SPRINGHEELMAC  Any chance to get it to use USPS.com's address lookup instead? It's located at 'http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp'. Considering that's the US Postal Service, I'd think it would be the most accurate.

CIMM  Thank you for the feedback. The API looks interesting but I'll have to check if we can apply for a "special permission" as they say on the website. I didn't walk this way yet as it means we need to include different logic for each country and check which countries provide these services (I contacted the Belgian postal service for example but they didn't even reply). So, in short, yes, you are right, it would be better and more accurate but I can't bare the workload at the moment to maintain it.

L008COM  Great idea for a plugin. Doesn't work though. It doesn't search by the street address. It searches ONLY by the city name. Not even city and state. So it returns close to 100 results per search, for results from states all over the country. Good idea for a plugin but its totally useless as it stands right now.

JIMW  Nice idea and implimented but unfortunately it usually is not actually fetching the zip code for my addresses. Given that it is a .10 version - i.e. not fully developed there is some reasonable excuse for this. If it were a 1.0 version its performance would not be acceptable. I am looking forward to the developer correcting its problems in the future as right now it is of little use to me.

VESPERDEM  FLASH1296: If you find this code so bloated, why don't you put your brain where your mouth is and help the developer out? The code is Open-Source so you should be able to go into his source and clean it up for him.

Personally, I don't understand what the problem is. It's a 14K download. How is this a bloated application?

My only complaint is that the site that is being used for searching postal codes is not very accurate. It doesn't even have my city in it. Manchester, MO is not that small and it's been around for well over 100 years.

CIMM  True, it's not the most accurate database there is but it's free an has a very liberal license. Have a look at www.geonames.org, it's a wiki like system so you can improve the database yourself. This will not only improve ZipCarton but all other services that use GeoNames as well.

It's an open source application with a public domain database as source. That's what I like about it: free and open. If everyone helps a very tiny little bit to improve the database we all get something out of it.

VESPERDEM  Thanks for the info on www.geonames.org! Turns out that someone has added Manchester in, I found it when I went there and did a search. I couldn't find any place to modify the postal code info for the search though.

Still, I fully understand using it for your program.

I still use the software and it works great for me.

Thanks for responding.

FLASH1296  Absurd !

Look at the size of this bloated thing.

Only an amateur would crunch code so poorly that a simple "one-trick pony" would be distributed at 20 times the size it need be.

Here is a simple tip to try:

If you just type a 5 digit zip code into Google you'll get the location of the Zip Code and a lot more.

A J BENAMU  The app is 13K not 13MB.

So it is not bloated as you claim.

FLASH1296  My apology/

It may be pointless but it is anything but bloated.

I guess that I misread it. Daman pain killers. Sorry/

WMARDIS  Sorry to rain on your parade, FLASH1296, but if I read the description for ZipCarton correctly, it will provide you the zip code for a city you enter into your address book. Google will, as you state, provide lots of information about the city whose name or zip code you search for but, if it gives you the zip code for the city, it's at least not intuitively obvious where to find it.

CIMM  There was a bug in the MacUpdate website that showed 14MB in stead of 14KB which explains why it seemed huge, MacUpdate solved the problem.

Thank you all for the kind replies. I created ZipCarton because it annoyed me to go to Google each time to find the ZIP code and maybe it can help others as well. If you don't like it don't download it or even better, get the source code at http://svn.milkcarton.be/zipcarton and improve it.
