JOSHP  Their claim is NOT that it's a MobileMe alternative. Here is the claim from their site itself: "Just Sync, No-frills!"

JOSHP  Sorry, that was supposed to be a reply to TimTim.

P.S. This program works as advertised and I am happy with it.

JOELES  Installation and setup was very easy, but there is zero documentation (thats the reason for just 4 stars). I guess the lack of documentation is okay, because the app is still in beta and their support is very responsive (they replied literally within seconds to my email).

Installation and setup is like this:

- download the app

- unzip (doubleclick the zip file)

- doubleclick the unzipped prefpane

- select "install only for current user" (got this hint from their support)

- the app/prefpane starts

- enter your emailadress, a password and a password confirmation

- after a few seconds you get an email with your activation link - click it

- activate "always synchronize" in the prefpane

- click "synchronize now" in the prefpane

- ready

of course the app isn't very helpful if you don't install it on another computer.

so do the same on another computer (i tried it on my imac and my macbook). of course you shouldn't create a second account, but use the one you created on the first computer.

their support told me, that installation is easier if you decide which computer has your "master" addressbook and install on this system first, sync with the server, than delete the addressbook on the "slave" computer and install fruux there, too.

TIM27  this sounds way more complicated than just copying the address book data file from one computer to another. i guess it would be helpful if you were doing this to more than one other computer, but still...

JOELES  Well, I suppose it's just because the beta does no "data-mingling" yet.

So when initially setup, "John Doe" on mac1 might be not the same than "John Doe" on mac2 and thus you could end up with duplicates.

When you managed this initial steps, it works like charm. I added a third mac to my sync set yesterday and whenever I add a contact, change a contact etc. it is synced to the other macs. Thats pretty nice.

MACHHEAD  TimTim:

Where did they claim that they offer a MobileMe replacement?

They offer a replacement for the syncing stuff, their app is still in beta and even though it works already very stable.

fruux is simply the most promising initiative related to syncing I have seen in a while.

They get 5 stars from me, even they currently lack docs and the app has still some minor issues.

It's free (at least at the moment) they reply in seconds to my mails and their app is still in beta. I am really looking forward for the future of this project.

The only issue (for me) is, that it's currently not possible to select which data is synced, but they told me that this feature will be added soon.

For a 0.8 version fruux is really great.

MACLOVER1.1  I wish someone would develop something like this as a hybrid ftp/synch software that would synch chosen my own chosen preferences, mails, calendars and so on but using my own domain/ftp.

ERUNNO  Great app, also also for people who want to backup their bookmarks and calendars online and don't use Time Machine or just need to sync data between several Macs. After reinstalling my OS X it restored my bookmarks and calendar entries without a hitch.

There are still some interface issues which I hope will be resolved in the upcoming versions. An auto updater is still missing so you have to manually check out Macupdate occasionally. I also haven't been able to find a way to change the password after the account has been created.

Anyway, thanks to the developers for offering this service for free!

ELEGRAPHY  The minimum requirement on MU is wrong; on their website it says fruux is required Mac OS X 10.5.6, not 10.5.8. I am running 10.5.6, and fruux 0.9.6.4 works fine on it!
