Hulu Desktop is a lean-back viewing experience for your personal computer. It features a sleek new look that's optimized for use with standard Windows Media Center remote controls or Apple remote controls, allowing you to navigate Hulu's entire library with just six buttons. For users without remotes, the application is keyboard and mouse-enabled. Hulu Desktop is a downloadable application and will work on PCs and Macs. It will initially launch as a beta product during which we plan to gather and incorporate user feedback to improve the service.

LVWOLFMAN  First a note to all: Hulu.com is constrained by licenses with programming providers. Just as DVD movies are "Region" coded to protect distribution licenses, streaming video providers are also generally limited in distribution. What this means is that just as we in the United States aren't allowed to stream BBC TV's simulcast of BBC One, Those in most of the world (I'm not sure about Canada) are not allowed to stream video from Hulu.com.

This would of course, apply to any desktop application released by Hulu. So sorry Charlie, as you found out, the Hulu Desktop Apps are NOT workarounds to let you watch Hulu distributed videos in other countries.

Now... as the app goes, I'm running a late 2007 17" Mac Book Pro. On my 12mbps Cable modem, with my wife playing Second Life and streaming music, and me downloading from newsgroups on another machine at full speed and 20 connections, the high quality mode of the Hulu Desktop app was darn good. When I stopped the downloads it was fantastic!

I tried it as well on my 12" 1.33 Ghz Powerbook G4. This app isn't supposed to work with it, but it did. On the low setting I could watch it in a pinch but the video stopped far too often. But it DID work!

And yes, it works perfectly with my Apple Remote.

KNOWHOWE  If you're not in the USA, don't bother downloading this as it won't work. Thanks for not bothering to let us know in advance... Jeez.

STROB  Too bad because .9.4 has made some progress. The interface is now responsive. Moving in the menu is now really possible. Video quality adjustment is responsive for me too. Frame rate has gotten better although that is still not saying much considering Hulu's video quality.

Now for the bad news. Hulu's "high" quality is very jerky. Medium quality is better but the quality is poor. Low quality is too horrible to consider watching. CPU still revs up to 100% and that is using Flash 9. I would not even attempt to use Flash 10 with this.

STROB  Latest version .9.3 has gotten worse, now averaging about 1 fps. Very unresponsive controls, needing to quit the app to stop video. At times the video exhibits some weird zigzag pattern on all edges. There is still no way to adjust video quality - it ignores flash commands. Hulu CPU usage continues to average nearly 100%.

ORBEAVERS14  I don't know what to tell ya. I have only seen things get better and better on my end. I will agree with you that CPU usage is way too high. but I'm no where near 100% and I've also got a Gig though. Video quality has been just fine. So I have absolutely no Idea. Sorry, man.

BILL THE DOG FOOD GUY  This is one of the best apps around. I use it on my iMac 2.8 Intel with and HDMI cable to my 720p TV. When I first downloaded it it ran Southland with no commercials. The next day there was an update and I installed that. It ran commercials between episodes of Heroes. I don't know if it was the update that allowed for commercials or if they just did not have any advertisers for the Southland episodes.

One really good feature is when one show is done it will play the next show in the series with out searching for it.

It's a shame that Hulu does not work on the aTV. This just creates an extra step and cable to get it to my TV but it's better than watching it on my smaller screen.

STROB  Terrible interface with no way to lower video quality. Abominable performance: less than 5 fps and near 100% cpu. Next?

ORBEAVERS14  Under the settings there is the option on quality of the video. Also, Hulu has been taking this app by storm and has had an update for it either daily or bi-daily. So...Any issues that have been reported could possibly been taken care of. I have gotten this app since day one and It's been awesome.

WCITYMIKE  Very unimpressive. Crashed each time I tried to move the time cursor to another time, and doesn't offer "float on top." Using Fluid on the Hulu website actually offers more features, aside from the Apple remote control -- so that's a fairly sad commentary on this offering.
