DESCRIPTION
RipIt... Movies are great, but discs are a pain. RipIt gets your movies off the disc and onto your Mac, where it's easier to find, organize and play them.
Why Rip Your DVDs?
- Use your laptop longer!
Laptops use a lot more juice when they're spinning a DVD and a hard drive.
- Easily organize your movies!
Moving files around on your computer is a lot easier than alphabetizing shelves full of DVDs.
- Find movies faster!
Use your Mac's built in search tool, Spotlight, to find a movie in your collection... instantly.
- Peace of mind!
Movies stored safely in your computer can't get lost, scratched or broken.
- Simplify entertainment on the go!
Why carry around bulky DVD cases or disc wallets when you don't have to?
WHAT'S NEW

G4JAY The developer of MTR could learn a lesson from these RipIt folks. This is how to properly publish a DVD ripping application for the Mac. You make some software and you sell it. Simple as that. No taking "donations" from people only to hold off on development of the software because of a divorce. Real tech support too. Not bashing the innocent in forum threads. (Version 1.2.1)

ROBOTANK I have to agree with you. The way in which MTR 3 is distributed is a joke. You have to sign up for a forum and jump through a couple hoops just to earn the privilege of giving the dev your money. Once you've managed to "make a gift" (no minimum required amount is provided--you have to guess), you will hopefully receive the app, but you will be pestered for more money, both within the app itself and on the forums. All this for something that's been in beta for years and hasn't seen an update since January 08. I can understand wanting to have a private beta run, but at this point it's just a sham. First of all, it seems to me that any shelter from possible legal issues is rendered moot by the common knowledge of MTR 3's existence and where and how to obtain it. Second, I don't think it's quite right for the developer of a beta app, who doesn't even provide regular updates, to continually demand more money from his customers (and threaten to halt development if he doesn't get it). He could have made a fortune if he had just sold the thing as shareware and held off on all the nonsense. Now RipIt has come along and made it possible to dump MTR altogether. Thank you, RipIt developers, for making this application and for making substantial improvements with each update. Thank you also for distributing it in a reasonable fashion. (Version 1.2.1)

WJB3WVU Ditto, ditto, ditto. I was a regular contributor to MTR, but it finally began to feel a little too much like extortion. Now, even as a prior donater, getting the newest version requires jumping through so many hoops that it makes your head hurt. I wrote off MTR about a year ago. (Version 1.2.1)

MSWFUJOWDFFYC In the plus column... 1. The developers seem highly motivated and passionate about developing this DVD ripping tool. They are vocal about the fact that this app is in its early stages. They have active support forums on their websites and they answer people's questions. 2. They regularly update the program so it will work with the latest copy-protected DVDs. 3. At less than $20, it's reasonably priced. 4. It is able to rip DVDs that are protected by ARccOS and other copy protection schemes. 1. Even though it's able to rip ARccOS-protected DVDs, and the image of that DVD can live on your hard dive and be viewed with DVD player, etc., it DOES NOT appear to actually REMOVE the ARccOS protection! What does this mean? It means you can't use Toast, or DVD2One, or whatever to burn to a DVD that can be played in a standard player! They say that they are working on this, and that when they get something working, they'll release a free tool to remove ARccOS from rips previously made by RipIt. Until then, however, you're S.O.L. unless you want to use a Windoze machine. One silver lining to this dark cloud... in many cases, Handbrake doesn't seem to blink at these ARccOS protected VIDEO_TS folders and is often able to transcode them to divx, h.264, blah blah blah. 2. This software rips. That's it. It doesn't seem to remove region coding, which really blows. MacTheRipper can do it. It doesn't remove any of the discs protections, like letting you fast forward through FBI warnings, etc. MTR, can do it too. It has almost nothing in the way of features. You put a disc in, and it rips it. Other than decrypting the CSS, it leaves the disc completely untouched. 3. When it rips, it doesn't put a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive. It creates a package with a ".dvdmedia" extension. DVD Player likes it, but most other programs have no idea what to do with it. To get the VIDEO_TS folder, you have to command-click on the file, select "Show package contents" and either move the VIDEO_TS folder out to a regular folder or drag and drop it on an app if it will let you. RIPIT Great feedback! We listen to our users, and we try to build what the people want. ;) Insofar as points 1 and 2, we're working on that... but we want to do it "right." -- MacTheRipper has entirely too many knobs and levers that must be frequently fiddled-with to get the best possible results for a particular movie. This just isn't satisfying to us... we'd prefer something a little more automatic. As for your last point, we've just introduced a new option in our preferences panel that will cause RipIt to output bare-folders. (Version 1.1.4)

DAN BUCHAN Instead of *moving* the VIDEO_TS folder out of the ripped DVD package file, just make an alias of it at the same level of the ripped image. For example, after I rip a DVD I create a folder with the title of the movie/show/etc. and place the ripped DVD image inside it. Then I control-click (or right-click) on the DVD image file, show package contents, then make an alias of the VIDEO_TS folder at the root level of the folder that contains the DVD image. Then you can drop that onto VLC and it will act just like you have the physical DVD in the drive. (Version 1.1.5)

