DESCRIPTION
RipIt... Movies are great, but discs are a pain. RipIt gets your movies off the disc and onto your Mac, where it's easier to find, organize and play them.

Why Rip Your DVDs?

  • Use your laptop longer!
Laptops use a lot more juice when they're spinning a DVD and a hard drive.
  • Easily organize your movies!
Moving files around on your computer is a lot easier than alphabetizing shelves full of DVDs.
  • Find movies faster!
Use your Mac's built in search tool, Spotlight, to find a movie in your collection... instantly.
  • Peace of mind!
Movies stored safely in your computer can't get lost, scratched or broken.
  • Simplify entertainment on the go!
Why carry around bulky DVD cases or disc wallets when you don't have to?

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2.11:
  • Fixed an occasional problem that caused a crash.
  • Fixed an incompatibility with Handbrake that caused "PS demux" errors.

AHASVER  I like ripit very much even though I own it for just a short time. It speeds up my netflix cycle and I can watch my fav DVDs without the hassle of looking for the disc. And it is much faster than any of the conversion tools I tried. And if you don't intent to put it onto your ipod anyway...

THE CROW  This is a fantastic ripper, and works flawlessly most of the time (some of the newest movies introduce new DRM mechanisms that fool RipIt, but the developer updates the software very quickly). A recent update broke RipIt on my G5 Mac, but after an email to the developer, it was fixed and a new release posted within the day - that is amazing.

The software does a great job of making a perfect duplicate, free of its protection schemes, which the user can then use to backup their movie, or run through Handbrake to convert to an AppleTV or iPod format.

DRU KEPPLE  Sorry to post a question in the review section, but that's MacUpdate's fault for not having a question section!

So, it seems that there's quite a bit of disagreement on this forum about what exactly RipIt is good for. It sounds like some have had some good success on ripping otherwise hard-to-rip discs, and others have not.

Here's a specific question: how well does RipIt handle recent Pixar releases? I've been quite happy with HandBrake (and optionally Mac the Ripper), but they've choked on Ratatouille and Wall-e, and I've had to turn to enormously complex alternate routes that involved PC software, demuxing software, and DVD Studio Pro. If I could just get a decrypted disc image onto my Mac easily, I'm sure this wouldn't be such a pain.

It seems like Disney and Pixar have been putting crazy tough encryption on their discs lately...who can free these discs? Who can liberate this media to its rightful place in iTunes? Is RipIt the One?

CORPSECORPS  Seem to be some nasty regressions in recent Ripit versions for many people. In my case, it seems to rip most anything i give it... kinda.

Occasionally the result won't even play with Apple's DVD Player, and when it does, the rip will usually confound just about every re-authoring and conversion tool i try.

AIKOUSHA  I can't really say anything good about this because I couldn't get it to rip a single DVD, other than the one that was burned by my DVD-Recorder (that was to see if there was a drive incompatibility with the program, which there isn't).

I tried 5 discs that were tough for other rippers. Yet, it couldn't get a singe one, usually failing within 20 seconds of starting. All the DVDs play flawlessly in an ancient region-free DVD player.

It doesn't have features... it's supposed to just rip DVDs, but I have 3 free apps that do this, and at least one of them will read images, so it plays well with fair mount. This doesn't. I gave it a 2 because if it really worked, one feature would be more than enough... and, unlike previous versions, it no longer seems to freak out over non-matching region discs. However, it shouldn't even have to deal with that, and I'm not really certain that that might still be the issue, as there is nothing that tells you why it stops or has trouble with discs.

Ease of use... same as above, you stick in a DVD disc. Hmmm, but that didn't always work, it often didn't realize the disc was in there, even though the system did. Often requiring an eject and then re-insertion. However, due to the lack of recognizing a disc as an image, I had to knock it down to a one. Every disc I gave it might have succeeded if it did. At least one disc does this with one of the free apps.

Value: if I have to pay $20 for something that won't read the discs everything else I have won't, then it's fairly useless. Start working like some of the Windows-side apps (or the old "Locksmith" program from Apple II days) then you will quickly get a "5."

It didn't crash, but it halts rather quickly on everything I threw at it, and it does have that odd quirk of sometimes not recognizing the disc is there.

On top of that, it only works under Leopard. What feature of Leopard is an absolute requirement in a DVD ripper? It certainly isn't helping this program read commercial discs.

Looking forward to a major upgrade. Hopefully by then it can rip the older discs (5+ years old) that I gave it, as well as the newer ones with sophisticated protections.

DANMARC  well it´s simplistic I know but it can handle quite a few DVD´s I have thrown at it ...so full respect . Have used Handbrake and MTR (ahh my classic ; ) ) but they have their own quirky behavior and lets face it Ripit is basic indeed but that is in my opinion not bad thing.

Only odd behavior would be the "complete" package file it creates...but in the those instances I need to split those files I use Handbrake.

MTR hasn´t (officially) bee upgraded for a long time so right here right now I really enjoy the simplicity of Ripit (AND the constant updates19

MCD3  You can rip and then put the file through DTOX to get the movie only

uncheck "use.dvdmedia" as filename-should make VOB files

But can Ripit handle the traps? CSS, ArcoS, RCE?

Can it take away region coding?

Get rid of Macrovision?

RIPIT  We're looking into this. It seems to be happening very consistently for a few people, and not at all for others. We'll have a fix as soon as we're confident that we've found the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience.

MADRUSSIAN  So this might be a rather ignorant question but I am pretty new to this so please bear with me :-)

I am reading some of the comments and the bundle description and am unsure about the purpose of using tools like RipIt and DVDRemaster (or MTR and Handbrake) together? My (limited) understanding is that they are both DVD ripping tools but used for different purposes?

RIPIT  DVDRemaster recompresses the movie, introducing artifacts and decreasing image/sound quality -- by how much, depends on the settings and the way that the disc was mastered to begin with. It won't deal with complicated DRM/Copy-Protection.

RipIt produces disc images with no image/sound quality degradation. It will deal with compliated DRM/Copy-Protection. For some discs, it's best to use RipIt before using DVDRemaster.

BEAMY  Does Ripit remove the region protection code and RCE protection, so that the ripped DVD is regionfree ?
