DEBRYC I have installed the latest version of Glims (1.0b18) but the dated download folders feature is not working. Please advise. How can I troubleshoot this. Other features such as cmd+z to reopen a tab do work. (Version 1.0b18)

SIR GADABOUT Keywords are now working again! Fantastic, now I can ditch PlugSuit and Keywurl (which, despite the update for Safari 4 Final, I never got to work…). Great! (OS X 10.5.7, Safari 4.0.1) (Version 1.0b18)

STEVEN GOODHEART If you mean one can no longer choose the Search Engine you specified in the Glims Search Engine preferences, yes, I have the same problem too. By the way, I found with this version of Glims that Safari uses whatever is at the top of the Glims search engine list -- found that out after moving Wikipedia to the top of the Glims search list, and then quitting Safari. When I came back, all the searches I did in Safari's toolbar were all for Wikipedia..the only way I could change it back to Google was to move Google search back to the top of the Glims search list, and then restart. I hope this gets fixed soon -- and that it's fixable. It's great being able to specify the search engine one wants to use. (Version 1.0b17)

GIOVANNI LANZANI Well, if that also doesn't work, it's something else from what I'm experiencing. What I mean is when you type keyword (google, or wikipedia or whatever) + string to search in the address bar, as a shortcut to search in google wikipedia or whatever. (Version 1.0b17)
| Jun 10 2009 |
STEVEN GOODHEART Yes, that also doesn't work for me.....I sent a message to the Glim team about all of this, and they are working on it....no time frame yet for a fix...apparently, it's non-trivial.....interestingly, I am finding that Inquisitor works just fine with the final release.

RBUGAJEWSKI If you use Keywurl in addition to Glims, keyword search will work again - even with Safari 4 Final. (Version 1.0b18)

ASMEURER This seems to have fixed the issue where it would not reload my tabs unless I opened a link from another application. My only complaint now regards search shortcut keys. I would like it if they could be activated anywhere, not just when you are in the search box. Also, when changing the search site when text is in the box, I would like it if it just changed the site and didn't open a search in a new window. (This is similar to how Acid Search worked back when it worked). That way, if I start typing a search and realize it is in the wrong engine, I don't have to cut the search, change the engine, and paste it back in just to get it in that tab. Also, this doesn't really matter, but technically, the options in New Tabs should be a group of radio buttons that are disabled by a checkbox. See http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/XHIGControls/XHIGControls.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000359-SW4 Keep up the good work! (Version 1.0b17)

ASMEURER This latest release has a strange bug in it. If your keyboard shortcut includes the option key, it downloads the page instead of loading it. It is probably catching the option key as being held down when it loads the page, which defaults to downloading the page. (Version 1.0b18)

TOMJOECZAK I've noticed that the "Glims Installed Successfully" tab opens ever time I start up Safari 4 Beta (Build 4528.17). I appreciated the reminder the first time. Now, it's just annoying. Great piece of software, though. (Version 1.0b17)

MACHANGOUT Are you sure it is not just the reopening of the tabs leaving it there? Please report a bug on our site so we can look into it together. (btw thousands of downloads and no other reports about it) (Version 1.0b17)

DANA SUTTON When you launch the installer on this version, you get a screen which says, in part, "When you use our plugin and click on an Amazon or eBay result that we formatted, you support our project. Amazon and eBay gives us a small percentage in referral fees on all qualifying revenue made through their links. Please note that this only happens on our formatted links. Other websites or links are not reformatted. Also your privacy is protected through Amazon's privacy policy. In other words what happens on Amazon stays in Amazon." I'm not so sure I care for this. What exactly is "an Amazon or eBay link that we formatted?" How can I tell when I'm looking at one? For some time, I have been using Glims, but having read this I de-installed the version I've been running, and I'm certainly not going to install this one. (Version 1.0b17)

