EDITOR NOTES
From the developer's site: "THIS PROJECT IS NOT UPDATED ANYMORE AS OF MARCH 1st 2009. VERSION 1.6 WILL BE THE LATEST VERSION OF MATHUSALEM."
DESCRIPTION
Mathusalem is a robust and unintrusive backup system for Mac OS X Leopard, which can be used either as a System Preferences pane or directly as a command line tool.
Mathusalem is complementary to Time Machine as it backups automatically one or more directories of your choice to remote servers in order ensure extra safety of your most important data. Be aware that Mathusalem is not designed to "clone" an entire file system or a subportion of it, but instead to optimally handle everyday simple backups.
- Mathusalem supports a wide range of destinations: local drives, iDisk, WebDAV, AFP, SMB, FTP, SFTP or Amazon S3
- It can generate archives in various formats: sparse or compressed .dmg and CPIO or ZIP archives
- It generates fully self-contained backups i.e. data and settings which makes it possible to access them from any machine or even relocate them
- It can restart a download or upload that failed or was cancelled by the user without having to restart the entire backup
- It runs in low-priority mode on your machine so it doesn't hang your CPU or hard drive
- It runs only when necessary (it is managed by launchd like other system services)
- It is fully open-source which means no proprietary file formats (backup data files are plain XML)
- It stores passwords in the Keychain
- It reports detailed information on the backup progress
- The command line tool version can be integrated in existing tool chains or used with launchd

TEKL Would be nice to be able to backup also from ftp to the local disk. Or can someone recommend a scheduled backup solution for websites? (Version 1.6)

VALENTINISSIMO Mathusalem answers all my wishes for a back-up solution: Tested it with 600 MB worth of data sent to iDisk, S3 and to external disk and all three work like a charm. I especially like the way the retrieve function was designed. I had to do some experimenting with different settings because the documentation is not as good as with a commercial product. On the other hand you get a very little intrusive piece of software which works quite intuively. (Version 1.5)

PHILIPBECK I am getting an error message that I don't understand - "Unable to read BOM file (null)" What does that mean and what do I do? Is there a way to email the developer except through this review?

POL-ONLINE Regarding excluded files / directories: you must choose the right table: exclude either by name or full-path. There is _no_ pattern matching however. AFAIK, exclusion works fine. Amazon S3 seems to work for the majority of users (if not all) as there are no issue report so far. However, there is a pending issue on Mathusalem stuck in "idle" mode that a few users experienced: http://code.google.com/p/mathusalem/issues/detail?id=55 If you have any info on this, please add a comment to the issue, so that it can be investigated. POL-ONLINE If you want to back up to an FTP server, make sure to select FTP in the destination type, not SFTP. SFTP is for file transfers over SSH, so it won't work at all with FTP servers! (Version 1.2)

JETFIREDX Doesn't work with my Comcast FTP webspace. Shows connecting with ssh:// instead of ftp://. (I read the instructions and did not put the leading ftp:// in server name) Console logs show that the backup completes with result null and nothing is in my ftp folder. Looks like it will be a nice tool when its working. (Version 1.1)

You should consider posting your issues in the developers queue located at: http://code.google.com/p/mathusalem/issues/list I've posted two issues there and they were both fixed or added the next day. A really, really great program especially when coupled with S3, the only place where time machine can't take you. (Version 1.2)

POL-ONLINE You must have selected "SFTP" instead of "FTP": SFTP is SSH based, so it won't work at all with your Comcast FTP server! (Version 1.2)

JETFIREDX I tried them both when my initial selection of ftp failed with the errors I mentioned above. I tried several times making different backup configurations to make sure I was covering the options. I did select FTP. There is no need to yell about it on a forum. I deleted everything, reinstalled Mathusalem tonight and tried again and it appears to be working. It is quick and looks to work very well. However, I'll not be sending any bugs if this is how you respond to a legitimate issue. (Version 1.2)

BORLOX Promising, but doesn't yet deliver. I tried to use this to back up my home directory to S3. I chose an encrypted compressed disk image as the archive type. It made a complete local copy of the source directory, including all the files I had excluded from backup, then stalled with the progress dialog showing "idle". No data was uploaded. Also, I noticed that it can't create a new bucket if one already exists. If the developer keeps working on it, this might be a useful app someday. (Version 1.0b11)
