Dialectic uses a Bluetooth mobile phone (including the iPhone), your Mac’s modem, or speakers to dial the phone. Dialectic can also make calls via Vonage, CallVantage, Skype, Ovolab Phlink, Parliant’s PhoneValet, Fritz!Box, an Asterisk PBX server, IP-based telephony devices including IP phones from Cisco and Snom, softphones from CounterPath Solutions, Inc., the Gizmo Project, ohphoneX, JackenIAX, as well as others.

You can enter a number manually or you can use the integrated search tools to find numbers in your Address Book, Microsoft Entourage, Now Contact, or Palm Desktop databases. RYBU03051  Dialectic is a feature rich app with the ability to make calls using just about every method on the planet. I did have a delayed response from the developer with one issue but they provided a reasonable explanation and solved the problem. I would recommend Dialectic.

DANA SUTTON  Let me add something else. Both Dialectic and Phone Valet add relevant items to the often-neglected Services menu. Since it is very easy to assign keyboard commands for such items, it's a snap to set up a system where they dial a highlighted number, or one stored on the clipboard, by such a command (go System Preferences > Keyboards/Mouse > Keyboard shortcuts, hit +, in this case keep All Applicaitons, type in the exact name of menu item, assign a keyboard command combo not used in any applicaiton you run). Try it, it's sweet.

DANA SUTTON  You use Address Book to store your phone numbers, right? So doesn't it make sense to use Address Book to dial them as well? And you use your Mac as a communications center in so many other ways that it would probably make sense to use it as a center for yoiur telephony as well, no? You have two ways to go, which aren't necessarily mutually exclusive: use Dialectic as a dialer, or use Phone Valet turn your Mac into a dialer/answering machine. Both access Address Book. Both add a Services item which can be assigned a keyboard equivalent, and both add a Contextual Menu item, so they are extremely handy. Dialectic is especially useful for road warriors' laptops, whereas Phone Valet is relevant to desktops (but if you are using it with multiple Macs on a LAN you will want Dialectic to enhance the power of the satellite program they give you to run on other networked machines). It's strange that Apple, which pioneered the Smart Telephone, is otherwise so indifferent to telephony and doesn't include any telephone-relevant capability in the OS package. These two programs make up for this omission.

DONEBYLEE  I want to second the reports of excellent customer service. When I first tried this app it wouldn't work with my LG phone. Jon, the developer, was very responsive and helpful and got me up and working within an hour or so.

I have since purchased a license and would recommend this app and developer to anyone.

JFIELDS  It's Jon's Phone Tool reborn with a cleaner interface and more settings than ever. I use this to dial numbers directly from a Filemaker Pro Database to a PhoneValet setup on a networked machine. Works great!
