DESCRIPTION
Find Any File searches your local disks for files by name, creation or modification date, size, or type and creator code (not by content, though).
As there are other tools with a similar search operation, here are the special features unique to Find Any File:
- Has a new hierarchical view of the found items, making it much easier to browse 100s of items (see the screenshot).
- Can run as root user, finding really any file on your disk, even those that are hidden from normal users.
- Can save queries and run them again later.
- Is quite fast: About 10 times faster than EasyFind 4.0.1 when searching for a file name (Mac Pro with 2 million files, searching "httpd.conf": EasyFind: 150s, this app: 15s)
Unlike Spotlight (i.e. the Finder's Find command), it does not access a pre-built database but searches the chosen volume directly. This allows you to find any file, even those inside packages and others excluded from Spotlight search. Hence it is great for finding system files, for example.
On the other hand, it may take a little longer than Spotlight, and it is only fast on HFS(+) volumes. But even on mounted network volumes of a Mac OS X server it can still be surprisingly fast.
Hence, this is not an entire replacement for Spotlight but it can come handy in certain, if not many, situations.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.4.2:
- Remembers position and size of Results windows again.
- Works again on systems with multiple accounts.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

HEXOKINASE Awesome! The only thing that I needed that this doesn't provide is an option for a boolean OR rather than AND in combining options. If I could "chain" each one with an AND/OR toggle -- even with a performance hit -- that would be awesome. I agree the default should not need this, but let's admit, this is really geared towards a "power user," otherwise, we'd be sheep and just use Spotlight to begin with and not be searching for a tool such as this. Still, thank you very much for such a wonderful tool. Another example of "simpler is better." :) (Version 1.4.2)

TEMPEL Actually, I have something like an "AND" search combination in the works, since Jan 2010. Just don't find the time to finish, polish, test and release it. Too much other things to do. That's actually one reason why I made it free: That relieves me of the need to update it because people paid for it ;) Anyway, the upcoming feature will allow you to have multiple "name" conditions (such as: name begins with "abc" and ends with ".txt", as well as multiple dates (one being "after", the other "before") so that you can search for time frames. TJLOEB1 Find Any File is a MUST have for any Mac user. When your Mac buries a file FAF will point you right to it. Saves many wasted hours digging through Finder Lists looking for that file you know is there, but can't remember where. (Version 1.4.2)

RORO01 THIS IS A TEN STARS UTILITY!!! It will find anything on your computer whether visible, invisible or packed inside an application. Spotlight is truly useless - Apple has got to learn a lot from Thomas Tempelmann! Cheers Thomas!!! (Version 1.4.2)

TEMPEL I'm pretty sure the guys at Apple know what they're doing. After all, Find Any File is just a copy of the "Sherlock" program from a few years ago. But thanks for the flowers, praise is always appreciated. :^) (Version 1.4.2)

MARSHALL P DEASY IV Find Any File Rules! If you are doing anything with lower level files and need to be absolutely sure that something does or doesn't exist then get this app. I love it. I have the App Icon on my Finder windows right next to the Finders search field and I use it every day! Just awesome! p.s. - This App does duplicate much of the Finder's built in search function but it is much easier to use and it's not trying to think for you, it just does exactly what you tell it. GRIDNIK Just love it!, after rediscovering in my apps folder - why? Because I was sick of using the usual Finder Find. I'm sending a couple of bucks along - it would be cool to have it planted in the menu bar too! (Version 1.4.2)

MARSHALL P DEASY IV Drag the Icon straight onto the Finder window at the top next to the built in search field. Hold for a sec till everything shifts then drop the app. Find Any File and the built in search sit next to each other in every Finder window. Just awesome!!!

MAC JOCKEY Find Any File is an improved version of Apple's Sherlock that Apple originally provided with OS 7 - and just as simple to use! It's a wonderful way to avoid having to deal with all the search results produced by Spotlight. Try Find Any File, and You'll Like It!! (Version 1.4.2)

Tired of spotlight's limited searching without having to tweak it (used to use Google Desktop but that got annoying) Loved OS9's finder find capabilities, but Apple seems to think we want less from our OS like windows versions. I want an OS that's one OS not ME, or HOME, or Premium. Just one and it has NO limitations unless you want them but you tweak them with the system pref panel like the Parent Controls. Anyway. when I want to search for something I want to find ALL instances of that something where ever they may be. (Version 1.3.1)