MATT MUSANTE If you regularly use Toast or Popcorn to burn the movies you'll know that they don't like the .dvdmedia folder. You can just go into RipIt preferences and tell it not to use the .dvdmedia extension and you'll get a disc title - named folder with a VIDEO_TS inside it. If you're like me and use Mulitplex, you need those .dvdmedia extensions on there. If I'm not going to watch the movie on my mac but I just want to burn in Toast or Popcorn, I just remove the .dvdmedia extension on the folder and that gets me the same thing. (Version 1.2.11)

MBHOCKEY RipIt finally picks up where the ridiculously greedy and selfish MacTheRipper "team" dropped the ball about a year ago. Required "donations", ridiculous hoops to jump through, the way their forums are censored (heaven forbid you critique the Holy Application) are prime examples of the detriment that MTR has become to the Mac community. RipIt returns to basics. Up front pricing (which is less than half than the required donation for MTR). Simple, intuitive interface. And it works. Thank you! (Version 1.1.2)

HOTFUSION You can make fun of MTR, but their secrecy is largely why it still exists. If this is allowed to continue for another year, I'll eat your hat. It's simply to public. (Version 1.1.2)

I didn't see any joke in what was written. Somebody simply wrote the truth about Geezerbutts and wise little Weasel. Greed got the better of them. I've dropped MTR in favour of RipIt and the asking price for RipIt is more than acceptable. (Version 1.1.2)

MSM126 It's been over a month. Multiple attempts at getting an email response from the developer on the numerous issues with this app. No reply. The claimed successful rip rate for this app is bogus. Do NOT buy it with out first trying to rip movies AND watching the rips. The app reports success, yet when you watch the ripped movies you'll find that I high percentage are messed up with chapters out of order, repeated and in some cases missing. Try ripping Bolt. Try ripping many others. Just make sure you watch them, rather than relying on RIpIt to tell you whether the rip is successful. (Version 1.2.12)

ST00P!D M0NK3Y Thanks for being the alternative to MactheRipper. It may not have as many options as MTR, but at least it works on new DVD releases and I can use other third-party apps to do what I want with the VIDEO_TS files. For those of you confused by the file RipIt makes, just right-click it and select "Show Package Contents" and it will open the folder revealing the VIDEO_TS files and you can do what you want with those. DVD2OneX2, Toast, and Apple DVD Player can read these files, but I've noticed some other programs cannot. Anyway... thanks again for continuing to keep this program up to date. FairMount is an alright program but it hangs for all eternity on new DVD releases because FairMount is outdated. This program works flawlessly. (Version 1.2.5)

SJK You can also disable the "Use .dvdmedia Extension". And some apps accept drag/drop of the .dvdmedia packages RipIt creates. (Version 1.2.5)

ST00P!D M0NK3Y Yeah, I drag and drop the .dvdmedia files directly into Toast in Toast's VIDEO_TS burning option. Works like a charm. =) (Version 1.2.5)

TAIPAN2008 I am not a techno geek and I tried to backup my sons DVD collection (legally owned) for so long
all application I tried (freeware and not, Mac and windows) were quite cumbersome, at least to me. RipIt is so easy that is not even funny
after three days of trial I bought it and its probably the best app I own. In order to recompress and burn I use it along with DVDremaster Pro or Toast 7 (Version 1.2.3)

EASER What's the size of the file you ripped? What's the capacity of the DVD you're burning it to? I've found that I typically need to also use DVD2one in order to shrink the ripped file to a burnable size. (There are other programs besides DVD2one; that's just the one I use. I'm not attempting to promote.) This is not a limitation of RipIt. Even Mac the Ripper didn't shrink the files. And if you read the RipIt promotional information, it only ever suggests you can rip DVDs in order to view them on your hard drive (such as with DVD Player). That's its intended, stated purpose; so I don't think they're trying to be deceptive about anything. I've found them to be very responsive and straightforward. The end result is that you may need to acquire additional software to accomplish your objectives. (Version 1.2.5)

DEMORAY In a previous review I gave RipIt five stars. I still use and love RipIt, as it has ripped many DVDs that other ripping apps couldn't manage. RipIt's decryption capabilities are the best I've come across for the Mac. However in recent weeks I've experienced a rather serious problem with RipIt that I've seen mentioned by others users. RipIt will report a rip as being completed successfully, even when the rip is actually defective. It's one thing for rip software to fail a rip, they all do it occasionally. It's another thing entirely for rip software to fail a rip and yet report it as successful. In my case this problem has only occurred two times in about forty rips. Not bad odds. Yet the serious nature of this flaw means I now need to check each ripped file to make certain that it's a one-for-one copy of the original. This issue needs to be addressed by the developers ASAP. COLOSSUS9 I sent an email a few weeks back and never received a response. The developer was quick to respond (here) on the latest update. I have a feeling this is going to be abandoned, due to the lack of updates. =( (Version 1.2.12)
