DESCRIPTION

BirthdayScanner X...Tired of forgetting birthdays and anniversaries?

Tired of stressful last-minute-present hunts?

If these problems are not yours, you are well organized and have my sincere respect. For the rest of us, there is this little program:

Birthday Scanner X synchronizes birthdays, anniversaries and other dates between Address Book and iCal.

How does it work?

  • 1) You maintain birthdays and other dates in the Address Book.
  • 2) BirthdayScanner X imports these dates into iCal.
  • 3) iCal alerts you on time to buy presents and to congratulate.

Features:

  • Each birthday gets up to three customizable alarms.
  • The events in iCal show the AGE of the person. Something very valuable, because lets face it, a 40 requires some more thinking than, lets say, a 37
  • BirthdayScanner X lets you choose whose birthdays you want to remember.
  • BirthdayScanner X does not only create birthday events, but also events for any other dates you maintain in the Address Book (anniversaries, name’s days...)
  • The generated calendar is not write protected. So you can modify it at your hearts content.
  • BirthdayScanner X also lets you save the birthdays as a standard calendar file (ics file) which can be imported into other calendar applications - MS Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Google Calendar...
  • Supported Languages: English, German, Spanish

Why do you need such a program if you have the Birthday Calender inbuilt into iCal?

The inbuilt Birthday Calendar is readonly, only creates Birthday events without alarms, completely omits anniversaries and other dates, and does not help you at all if you want to get those birthdays into other calendar applications...

This program is Freeware. Enjoy.

WHAT'S NEW

2.2.2:

  • Fixed a bug which would cause BirthdayScanner X to crash when importing contacts which were marked as company but had no company name.
  • Fixed a bug which caused imported events in rare cases to be off (minus) several days.

New Features:

  • the feature to include the age in the event title is now optional.
  • the "creation mark" ("created by zencat BirthdayScanner...") is now optional.

Version 2.2

Maintenance release. Improved general stability.

Version 2.2

Fixes:

  • double imports into iCal, "multiplying" birthday events
  • german localization issues
  • many more small issues

New Features:

  • Age now is displayed in the Reminders
  • BirthdayScanner now remembers the last settings.
  • added spanish translation

IMHO  Found this software recently and am lucky with this. This is just what I wanted for a lot of time. Offers functions that iCal should have offered itself. Thank you very much, developer, for this stuff. It works completely fine for me. Mac OS X 10.5.7, iMac PowerPC.

ANONYMOUS  Hi,

I was surprised that MacUpdate had updated the product page, because I had not submitted the information about the new version yet. I guess they got it somehow from CNet. I will update the product page.

To answer your question:

The BirthdayScanner X does:

- add up to 3 customized Alarms to the Birthday Event

- also creates iCal Events for other Dates, like Anniversaries

- the resulting Calendar is a normal calendar, not write protected, so you can modify it to your hearts content

- the Events show the Age of the person

- Finally, you can also just export an ICS file, that way you can import your Address Book birthdays into any other calendar apps, even if not on Mac.

Cheers, Thomas

ENDORPHINITY  What is the point of this utility if Leopard's iCal itself includes 'Show Birthdays calendar' option in preferences? Would be useful, if the author have stressed this app's peculiarity and what makes it different.

DONEBYLEE  The most obvious from looking at the screen capture would be the ability to set alerts for birthdays, something that Leopard does not let you do.
