EDITOR NOTES
This is the 3rd beta release.
DESCRIPTION
Tags allows you to manage all your files so that you can easily find the files that you need, when you need them.

Tag everything on your Mac: documents, emails, images and all other files. Quickly find files irrespective of where you saved them. You can bring up the Tag's UI with a simple keystroke in most applications, so that you can Tag files and search for Tags, wherever you are.

Tags are like keywords for files. Using tags allows you to group files which have something in common. You can apply many different Tags to a single file as well as apply the same Tag to multiple files. This allows you to associate files to one another in a way far superior to a rigid file / folder structure.

Features:

  • Tag Files directly in all supported applications
  • Full Spotlight Integration
  • Supports in application search
  • Create smart folders and mailboxes
  • Applescript support
Supported Applications: Tags works natively with basically all applications that properly support applescript.
  • Finder
  • Mail
  • Address Book
  • iPhoto
  • Safari
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel etc.)
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Xcode
  • Rapidweaver
  • Omnioutliner
  • Pages
  • Keynote
  • Quicktime
Of course, even if the App is not supported, you can still always tag the resulting file in the Finder!

FOTO555  Now we're talking! Tags 2 now makes this, in my opinion, the premiere tagging solution. Its new interface along with its new and enhanced features make this an incredibly useful utility.

KIHWANG KIM  I use yep and leap and fresh and Path Finder.

I think that Tag method is going to be good method filing any things.

So I tried Tags and bought it.

This is great little program in my opinion.

ICONZ113  If you have leap, doesn't that make yep sort of redundant? or is there some other functionality yep contains? I don't know much about those apps. Also do they actually import? or just tag files?

LOUNGE DELUXE  I have a SSD in my MacBook Pro and I have disabled Spotlight because the SSD is blazing fast at finding and accessing files, so there is no need for Spotlight and its indexing service. But I'm curious is Tags 2 will run on my system as it is supposed to, now that this new version sort of depends heavily on Spotlight?

MACSOLU  Bad call to disable Spotlight. Tags v2 depends on it, and a significant amount of OS components and Apple apps and 3rd-party apps also depend on it. Don't fight Spotlight; just accept it as a core OS feature that's pretty much required at this point.

LOUNGE DELUXE  Obviously Spotlight is not a core OS feature that is required in general because I had it already disabled in OS X 10.5 and it never resulted in an error or inability to perform a specific OS task. OS X allows you to disable it, and like I wrote before there is no need at all to use Spotlight because of the SSD with its blazing fast read capabilities and extremely low seek times (0.1ms versus at least 12ms for a regular hdd). EasyFind serves all my purposes.

My question was if Tags 2.0 would run without Spotlight or not.

TDEV  I’m not sure how these guys claim to support tagging in iPhoto.

If you apply the tag with this app it is not searchable in iPhoto

If you search using Tags for a tag applied to a pic in iPhoto it finds the photo... in the Finder, not in iPhoto and opens it in... Preview.

Searching through the iPhoto Library via the Finder is dangerous and can easily lead to a corrupted Library. You shouldn’t do it. And these guys shouldn’t claim to support iPhoto, or any form of Photo tagging.

Their tags are not complaint with Photo standards. They cannot be written to the file on export from iPhoto. The app is unaware of and does not support IPTC standards.

This app may do a lot of things, but it doesn’t “work natively” with iPhoto. It doesn’t work with it at all.

DOOBIEXX  This app is by far the best tagging app. One click and you easily apply tags to anything from websites to finder windows. Not sure about your problem before with iphoto as I don't use it but iphoto has it's own tagging system.... I think if you contact the dev your problems will be fixed. Don't quit on tags!! It's very intuitive and powerful.

HMURCHISON  I'll do a full review later when I feel more comfortable about the ins/outs of the app.

I initially thought Tags was too expensive but as a tagging front end and search tool it's simplistic but amazingly powerful. In most apps you just hit the keyboard shortcut and Tags has the item front facing ready to be tagged.

With a Tags front end, Default Folder X with OpenMeta for tagging on Open/Save and the OpenMeta stuff from Ironic Software it's becoming easy to tag and manage tags across your system.

I'm impressed with this app and how it fits into the nextgen metadata workflow in OS X.

FEMIGH  I had been looking for an app that would merely tag messages in Mail to compensate for poorly expressed subject headers. Mailtags does the job well, but does too many things. Then along comes Tags with its clean and fast interface for tagging virtually anything, including Mail messages. Glad I waited for it - am well into the evaluation period and very likely to pay the reasonable shareware fee after another week of looking for bugs (none so far). Tags makes creating and assigning (and removing) keywords easy and fast. I think of it as a cross-indexing complement to Spotlight and ABC Launch, especially for databases and spreadsheets that Spotlight cannot reach into. I do not tag a lot of things, but for certain projects the app makes a very good consolidator of different types of files, folders, URLs and email messages. The only thing I could wish for now is an ability to tag individual records within databases and spreadsheets.

JLOIF  I got into tagging thanks to this app. The fact that you can tag files directly inside other mac apps is genius.

PIZZACAKE  Tags appears to use extended attributes to store tags which is a good thing imho.

HINES2KJ  This app is a tagging dream come true.

But, if you finish a document, tag it, then make changes and resave that document, you will lose the tag. It's best to tag only finished documents, files, etc.

The way to delete tags is to select the file that has the tag, bring up Tags dialog and delete the tags in the field where you typed them in the first place.

I hope the developer continues to perfect this app, but the $30 is too steep, more of a $20, MAYBE $25. Had it been $20 I would have bought it toot sweet.

Will wait for a sale.

INGVO  1) Does not show when Mail.app is active (10.5.6 Mail 3.5), 2) Tag Window does not adjust to size, so if you have many tags in one file you do not see them, or if you have files with long filenames, the names are cut. 3) Quick Look does not work like in finder, so one quick look window after the other is opened. What would be great if the quick look window updates when you step with arrow keys through the list of results. 4) cant select more then one file in tag window. 5) Any idea to integrate Tags with Quicksilver?

INGVO  more: the file selected in tag window does not update if one steps through files in the background (command+tab to finder, tag window open)

is it possible to have tags a faceless programme (like quicksilver)
