DESCRIPTION
Plex bridges the gap between your Mac and your home theater, doing so with a visually appealing user interface that provides instant access to your media. Plex can play a wide range of video, audio and photo formats as well as online streaming audio and video. The real power of Plex is found in its library features: Organize your media into versatile libraries, automatically retrieve metadata from the Internet, and display your libraries using one of the visually stunning skins.

Organize all of your media, from local drives, network shares, optical media and the Internet, in one easy to use application. Plex supports a wide range of video, audio and image formats without having to install any additional third party plug-ins or programs. Plex will make the days of trying to find the right plug-in to work with the right application a thing of the past.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 0.8.3:
  • FIX: On Snow Leopard, 5.1 audio had issues. We've cleaned up the code, fixed the problems, and it now runs great on 10.6. Many thanks to Ryan for all his work on this one.
  • FIX: We fixed an issue with the new caching system that could cause some MKVs and other files to stutter when played over the network.
  • FIX: Video playlists work again.
  • FIX: Multi-part videos display thumbnails again.
  • FIX: Crash reading GPS EXIF data from photos.
  • FIX: Fix for crash when displaying subtitles (Thanks, Billy J!)
  • FIX: A few crashes in the Media Server (custom iTunes genre artwork, and playing Netflix movies).
  • FIX: First WebKit play on a fresh install didn't work.
  • FIX: App Store would sometimes not show up on a fresh install.
  • FIX: GForce visualizer for iTunes causes Plex to crash.
  • FIX: TVDB image issue (thanks to Poldi!)
  • FIX: Posters issue in IMDB scraper (thanks, Jay!) and issue with cast lists (thanks to Todd G!)
  • FIX: DTS downmixing method reverted to use libdts. People who listen on headphone *may* be happier.
  • FIX: Make keyboard backlight feature optional (James). You can access this setting in the advanced Cocoa preferences area under the Videos tab.
  • NEW: James revamped the Plex shutdown options, adding a beautiful UI that allows quitting, sleeping, or powering off after a specified time. Check out the screencast below to see it in action. Press 's' anywhere in Plex to go directly to the Quit menu. On the Quit menu, press 'c' on the keyboard or hold the Play button on the Apple Remote to bring up the quit timer. There are also options to Sleep and Shutdown in the Quit submenu. Press 'c' or hold Play on the apple remote with Sleep or Shutdown selected brings up the timers for both of those as well.
  • NEW: One of the longest-running complaints about Plex has been the low volume when listening to downmixed 5.1 audio. We've added three levels of dynamic range compression (in Preferences > System > Audio): Normal, Large, and Huge. These settings apply only to AC3 and DTS downmixed audio, and the Large and Huge settings can introduce (usually subliminal) clipping. This one is for you, Aayush!
  • NEW: Captions for iPhoto photos, and EXIF comment tag also used for captions.
  • NEW: We're using Felix's new Apple Remote code (thanks to Evan for integrating it!). This provides, as Apple would say "improved compatibility". One note: we recommend using the Candelair driver even on Leopard, because it can help resolve cases in which the Apple Remote loses exclusive access with the Apple driver.
  • NEW: Toggle full screen option on dock menu (thanks to Billy Joe).
  • NEW: Support for one-click install of plug-ins. You can now easily install plug-ins off the web without having to copy files all over the place.
  • NEW: Support for auto-refresh in directories.
  • NEW: Context menus in plug-ins.
  • NEW: The ability for the HTTP cache to auto-update itself.
  • NEW: Rating support for plug-ins, with support for community/system ratings as well as user ratings. This feature was used to great effect by David B in the upcoming update of our Netflix plug-in. Here's an unrated movie and us rating it via the context menu item.
  • NEW: Upgrade Plex WebKit libraries to 4.0.3.
  • NEW: Allow passing back User Agent (makes Apple Movie Trailers work again).

STORMCHILD  Still crashes on quit. It has done this from day one, through all of the updates, and every OS version I've tried it on. I've deleted the preferences and started with a fresh install several times, to no avail.

You'd think eventually the developer would be able to resolve this issue, but apparently not.

The Candelair remote driver helps restore the functionality of the Apple Remote, but even with that installed, I find the remote support very flaky in Plex. The Menu button often fails to go back; I end up getting stuck in some areas, and have to walk over to the keyboard to press the Esc key, which is rather annoying and pretty much defeats the whole purpose of having a remote. At one point the remote just stopped working at all. I went to quit/relaunch Plex to see if it would resolve the issue, when I discovered it's still crashing on quit (like it was when I stopped using it months ago), and here we are.

KEN1701  USER "GREGMLR" Writes "What is a could-be awesome Front Row replacement is too difficult to get up and running. When using the Apple remote with Plex there are two major issues:

1) Navigating up and down through the main menu turns your system volume up and down as well

2) Hitting the "Menu" button to go back (like you do in Front Row) launches Front Row on top of Plex...... Ect.

Information to all users that are using the 10.6 Snow Leopard OS with Plex 8.2 and Lower,

Plex was not coded for Snow Leopard from version 8.2 -8.1 and lower.

The New Plex Update 8.3 is Fully Snow Leopard Compatible and the "Remote Control" issues are Addressed.

Directly to User User "GREGML" the Remote Control Issues that you hare experiencing have been due to Apple Changing the Remote Control API to a newer version, All Application that use the Remote control "Such as VMC,XBMC ect.." other then Apples own Applications had this Problem, Plex was not the Problem and was not to blame for the Issues. This Problem was All Over the Plex Forums and was Addressed, Please Next time got to the Forums to find out a cause then just blaming a piece of software as the sole problem of the event

Apple had admitted it was a bug and has issued a fix to be included with the "Snow Leopard 10.6.2 update" to be released in a few day.

Since Apple has not released a fix with Snow Leopard 10.6.1 update for the remote control problem Plex has included a fix in the New 8.3 update to Address Apples Problem with the help of Remote Buddy Author.

Check it out Here. http://elan.plexapp.com/2009/10/23/snow-leopard-thaws-to-the-apple-remote-thanks-to-remote-buddy-author/

So No, Plex was not at Fault for the Remote control issues, it was Apple and a Brand New Release of Snow Leopard That has Caused Allot of Issues, You had indeed pointed the Finger at the Wrong Company.

Plex 8.3 Has the Remote control fix, But it also should be included by Apple with the Next 10.6.2 Update in a Few Day's

Give it a try, And as we all are aware a New OS can always cause Problems, as Plex and others have said from the Start. if you Use Plex with Leopard 10.5.8 stick with it and wait till Apple fixes the Snow Leopard Issues, But Plex has went a step Further and has fixed Apple's Remote Problem For Them...

Thats Dedication and Allot of Hard work for a "FREE Piece Of Software" very Helpful Developers of Plex Would You Not Say . ;-)

I See Nothing to Complain About at All.

GREGMLR  What is a could-be awesome Front Row replacement is too difficult to get up and running. When using the Apple remote with Plex there are two major issues:

1) Navigating up and down through the main menu turns your system volume up and down as well

2) Hitting the "Menu" button to go back (like you do in Front Row) launches Front Row on top of Plex

Changing the setting for Plex to run on top of other applications does no good.

Done a Google search and found no solution.

Sad, as this could be an awesome solution for users looking for something more feature-rich than Front Row.

MTCOBRA  Aware there was an update to Plex, I opened the older version and was promptly advised that there was a newer version, and did I want to download/install it? Options presented were NO and YES. Neither button was responsive. I had to QUIT the older version and download 0.8.2 from the MacUpdate site. Not a problem, but it was curious that the update option within the program wasn't functioning.
