats is set to m4v to give double click opening in itunes.

Has NO video preview window.

Has working saving and loading of presets.

Uses the original icon.

BENR  I don't understand.

If the Tyler's original work is now open sourced, and no-one is planning to try and make money from it, why aren't st373n and the Mad Hatter guy just contributing back to the main project?

Why have multiple forks going in different directions? Am I missing something?

SYLUSNOZAKI  I guess they r not contributing to the main project as thats going in a different direction, if you look at the transcoder-redux website you will see that they are rewriting tylers code into C to build their own product, both Ben (Mad Hatter Guy) and St373n are doing their own versions and expanding upon tylers code which is written in applescript.

Also if you look at videomonkey he has taken tylers UI and idea and rewritten in into C as a seperate product. Why not have multiple different video apps eventually they may do different things or some may do thing better than others, there is plenty of choice currently anyway with handbreak, ffmpeg, visualhub although now deceased, videomonkey, filmredux, Popcorn, Road Movie, Roxio Crunch etc, at the end of the day they are all only front ends for ffmpeg or mencoder.

TRANCE  this version is not good.

created avi files don't open and the viewing app (movist etc) crashes ....and btw avi files with mp4 audio? where's the mp3?

mov files with m4v extensions ...why?

extra libraries to clutter everything.

preferred the old icon ....this one is just a visualhub clone.

went back to the old version for now, hope it gets back on track.

p.s. what's with the version numbering ...MU shows 1.3.4, the app says 1.0.3, your site shows something else again

LAMPOON  Build on VisualHUB you should expect something good. So I gave this a try.

First thing I tried (simple mp4 file) : AppleScript Error "adcancedvideovox" of doesn't understand the swtich text message. (-1708)

And it freezes Filmredux

Second thing I tried (simple mkv file) : Start converting ... waiting ... waiting .. after 5 minutes ... no response from Filmredux. Freezes without a error message.

Thirth thing I tried (simple MPG file) : Applescript error

In short ... not usable in any sense. Still a lot of work to do I guess.

BKING1  Lampoon-

We're not quite to converting to mp4 yet. VisualHub's Developer dumped the projects on sourceforge and didn't give us any formats to work with. Please hang on while we work out the other formats

Thanks,

Ben

MAULRAT  I love all the new options that are available ... like the addition of meta tagging, the option to keep the surround track, the brightness/contrast/saturation sliders, the additional deinterlace options, the ability to preview a small portion of the movie and such but its still very buggy at the moment ... plus I havent been able to successfully convert any files yet (I tried a couple of avi's and mkv's) hopefully this will be addressed in future updates.

BENR  Is this release directly from the transcoder-redux project at Github, or is it a fork of that project? Is the source of this version available?

****.

TRANCE  works great ....at first impression seems to be the best of the new video converters (including the shareware ones).

still has a few features not yet implemented or working properly and is still missing some codecs/formats like avi/xvid encoding but has some things that visualhub did not like picture adjustments.

good job.
