SousChef... Most cooking software stops at organizing recipes. SousChef helps you cook, start to finish. Find a recipe, cook it, modify it and share it with friends & family -- all in one application.
Unlike other cooking software, SousChef accesses an online cloud database made up of all other users' recipes allowing users to quickly find new and delicious recipes. No more trips to the store to get that one missing ingredient either -- SousChef ranks recipe results based on what's in your pantry, or offers suggestions for substitutes.
Whether you're throwing dinner together at the last minute, or want to experiment with a favorite family recipe, SousChef handles the details so you can simply cook!
Also, SousChef offers a grocery list function, so you can create shopping lists from your favorite recipes!

- Crash: On some PowerPC machines SousChef would crash after performing a cloud search.
- Bug: ‘Tab’ and ‘Return’ accept autocompletion.

N. SILVA I got this program with MacHeist. While it has a clever recipe import feature, it makes a lot of mistakes when identifying ingredients. "Kosher" is not an ingredient, darnit (it's "Kosher salt"). When a recipe calls for garlic cloves, I don't want to see "cloves" added to my shopping list. No matter how many times I corrected it, it never learned. I got tired of correcting every ingredient and so was never able to use the shopping list feature. I have around 150 recipes in Yojimbo, but the process of importing them and correcting the ingredients took so long that I gave up. The program also caused me to lose data in another program, TextMate, because of its Services shortcut key (Shift-Cmd-R). I accidentally pressed that key combination while TextMate had a file dialog open. SousChef appeared unexpectedly and TextMate locked up. If I was starting a new recipe library from scratch, I would probably give SousChef another try. I liked the large-print display that I could easily read when my computer was sitting on the other side of the kitchen. The recipe search function was intriguing. It was fun to see what recipes other people have in their libraries (of course you can turn off sharing if you want to). I could not get the speech recognition to work, but I think that is a problem with my Mac, not with SousChef. It's a great idea if it works as advertised.

TARARNDIR SousChef implements service as per Apple's documentation. As far as I know there is no way that launching a service can crash another app. I think this is probably an unrelated issue with TextMate.

WINGSPAN I got this in MacHeist. Editing a recipe seems to be very buggy and/or unintuitive. I like the look and feel otherwise, but I can't seem to enter one simple recipe of my own without glitches or a crash. Anyone else see this problem?

PEDRO FARDILHA I also bought this under the MacHeist package, but actually didn't even get "that" far using it. I use metric (International ) unit system, something that SousChef can't handle. As so, this app will be pretty worthless for me and pretty much for all here in continental Europe.

TARARNDIR Check out the release notes for 1.2. We've added metric support and improved the import parser a lot in this release. We've also fixed some crashes in the recipe editor and improved the stability of several other parts of the app.

TAYLORBANKS I am a registered user, and overall really like the concept and much of the execution. Sadly, I find the search function to be almost useless. Search does not do partial text searches, so for example: if I have two recipes, one of which calls for "buffalo stew meat" and another of which calls for "buffalo or bison," searching for "buffalo" yields no results. Thus, you must know the /exact/ name of any ingredient you want to search for, and since there is no component to normalize ingredient names, I can't effecively search through my own (or online) recipes. In an email, the developer did indicate that he would look into this for a future version, but in the meantime, sadly, I'll have to resort to another tool.

TARARNDIR We are hoping to build out the parts of the recipe we search. Currently a full text search isn't possible, but the 1.0.2 update searches a lot more of the recipe than previous versions (although *not* full ingredient text). We'd like to get full text searching into our first major feature update (which will be v1.1), but we're also working hard on grocery list support and developing an iPhone sidekick app. Thanks for the feedback and just to reiterate, this is something we're working on.

HARRY MACBETH This is a very, VERY nice recipe organizer/presenter. Sharp-looking interface; easy-to-use; and a good feature set. The full-screen display in reversed-colour text is particularly effective. A good solid debut that I may well purchase even before the first point upgrade!
