TRRLL Tried out the Solver. Like the one in OpenOffice, it lacks the power of Excel's Solver (which MS omitted from Excel 2008). The StarOffice solver choked on a simple nonlinear regression problem that the Excel solver handles with ease. (Version 9.0b)
MJEDI I think the beta versions are free. Eventually they'll be putting it out for sale. The website says $69 right now for their other versions. It looks promising but I'll stick with NeoOffice. (Version 9.0b)
SCOTTISHWILDCAT No, StarOffice 9 includes some proprietary technologies that aren't in OpenOffice 3.0, so Sun has to charge for those. Other than that, the two products will be mostly identical. (Version 9.0b)

PMULLINS11 I've used NeoOffice for a long time because the native port of OpenOffice.org was so slow. StarOffice 9.0b is, by far, the fastest implementation of OpenOffice.org that I've ever used on a Mac. It opens Writer in roughly 4 seconds on my MacBook Pro. I love NeoOffice, I even donated to the dev team, but I think I just found my new office suite. (Version 9.0b)
MACUPDATE ADMIN MacUpdate would very much like to provide a direct link to the StarOffice download, unfortunately the Sun site will not allow it. We tried, can't be done. (Version 9.0b)
