JEFF H.  So bummed that it this only works on Intel Macs.

I use my Mac as my only source of media and I would really love to have a more together multimedia interface. I work with Frontrow right now and its ok. Its better than nothing at all, but this looks great.

Oh well.

Cheers.

KOSOVAR1  "Release notes were unavailable when this listing was updated." I get so sick of reading this from developers who want to keep us in the dark and have us beta test away the flaws in their software. Of course, these flaws can damage our systems, cause us to lose data, and waste our time. They know plenty of people will beta test for them because geeks are naturally curious. And please don't respond with, "Don't complain! It's free software." The developer is not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts.

DANA SUTTON  Even if there’s no sinister motive for this practice of not publishing release notes, it’s a bad one. Imagine buying some food in the store and when you look to check its ingredients the mfr. only said “Ingredients list not available at this time.” Would you want to put the stuff in your mouth? And yet quite a few software developers expect us to put their stuff in our computers without giving us any idea what we’re getting. It might be a good idea for us to boycott software like this as a matter of principle, and the good people who run the MacUpdate site might want to think about refusing to post any software offerings that are not accompanied by release notes. This all sounds a bit harsh, I know, but how else are we consumers going to get developers to clean up their act?

MACLORNEBEYN  I really don't understand the criticism...

* In the title, the version number and the editor notes it is clearly stated that this actually is a beta version

* Open source communities depend on voluntary beta testers, lacking those convenient but cost-intensive Q&A departments of commercial developers. Therefore it is necessary for them to have their beta versions listed on pages like MacUpdate to recruit fresh and formerly uninvolved geeks

* If you do not want to be a beta-tester: there is a link to stable versions of this software on this very page

* Also there is direct link to the (well-done) community's website with all the information you could ever want

* Most of the open-source developers actually do all the work out of the goodness of their hearts (or maybe out of interest for the project), but definitely not for financial gain (except perhaps the chance to get better payed jobs when adding their involvement in open source to their CV)

D4RK  Plex is a software fork of XBMC, developed by different teams.

E_COMMERCE  As someone else asked (and got no answer), how does this compare to Plex? They're based on the same core, right?

OSXRULZ  Would be nice if under "Requirements" it specified Intel Mac to save us PowerPC users (yes, we're still around) the download. Would really like to try this out. Any chance of a UB version?

DX  Congrads to the developers. This is trully an amazing application. It transforms your Mac/AppleTV into an ultimate media center. I use XBMC both on an old xbox and recently installed it on my AppleTV. Once you use XBMC on the ATV, you realize that it was almost useless prior to the update. When I have friends over and I turn on my tv, they cannot believe my setup.

Also, cudos on the developers for maintaining a very helpful website and being very responsive to suggestions and bugs on their forum.

DEUCEDAVIS  I'm an avid and loyal Mac fan. I was skeptical about trying out XBMC on my ATV and Mac, but I have to tell you that it is superb. . .

I used to use iTunes and the aTV Front Row interface for some time, but I was looking for another solution that would simplify everything and hopefully could get some better performance.

I have to say . . . xbmc!!! did it for me. I simply rip my DVD and xbmc does the rest . . . scraping for all of the information and much more. Before, I had to manually change the file information via iTunes. No More, now I just dump my file to the NAS location, and the xbmc scraper does the rest.

The performance improvement . . . tremendous. I used to have intermittent choppiness via aTV and Front Row when accessing the files on my NAS Server . . . no more, well, at least not yet. I've been testing non-stop for the last week or so.

As for the installation process. It was easy too. I was worried about possibly bricking my aTV, but following the instructions to the tee . . . no problem.

I cannot rave enough about xbmc! I will still use iTunes for my music, the aTV interface for rentals, but for my own collection of movies, I'm going with xbmc.

I've loaded it on my aTV, macbook, and iMac.

get it, use it, you won't regret it.