MISHA This just means that they modify the link to include their affiliate tracking ID. Nothing else is affected -- the link still points you to where you wanted to go, it's just that the Glims team will earn a small % if you buy the item. Totally harmless, I assure you. It's just a way for them to earn a bit of money for their efforts on the free software. (Version 1.0b17)
| Jun 1 2009 |
DANA SUTTON Sorry, I hear you but I still don't buy it. I think it's that I don't like the idea of the technology they're using, even if they are using it for a completely benign purpose. Dammit, I don't want the links I click on to be altered in any way. Even if what they do is quite okay and understandable, the next guy to use the same link-modification might do it for a much more sinister purpose, and i. m. h. o. it ought to be against the law If they simply asked me for a few bucks, I'd happily pay to use it, it's a good product. Or, if they insist on making their money this way, I think it would be more ethical for them to include some sort of opt-out choice, so that people share my view could continue to use GLIMS in a totally worry-free way. (Version 1.0b17)
| Jun 1 2009 |
MISHA I understand your point... although gor all you know, other Safari enhancers you've used in the past were hijacking your links and just not disclosing it (obviously you never noticed Glims was doing this until you read the Read Me)... you never know. I think the Glims guys are pretty stand-up folks, actively developing the best Safari enhancer and always keeping it free. I guess the middle ground would be for them to charge $10 for a version that doesn't do that. (Version 1.0b17)
| Jun 1 2009 |
DANA SUTTON Thanks, Misha. I want to be absolutely clear about what I'm saying. I have absoluteliy nothing against Glims or MacHangout, its developer, and I admire their up-front honesty about what they're doing. My objection is, in a nutshell, that a technology that allows third parties to alter the links I click on, in the wrong hands, seems to have the potential of being employed as a new kind of Trojan Horse. I believe I have the right to experct that the links I click on to function precisely as intended by the site developer. (Version 1.0b17)
| Jun 5 2009 |
I think you're only partly clear on what Glims is doing, regarding this "redirection" of links. It's not a redirection as such, and it's done in collaboration between the Glims authors, and Amazon, etc., so those links ARE working just as the site owners intend. But I do agree with you, that the Glims authors possibly should include an option in Glims to allow you to turn off this feature, for people with personal concerns like yours. (Version 1.0b17)

SNOWWHITESICKETTE Unlike the earlier commenter, I'm not worried about Glims being malware, but its auto-affiliation feature caused me to uninstall too. I belong to some loyalty rewards programs that put money into a college savings account or give other rewards on purchases made through certain links from the websites. AFAIK, only one affiliate can receive the commission. I uninstalled Glims to be on the safe side, because putting every penny I can into my child's college fund is very important to me. I like Glims, especially the way it reloads my last session in a snap. Safari is very slow at reloading without Glims. If the developer is reading, I'd be very happy to pay for a version of Glims that does not insert your affiliate ID, as Misha suggests above. Glims is certainly worth paying for, and I hope you consider Misha's idea. Thank you for your time. (Version 1.0b18)

PATRIZIAF After I downloaded and installed the new version 1.0b17 on Leopard 10.5.7 Intel, I have problems with the Apple support pages when I try to open them with Safari 3.2.3 (no problem after uninstall of Glims and no problem with Firefox). does not allow request data with GET requests, or the amount of data provided in the request exceeds the capacity limit. I reinstalled the previous version (1.0b16) and I don't have problems with it (except with the search suggestions, one of the things you fixed with 1.0b17). I sent you the links that you requested.

TSEHOV FRANKNS mentioned earlier the annoying pop-up behavior of this app which I totally agree, luckily I have version 1.0 b14 (the version that can handle pop-ups properly). So, I certainly will not update before the issue is fixed. (Version 1.0b16)

MACHANGOUT in b16 there is no more resizing issues. We added a 'new tab' preference panel which is pretty cool if you ask me. If you have any other issue please let me know. We work hard to make this good. (Version 1.0b16)
