DESCRIPTION
Swfdec... Mac users have had a love/hate relationship with Adobe Flash Player. On one hand, it's better than nothing, and it does what it is supposed to do very well. On the other hand, it was originally written more than ten years ago, it doesn't work with many of the new technologies introduced in Leopard, and it's only really been available as a Web browser plugin. And ever since Apple discontinued Flash support in QuickTime, it has had no real competition on Mac OS X - until now.

Swfdec (pronounced "swiff-deck") is an engine that loads and runs Adobe Flash animations. The Swfdec package includes:

  1. The Swfdec framework, which is the engine that drives all of the package's components.
  2. SwfdecPlayer, a desktop Flash animation player.
  3. A QuickLook plugin that generates thumbnails & full-size previews of the first frame of an animation file inside the Finder and open panels.
  4. And of course, what would a Flash engine be without a Web browser plugin? (Important: The plugin is only compatible with WebKit-based Web browsers, such as Safari or OmniWeb. It does not work in Gecko-based Web browsers, such as Firefox or Camino. Also, it is not installed by default.)

PIZZACAKE  How about releasing the quick look plug in separately. There's a few quick look plug in sites around to post to.

~S  Everything tested in the standalone player and I meet the requirements to run Swfdec:

-Poor performance (testing Intel Xeon 2,66GHz 5GB RAM) under some circumstances (maybe associated to setInterval tasks?)

-No menus (I can't copy-paste, for example, or "undo")

-Input text fields don't draw a white background but transparent (maybe an issue depending on your design)

-Issues with embedded fonts and dynamic text fields

-Doesn't respect fixed-width text fields (tested with static)

-Issues drawing edges (some drawings look awful!)

-Links in text fields won't work

-Doesn't work loadMovie under some circumstances

-No print

-Loading movies in higher levels (when available at all) will produce re-drawing issues (that is loads of red blocks around the window). Unload doesn't work at all. Various more issues.

-No resize window

-Doesn't respect "enabled" property of buttons

-Long etc.

Sorry, still not ready to be beta software, but keep on the good work! ;-)

~S  I forgot: no audio in my machine and more and more and more...

Kudos for the QuickLook plugin, though!

~S  Please, read the descriptions. I read that this framework/thing uses MacOS-specific technologies to show flash movies on screen. It is an attempt to run them better: faster, less CPU and RAM (I guess), etc. It provides also the tools for other developers to substitute Adobe's frameworks with Swfdec's ones.

Actually, in my machine it will eat more RAM and CPU than Adobe's player, won't play sounds, etc. But I'm sure it will improve its performance in a short future (cross fingers!)
