DESCRIPTION
Pear Note integrates audio, video, and slides with traditional text notes. By recording all activity, Pear Note keeps track of what's going on while taking notes as well as what the user has to say about it. This makes Pear Note incredibly useful for important meetings, class settings, or speeches.

Recording Notes
Pear Note records audio, video, and what the user does, including typing notes and changing slides, on a timeline. Since keystrokes and slide changes are kept on this timeline, users can easily find what was being said during typing or a particular slide. They can play back an entire recording to recreate a meeting, or jump straight to the point in the audio they care most about.

Searching Instead of Organizing
With Pear Note, there's no need to manually organize notes to find them. Users simply bring up search and start typing, and the note they're looking for will pop right up. There's no need to manually sort notes into folders or categories. Pear Note finds notes transparently so they don't have to go looking.

RON BELL  Pear Note does what it claims it does and does that very well: You record video or audio presentations and take notes in a text field. Later, when you replay the rich media, a cursor highlights the relevant portion of your text notes. Alternatively, you can click anywhere in the text notes to immediately jump to the spot in the AV recording at which the notes were taken, enabling you to review the lecture for things you may have missed. Incredibly handy for taking notes on classes or for conducting interviews.

The text editor enables notes, lists, tables, and links. The text is spotlight searchable. (It would be superb if you could search for text in spotlight and immediately jump from that to the corresponding AV, or if Pear Note could use speech recognition to take notes for you, but those are not features at this point).

The program allows you to import audio and video and to add imports to existing Pear Note recordings.

The downsides?

* If you use this software often and fail to use its export functions to later decouple text from AV (text is separately exportable as RTF or text and video is exportable as QuickTime or AAC), you'll collect lengthy AV files on your hard drive, potentially taking up significant amounts of space. This is not a problem with the program--it's simply a function of the concept.

* If you record with your Mac's internal microphone rather than with an external microphone, your recording will inevitably pick up the sound of your typing, which somewhat limits the value of any AV export.

* The price is a bit steep for an app if you only use this occasionally so you'll want to try the program out thoroughly first to see if it makes a useful addition to your workflow.

RON BELL  Probably apparent, but I meant to differentiate between recording with the Mac's internal Mic from recording with an *external* mic.

ANDREW SCOTT  The point is well made about typing noise. It does tend to be quite obtrusive in the recordings when you use the internal microphone. I haven't tried using an external mic but I'd like to try. Perhaps the ideal arrangement would be a USB (or wireless) webcam with it's own mic.

UID_ZERO  I really recommend that you take a look Pear Note. It lets you take notes while recording audio (and optionally video). It integrates the recording with your notes when you play it back by highlighting what you were typing in sync with the playback. You can scrub around in the recording by clicking in the text. The program automatically skips to the point where you clicked.

You can also import slides and the program will synchronize the slides to your text and the recording.

This program really changes notetaking because it gives you the ability to easily fill in gaps in your notes and clarify the confusing or mistyped parts. If you're using your MacBook to take notes in meetings or class, this program is really useful.

The program is available from www.usefulfruit.com, where you can also

find a screencast demonstration and a free trial.
