Outspring Mail... Imagine an email program that was smart enough to observe and learn how you handle your email. Like offering to reply to certain types of email messages using a response you've previously sent. Or giving you the option to auto-file a message you've read based on how you've filed similar messages in the past. What if you could defer a message from your inbox for a few days or weeks, so that it magically reappears later when you're ready to deal with it? What if this program had an amazing junk mail filter that would leave your inbox devoid of spam? And what if this program was as familiar and easy to use as Apple Mail?
Outspring Mail ushers in an entirely new category of software to the Macintosh: adaptive intelligent software. By using advanced database analysis and Bayesian logic, the program is able to ascertain patterns in the way you reply to and file your mail and make suggestions to assist you with your communications. Think about it... if you frequently reply to an email message that says, "How do I get to your office?" or words to that effect; shouldn't your email program be smart enough to know that you've replied to this same type of message before? And shouldn't it then offer to use one of these replies for the current message? The program also offers a similar technique for filing messages. Once the program has gone through a short learning process of observing your mail filing habits and cross-referencing message content, it will begin to suggest appropriate folders or mailboxes to file messages. Instead of dragging messages to folder icons, you'll be presented with one or more likely destination buttons that will automatically file your mail in an appropriate location.
Version 1.0.6:
New Features:
- Eudora Import feature, which will import accounts, messages and address books from Eudora 6.2.x.
- Template feature. Templates allow you to use predefined text while composing a message or a quick reply. Templates also support embedded graphics and tokens like sender's information, date, subject and more).
- White List and Black List feature. A new Whitelist Sender and Blacklist Sender menu options are now located under the Message menu. If you have a sender who is continually having their messages placed in your Junk folder, you can white list their email address. This will prevent the Junk filter from processing their messages and they'll remain in your inbox regardless of the content of their message. Please note: a special interface will soon be available in an update that will allow you to manage your address database. The inverse of that feature is the Black List feature. Any future email sent by someone who is Black Listed will go straight to the Junk folder.
- Quick Reply. You can quickly reply to a message by pressing command-return.
- Message Redirection. You can redirect one or multiple message to another email address.
- Edit as new. You can open any message into a new message compose window.
- IMAP Idle. New messages notifications are pushed to OSM when supported by the IMAP server.
- The Dock icon now shows the total number of unread messages in the user's inboxes.
Enhancements:
- State of the Search menu is now saved and restored.
- Deferment now supports "Defer until date..."
- Delete Immediately can be triggered by clicking on the Delete toolbar button while holding down the option/alternate key.
- Signatures can now be reordered using drag & drop in the Preferences.
- Improved performance when switching mailboxes.
- Improved performance when moving messages between mailboxes (when IMAP server support IMAP UID Plus).
- Improved performance when marking a batch of messages a read or unread.
- Messages imported from a QuickMail "Sent Mail" folder are now stored in a folder called "QuickMail Sent Mail" within Outspring Mail.
- Improved handling of attachments in draft messages.
- Message edit window now accepts drag & drop and copy/paste of list of addresses are separated by tabs or linefeeds/returns when composing a message.
- And many more minor improvements...

BLLOYD Well... it looks interesting. I have a couple IMAP/SSL accounts, and Outspring took a minute or two to configure (it defaulted to non-SSL, and one of the IMAP accounts is SSL only). But then I got it working and it has a number of ways of tweaking the UI that are different and useful. It's "brain" was also interesting... a number of my messages it suggested places to file them (3 of 4 were correct), and on a few messages it suggested replies (one was appropriate, the other no so much -- a message where my wife gave a suggested list of people to email a birth announcement to, it suggested an auto-reply of "thanks, heading out for a bike ride I'll be back by 7 can you take the dog out when you get home?" would have gotten me in REALLY hot water. But... I got a good laugh at least. The brain probably needs a little more time to adjust... and to develop some coping mechanisms for the female half of or species :-) So that said, right now using Mail in combination with MailTags and Mail Act-On can do most of the stuff that Outspring Mail can do, though it's more manual. This does seem interesting, though, and with some further refinement maybe could be worth continuing to montitor. As for the price... tricky subject. I wouldn't pay $95 for the product as-is. Still, if it really saves productivity down the line that's not so much $, given MailTags + MAO is around $50. The UI is okay... I really prefer the buttons to Mail's, though the folders ain't got no alibi. It *is* nice to be able to customize which IMAP folders can and cannot be seen, and the preview mode is novel but I'd need to spend more time adjusting it for it to be useful. I'd give it a 4/5 on promise and maybe a 3/5 for where it is right now in the scope of things... price not being considered. (Version 1.0.5)

SWAMIJIM It has great promise. I'm not commonly an early adopter, but I like what I see of this mail software and in the short time I've been using it the updates have added dimension to it. Give it a try. (Version 1.0.4)

MINER I agree that in the current state the product is expensive. That said, I am still looking for a strong IMAP e-mail client, Thunderbird or Apple Mail don't fit it yet. PowerMail would be great, but that has no IMAP to speak of. Outspring is fast, clever (that brain works), and has a nice and ambitious plan ahead. It is my daily mailer right now, and whenever there is a quirk, their response it timely, to the point, and helpful. I think the product will be great, and I made the switch now to be there. PROGRAMHAPPY Just plain bad. For a product that has been delayed repeatedly for over 2 years, it's the disappointment of the new century. (Version 1.0.3)

HELIOS9 Sorry to be redundant, but at $95 Outspring is horribly overpriced. The developer has, as of 6th April '08 a special introductory price of $59 but, imo, it's still too much. I tried it out but could find no good reason to use this email client. What's wrong with Outspring has been pretty well covered, below, in a previous review. For some reason, I could not send any emails from one of my accounts; I kept getting a message telling me that Outspring couldn't connect with the smtp server...something about failure to authenticate. I double checked all my account info but could find no errors. I thought, perhaps, that the port setting might be wrong but could find no info regarding that nor, of course, any way of changing it. Apple's mail client works pretty well but if you're looking for a reasonably priced, well designed and totally dependable client, take a look a Gyazmail; it's only $18 and works beautifully. I'm totally pleased with it....and so are many others. (Version 1.0.2)
