DESCRIPTION
Fairmount is a free open-source companion to the VideoLAN Client to make encrypted DVDs readable by any application.

Fairmount is a free tool which allows on-the-fly decryption of DVD content for convenient access. Fairmount does not perform the actual decryption, it simply forwards the data to VLC Media Player, which is used for the decryption. Hence, VLC Media Player must be installed for Fairmount to work.

WHAT'S NEW

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Does exactly what it says. I'm using this instead of MacTheRipper now... which doesn't work on very many new releases these days (including version 3 of MacTheRipper... which is buggy). Excellent program. :]

FARDILHA  Fairmount as one and only one purpose, but it does it really well.

Thank you for this great gem.

ANONYMOUS  A JEWEL !

Do not click on Macupdate's "download now" link. Instead of downloading, it starts reading the complete source of the .dmg, thus forcing you to quit Macupdate

Do not try neither to use the mouse's right button for a "download link target", because it will fail looking for an unexpected https linking

The only way I found to download FairMount was using a download manager after copying macupdate's "download now" link.

The name of the app (Fairmount) is also confusing, because the download link refers to "DVDRemaster" instead of "Fairmount". Actually both apps are downloaded together, as fairmount will use DVDRemaster in the background.

After all these irritating download procedures, the simpleness and efficiency of Fairmount is magic. In less than 5 seconds, Fairmount replaces the original DVD with another volume where a perfectly uncrypted copy of the film is available. Then, it can be used for anything (copying to HD, size reduction with a specific software, burning this copy if a second DVD peripheral is connected).

A remarkable gain in time and convenience.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  Just checked the download link here at MU from my location on the Pacific coast of Mexico using a MBP running 10.5.7 using Safari 4.0.2 (5530.19) and it worked fine.

TICE  Great little app. Works fine and silent. Only with the SonyBMG protection it doesn't seem to work. Shows 0 bad sectors, but the DVD spins forever. Anyway for all others it works fine (so I can have a copy of my DVDs in my summer house. Thanks!

BUCHO  I'm just wondering what version of VLC you have installed (as Fairmount depends on VLC to do the actual decrypting)?

R33C3  The newest version...

Vlc even had problems playing Bolt at one stage for me... And I do recall it being a beta... but I'm not sure. Anyway, MacDVDRipper Pro seams to do the same job for $10. If anyone has any troubles, go for that.

Cheers,

Reece

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Wow it's been like two years since there's been a FairMount update... I've since switched to RipIt. Maybe I'll give this a go one more time and see how it works with newer DVDs. I'm absolutely hating the new icon though... so much that I copy and pasted the old one over this one.

ZERROEFFECT  In the FAQ on the main site:

The reason why DVDRemaster is downloaded when downloading Fairmount is that the latter is distributed with the DVDRemaster package.
