DESCRIPTION
iconXprit is a background service program for OSX 10.6 Finder. With three sorts of add-ons - image, color and text - which can be added as layers and removed separately, iconXprit makes it easy to explicate desktop items (such as folders) as well as to bring individual flavors. The editor panel contains various tools to edit composite images in details (e.g. resize, relocate, transform, apply several effects, add text, clip & multiple images). Edit-settings can be saved as templates accessible from the service menu. The panel also provides a possibility to organize favorites or to keep items whose icons are frequently modified. You can define group colors to use repeatedly but also can attach any color freely. Strings added via the text panel are Spotlight-compatible and editable when you reopen the panel. Enjoy!
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.0.1:
  • The menu item "All" under "List Items with" of the status menu opens a window where all the colored items are listed according to color groups.
  • The function of attaching a custom icon with a template uses the selected item's image contents, if it has no custom icon but image data.
  • Internal adjustments mostly relating to menu handling.

MIGUEL  I've been waiting for such utility for a long time, since it's a must-have for any icon lover. Back in the day (classic Mac OS) we used to have the app "Icon Tools" by Riccisoft, which let users apply an icon stamp to a folder easily via right click. Ever since OSX, such utilities have been scarce. Enter Iconxprit. This app has many features and potential to grow. However I found several issues. My main use of applying a stamp to a plain folder was frustrating and unintuitive. Furthermore the interfaces are awkward especially the editor. Outline of issues follows:

• Editor is horrible. The GUI looks like old C code. Manipulation of sizing, position and importing of base icon and stamp icon is hard.

• Redo doesn't work (undo works)

• GUI controls in editor are too small, less than 16x16.

• Not intuitive: user should be able to right-click a plain folder, select icon stamp, and the result should be folder + icon stamp. Iconxprit does the opposite, it pastes the folder into the stamp. Awkward design.

• The main menu can't be dragged, it's fixed nonstandard UI.

• Adding text via the "Add text..." menu has a horrible UI. As you type, you can't drag to reposition text. It has a nonstandard UI controls such as the close button and apply button which can be confusing to first time users.

This utility has potential to become much better, but it will need a GUI revamp to expose all the functionality in a user-friendly package.

APMATARASSO  Great response - one day after Snow Leopard the developer supplies compatibility. A can't do without application.

ROD76  I truly enjoy this application, it really makes my media files stand out. I guess you really don't know just how much you use something until its not there when you right click.

I'm really grateful to the developer for getting a Snow Leopard compatible version out on the day of release. I already found myself missing it several times today and am glad to have it back again.

DEMORAY  IconXprit is a feature-rich, contextual-menu-based icon tool. I've been quite surprised to discover the many things it can do. The more I use it, the more potential I realize it has.

Previously I'd been using several other icon apps to do what iconXprit can do on it's own.

You can tell it was designed by someone who uses icon manipulation tools. It does everything I hoped it would do, and then some.

The name iconXprit is questionable, but other than that it's a great icon tool. : )

TROLLIN  Hi, DEMORAY. iconXprit is somehow a compound of

icon + OSX + explicit + express + esprit

whose intermediate part is condensed to X, and

for which a google-search returned no hit at the time of creation.

Hope this explanation makes sense to you.

Thank you all those who gave encouraging words!

MEANDERING  There are often many aspects to consider when 'auditioning' software whether small useful little utilities or larger more complex systemic mammoths. Software guides our behavior, either facilitating our own predilections or demanding we submit to a less intuitive methodology. One generally habituates, though sometimes after much hair pulling and cursing.

A less obvious aspect of good software is the the developer or development team. When glitches or difficulties or simple queries present themselves it makes an enormous difference if a developer is responsive and open to being helpful. This is the case here. Trollin is quick to respond, friendly and accommodating. There is much to be said of the value this brings to one's experience of software.

Some software authors (even here on MacUpdate) can be less than empathetic and, worse, non-communicative. As my experience continues to be so positive with this one, I figure it deserves to be recognized.

Thanks

TROLLIN  Hello MEANDERING,

Thank you for your comment. Glad to read that I could contribute to reducing your irritation.

It is my pleasure to be able to help users of my programs - certainly I would have much less motivation for development if I were the only one user :-) Trollin

NICKSLOAN  For those who much prefer classic labels to the garish X versions, and have been waiting interminably for Unsanity to update Labels X, iconXprit could be the answer. It can colorize icons from a custom list or any free colour via a contextual menu.

In fact, though it takes a bit more setting up, iconXprit exceeds the capabilities of Labels X in several important respects: colours can be mapped to keyboard shortcuts, there is no seven colour limit, and you can still use Finder labels alongside icon colours (for those occasions when an in-your-face banner is what you really want).

And colorizing icons is only a part of what iconXprit can do: it can also apply text, copy and paste custom icons, apply from an archive, and more.

Early versions were a bit buggy, but the current version seems stable enough for me (G5, Leopard)—and it does not use APE.

TOM.25  I'm a long time user of iconCompo, and I did localize it in French when the original translator stopped to localize future version. I localized iconXprit in French as soon as Trollin sent me a beta version for test. It works very well and do what I want it to do.

Thank you Trollin, and merry Christmas to all of you :-) .

Does Folders-Full Set allow to edit icon?

TROLLIN  Thank you very much, TOM.25!

It is really encouraging for me to have earnest users and supporters like you.

'Folders-Full Set' is a set of icons (not an app/plugin), some of which can be used to combine by means of iconXprit as well :-) . As far as I see, they may unfortunately look not so nice in full-size under OSX 10.5 (with Cover Flow or Quick Look) due to lack of 256x256 or 512x512 representation.

Wishing you all the best, Trollin

REDNAIL  Great little app. With Folder Icon X doing nothing to come up with a Universal Binary version I've switched to iconXprit with no regrets.

Only issue is the help text masks the interface too much. Make it so you can switch tips off and the app will be just about perfect.

TROLLIN  Hello SEAN6,

Glad to know that you are pleased with iconXprit.

Sorry that I have not read your comment long before.

As to tooltips, though you may have noticed by now, there is an option to switch them off (at least in the icon preview area). Click the small menu icon at the top-left corner of the preview image and deselect the menu item "Show tooltips". Hope this reduces some annoyance.
