DESCRIPTION
LoginControl... Control your Login Items

For a few years, the built-in System Preferences has lacked certain control over the applications and items that are opened when you log in (Login Items) and this tool gives control back to the user.

Due to features newly available in Leopard, this application gives you complete control over your Login Items like never before available in Mac OS X, or by any other application currently available.

Using LoginControl, you can reorder, add, and remove items to your Login Items. New in 2.0, due to popular demand, you can have multiple "sets" of Login Items to switch between.

Features

  • Allows for finer control over Login Items than OS X provides
  • Small, lightweight file and concise user interface
  • Uses features new to Leopard for unmatched reliability
  • Synchronized in Real-time with Login Items
WHAT'S NEW
Version 3.0.1:
  • Added support for 64-bit systems
  • Fixed bug that rarely occurred when reordering a column
REQUIREMENTS

JIMW  Thanks for refreshing my memory about Tinker Tool. It has all the flexibility of Login Control (2.0)) and more. I despise the the bait and switch approach that some developers use to snare customers, especially those that use this technical for "one trick ponies" as a marketing technique in order to trick the less tach savvy buyers into spending far more money for a product than they would have if they had of known what the final price would be up front before they purchased the product. Instead such developers sneak up the price in overpriced 'upgrades' that typically only offer marginal feature improvements in order to get customer to purchase bug fixes that address issues that should have been caught in the original release. Their philosophy is that if a customer has already paid for the product once they will pay again at the inflated price for convenience. My philosophy is that if a developer pulls this trick on me, I look for a viable substitute, so I can dump the product and thus avoid any future losses.

In my experience, I rarely find a situation that getting rid of a 'one trick pony' for a viable substitute involves any substantial loss of time, data, or capability.

Thanks again for reminded me about Tinker Tool - a tool with a long history of being a great product with many features. Login Control is now gone from my machine.

KEN BURNS EFFECT  10 dollars (raised from 5) is just too much for this featureless app!

Sure it does make it a bit easier managing login items but is lacking editing of List names, drag n drop between lists etc.

It should still be in 1.x stadium and/or still 5 $. In fact, for such a simple app free would be more appropriate.

As for the competition, a much more feature rich app is indeed available for free. It handles Login Items somewhat different but perhaps in a more easily understood manner. And much more.

The inevitable conclusion, save a tenner - Use TinkerTool.

EAN  Great! In Leopard one can only move login items to the end of the list, which can make it possible to reorder things with a lot of judicious dragging, but this is way better. I do wish that it also controlled the "Hide" feature.

IIRC, the "simultaneous" launching of login items ended wlth Tiger.

COLDFUSION1970  Also i believe that Mac OS X actually launches all those login items at the same time, so it doesnt matter what order you sort them into.

COLDFUSION1970  @ macsterdam

Thats because they all launch at the same time (eg. immediately after login) in 10.5.

MACSTERDAM  I should have been more specific. yes, you can re-order login items, but you can only move them to the bottom of the list. Not very convenient at all.

Although true that login items launch many at a time, having a particular items launch first can be very useful!

fyi - I use macpilot to sort my login items. much more convenient.
