DESCRIPTION
Tag Folders... Smart Folders with Drag-and-Drop simplicity.

Smart Folders can find a file anywhere on your computer. Regular folders let you organize your files with ease. Tag Folders do both.

Drop any file onto a Tag Folder, and it will immediately be tagged to match the Tag Folder's search criteria. Open the Tag Folder, and every file with that tag appears in a Finder window, available for use.

Customizable and easy as pie... Making a new Tag Folder is as simple as clicking on the "New Tag" Tag Folder. Drop files onto "New Tag" to automatically make a new Tag Folder to contain them.

Modify your Tag Folder's search criteria to make it as simple or as complex as you like. It will add all the specified tags to the files dropped onto it. It can be set to only tag files that meet certain criteria. It can even remove unwanted tags at the same time.

Nesting instincts... Tag Folders can nest inside one another. Simply drop one Tag Folder onto another to create a hierarchy of Tag Folders.

Nested Tag Folders inherit the tags of their parents, and pass them on to their children. Add your "Project 1" Tag Folder to your "Work" Tag Folder, and any files added to "Project 1" will also appear in "Work".

Plays well with others... Tag Folders uses the emerging OpenMeta tagging standard for Mac OS X, which makes one set of tags universally accessible to all apps that support them. Tag Folders works seamlessly with all OpenMeta apps. Tag Folders can also write copies of tags to Spotlight Comments to maintain compatibility with legacy tagging applications that don't yet support OpenMeta, such as TagBot, Leap (v 1.1), Punakea, the Quicksilver File Tagging plugin, and more. You may also define a custom syntax to suit your needs.

Fits your style... Tag Folders can be accessed any way you like. Put them in the Finder Sidebar. Add your favourites to the Dock, or all of them in a Stack. Add a Finder toolbar button to choose them from a list. Store them on your Desktop, or in Documents, or wherever you want. Use dialogs instead of drag-and-drop, if you prefer. It is up to you.

Tag Folders keep track of themselves, and can always be accessed from a central location of your choosing, no matter where they are.

Automated, because that's what computers are for... Tag Folders includes a helper application called Tag Prompter that makes it almost effortless to keep your files properly tagged and organized. Tag Prompter watches folders for new or modified files and prompts you to tag them automatically. Save a file, and a dialog box will appear within a moment or two offering to tag that document by adding it to any Tag Folders you choose. Aside from selecting the appropriate Tag Folder(s) from the list, no further work on your part is needed.

And more... Tag Folders have more features designed to make them as simple and as powerful as possible. Read about them in the user guide.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.4:
  • Now checks for updates and prompts the user to download them. Checks occur once per week.
  • Fixes a bug where some users would only see the alphabetically last Tag Folder in the list when using dialog boxes to work with them.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

SESQUIPEDALIAN  I think I need to look into finding hosting on another server. This one (vndv.com) seems to be getting flakey...

Sometime this afternoon the zip file somehow became 0 B in length instead of its proper 3.3 MB, causing the download to be just an empty file. I've uploaded another copy now, and it seems to be downloading properly. If there are any more problems, email me at tag-folders@googlegroups.com

VITEZSLAV SICHTAR  Ive been using Tag folders for a while and im pretty satisfied with its function. I only have one error message which im not sure if its connected either to finder issue or Tag folders. When i want to open one of my tag folder (others work while opening and tagging just fine) there is an error : "The operation could not be completed." I click OK and another message is : "Finder is busy". After this i can either edit or click OK. When i tried edit it opened tag folders code. I have no idea what to do to keep my folder alive again. Thank you for your reactions and suggestions.

SESQUIPEDALIAN  If you go to the Tag Folder support group and post your problem there, it will be much easier to try to fix your problem. The address for the support group is http://groups.google.com/group/tag-folders. You can also get there by clicking the More Information link at the top of this MacUpdate page, and going to the support section of the Tag Folders website.

MACFIDELITY  Hello,

i was trying to test version 1.2 today.

Seems like the Install Tag Folders.app has a serious problem. In my case i just get a dialog which is higher then my entire screen displaying permission denies for each copy operation in your script.

So it looks for me like your installer script is not able to offer a password dialog if a non-admin users tries to run the installer.

Most apps do offer a authentification dialog if a non-admin user tries to install something.

Advantage: users can keep non-admins and just use an admin-account for installations without being forced to swtich to that admin account.

At least that is what it looks like at the moment for me.

Feel free to contact me if you need screenshots about that problem or anything else.

best regards

fidel

MATHEW  I've tried this out for 15 minutes. It seems to work pretty easily in terms of creating Smart folders. But it does not actually seem to tag new files. I created 2 new tag folders, then would drag a file onto it. But that file would not get tagged. (The tag folder itself DID contain other items with the tagging criteria--items that had been tagged in some other application at another time.)

I like the idea of this product, but the automatic tagging doesn't seem to be working. I'm using 10.5.4

SESQUIPEDALIAN  Do the tags appear in the Spotlight comments section of the Info window of the file?

During testing I noticed that occasionally files on the Desktop would have the tag applied to their Spotlight comments, but it would take a few minutes for the change to be reflected in the Spotlight database, and thus for the file to show up in the Tag Folder's Smart Folder. This always cleared itself up after a few minutes on the occasions it happened. If you want an immediate fix, temporarily moving the file into another folder typically does the job.
