DESCRIPTION
BirthdayScannerX is a powerful tool to synchronize birthdays and other anniversaries between your Address Book and iCal (or other calendar programs).

iCal will remind you of all upcoming birthdays in time.

With BirthdayScanner X, you can:

  • Create events in iCal for all anniversaries (not only birthdays) in your Address Book
  • Save the anniversaries as a standard calendar file. Import them to any calendar program - Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Sunbird, Google calendar etc.
  • Bring the anniversaries to your iPhone - without a special iPhone application: just by syncing normally with your Mac.
  • Add reminders to the anniversary events
  • Customize the event text (now optimized to look good on the iPhone too)
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.4.3:
  • Dutch localization added - many thanks to Eric van der Veldt for his work.
  • In the event title settings, added “Birthyear” placeholder to show the birth year of the jubilee.
  • Fixed issue which caused middle names not showing properly (e.g. dutch "tussenvoegsel" - "van", "van der" etc.)
  • Fixed issue which caused events added to the Notes field of an Address Book contact to be parsed incorrectly.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

SJK  Not sure why I'd previously ignored BSX but finally gave it a try after noticing the latest update and being impressed with the thorough documentation on the developer site.

First-time usage was flawless, operating without iCal or Address Book running. Event template is handy and the symbols are a nice touch. Conveniently supports up to three alarms. Haven't tried updating any existing entries but may never want to.

Even if BSX could have other features nothing obvious is overlooked for my purposes. Fully satisfied with it as-is since it did/does everything I want, plus a bit more. Definitely deserves a donation when I have the budget. Well done!

THOMAS  Thank you!

Updating events should also not be a problem, should you ever want to do it. The program takes great care to update correctly.

IMHO  Found this software recently and am lucky with this. This is just what I wanted for a lot of time. Offers functions that iCal should have offered itself. Thank you very much, developer, for this stuff. It works completely fine for me. Mac OS X 10.5.7, iMac PowerPC.

ANONYMOUS  Hi,

I was surprised that MacUpdate had updated the product page, because I had not submitted the information about the new version yet. I guess they got it somehow from CNet. I will update the product page.

To answer your question:

The BirthdayScanner X does:

- add up to 3 customized Alarms to the Birthday Event

- also creates iCal Events for other Dates, like Anniversaries

- the resulting Calendar is a normal calendar, not write protected, so you can modify it to your hearts content

- the Events show the Age of the person

- Finally, you can also just export an ICS file, that way you can import your Address Book birthdays into any other calendar apps, even if not on Mac.

Cheers, Thomas

ENDORPHINITY  What is the point of this utility if Leopard's iCal itself includes 'Show Birthdays calendar' option in preferences? Would be useful, if the author have stressed this app's peculiarity and what makes it different.

DONEBYLEE  The most obvious from looking at the screen capture would be the ability to set alerts for birthdays, something that Leopard does not let you do.
