Multiplex is a media manager for physical media DVDs and ripped DVDs on your system or external hard drive(s). Multiplex automatically detects all of your DVD media on the system, and provides metadata retrieval and cataloging features for your movies.

Beautifully designed to take advantage of Leopard's Core Animation libraries makes for a wonderful user experience.

Experimental Toast support (v9.x or better) built in.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.1:

Features:

  • All Core Animation issues have been fixed.
  • Multiplex will attempt to auto-fix permissions issues caused by upgrading to Snow Leopard.
  • New drawing code to alleviate problems with Snow Leopard.

Known Issues:

  • The “Hover” information view is missing. This is due to a bug in Snow Leopard, so it has been disabled until we can fix it across the board.

EGGSHELL  This app was exactly what I was searching for - a simple manager ( browser ) that unites all the movies that i have on my several HDs and uses the default system player when launching a film . The interface is minimalistic and pleasant to the eye but it needs much more polishing to make it really usable

- the 3D view is difficult to use with many films ( even in 1920x1080 full screen )

- title display in 3D view is plain ugly

- info on hover should at least be with reduced opacity

- the row view needs some kind of scroll / mouse control ( mouse buttons , mouse wheel , automatic scroll when cursor is over the edges or left/right from the center ... , there are many options )

- automatic hd scan by title - that should be a priority

- smaller memory usage - with 101 movies in my collection it takes 240mb ram ( way too much for a browser )

- sometimes on launch I get the loading spinning wheel not wanting to disappear , relaunch usually solves that

Developper should take a look at Plex for gui solutions and aesthetics

NBUET  I have been looking for an easy & light solution to know what movies I have backed up where. This means I need to identify a movie, and know on which disk/hard drive it is. None of these are actually on my laptop HD. Looks like a good match with Multiplex, right?

Unfortunately not... let me tell you what doesn't work for me:

1) Presentation - part 1: Images seems to be the most important thing in the world for this app. Fair enough, but what if this is not the case for me? Then I get a black rectangle, with the file name (no extension). Somehow, I also managed to have the black rectangle, without the filename. Then you basically have an invisible movie. Next step, ading an image. Don't do it wrong, because you can't remove it. You can probably change it, but NOT remove it.

2) Presentation - part 2: I don't like the default view (which is similar the the most visited sites in safari 4). The other view is an horizontal scroll, where the scroll bar is not displayed (why??). And going left or right is possible ONLY with mouse keys. And in any case, it doesn't work with the gesture on the trackpad. Last but not least, you will see very few of your movies with this setup...

3) Once you have added the movie to your collection, you remove the media. There is no way to know from which hard drive or disc you have taken this movie from. In my case, it says "disk1", while the volume name is Lacie, and the disk identifier is disk4s1 . I am also pretty sure that Multiplex will not warn me if I try to import the same movie a second time (TBC)

So let's be clear: Multiplex is exactly what I need. It is just lacking a few details, that make it a poor solution for me at the moment.

RANDOMA  One other additional comment - it would be nice if there was someway to email the developers directly. I really don't want to have to register for yet another web forum just to report a bug.

The bug in question is that the Premiere Date and Release date do not seem to get filled in with either "Find Information by UPC" or "Find Information by Title". Maybe they're not supposed to be, but since there's zero documentation, I have no idea....

Also, why does Multiplex connect to www.google-analytics.com on startup?

RANDOMA  I take it back! There is a way to email the developers directly - in the 'Help' feature you can go to 'Suggest Features' and then click on 'Report a Bug'. You can't however, simply go to to the MultiplexApp website and click on a 'Contact Us' or 'Report a Bug' link there.

ANONYMOUS  Hi! You can email us directly at support [at] multiplexapp.com. We do use Google Analytics to track site usage. Also, if you click the feedback button in the app and click on "Report a bug" you CAN report a bug from right within Multiplex. Thanks!

RANDOMA  Multiplex seems to be a good, if not quite yet done, product.. Some sort of manual, or instruction page (even) would probably be very helpful. Although I notice that, in this regard, Multiplex is the norm, not the exception.

I realize that writing documentation takes time, and is not nearly as interesting a writing code, or planning the next great feature, and I realize that after you spend months, or years with your head inside a program, everything looks obvious, so why on earth would you need documentation anyway! But judging by the comments here, and in the Multiplex forum, a little tiny read me file would go a long way.

BS0D  It froze the first 4 or 5 times I launched it, no idea why. I was ready to uninstall it because it was really, really annoying. I ended up leaving it on my computer, and i dont use it much now. Let's hope the last update fixes all the crashes.

It's missing a feature to automatically find the information about your movies / TV shows and stuff. Doing it manually when you have 1,000 movies is a real pain, let me tell you.

Also, it would be nice to have the option to add movies to your collection that you dont have on your computer to make the database complete.

Otherwise it's a pretty cool little application, although not that essential to have on your Mac. It's basically a movie database, except it adds the "wall presentation".

MACMIES  Nice looking program, but it's useless to me since it's Intel only.

The need for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard does not exclude PowerPC architecture and I'm very, very disappointed with this Intel-only trend. The is no technical reason why this app should not run on PowerPC.

INDYHALLLABS  Unfortunately, Apple has chosen to not keep their Core Animation libraries up to date for PPC architecture. The entire "Stadium" interface of Multiplex is drawn using Core Animation, and as such, excludes PPC users.

Given that Apple has decided to stop supporting PPC for it's next OS release, it was our decision to continue thinking forward and focus on maintaining currently supported systems.

We're sorry that you haven't upgraded yet, but we believe you'll find that you're going to be excluded from more and more new software as developers take advantage of Apple's new frameworks that they do not maintain for older systems.

INDYHALLLABS  SJK:

To be fair, Apple has not officially announced that they will be dropping PPC support, but the developer previews have been Intel Only and, as I mentioned, the PPC versions of Core Animation are out of date. If there's any chance of supporting PPC without sacrificing user experience, we'd love to do so.

We'll be finding out the details while we're at WWDC and if it looks like there's any chance that PPC will continue being supported in parallel to the growth of their Intel platform, and based on our findings we'll incorporate that into planning.

SJK  After recently getting an Intel Mac mini that'll run 10.6 I'm less bothered about it not being supported on my older PPC systems, which I've always suspected would happen. Hopefully we'll get the definitive word at WWDC. A lot more developers will consider releasing Intel-only products moving forward if indeed Apple drops PPC in 10.6.

DANIEL NEESLEY  Just got an email from the developer solving my problem.

"This odd, and relatively rare issue is caused by an old beta versions that corrupted preferences files when you start running the release version of Multiplex. It's relatively easy to fix.

Please either run the following command in the Terminal window:

cd ~/Library/Preferences/com.multiplexapp."

Kudos to developer for quick fix.

DANIEL NEESLEY  I have never been able to get this program to work. I just got the most recent version via the MacUpdate bundle, and got suckered again.

At least this version has an option to manually add movies. With my old version, one needed to depend SOLEY on the ability of Multiplex to find movies, which it did very poorly, hardly ever finding external drives.

Now I can add movies at will to a blank page which is headed by the title "Multiplex - Now Showing 7 Movies."

A BLANK PAGE!!!

The menu option to "Toggle Info Drawer" does absolutely nothing.

I got suckered again...
