DESCRIPTION
CheckSpell is spellchecking service for Mac OS X. It just adds Polish, Czech, Lithuanian, Slovak and Ukrainian dictionaries to the systemwide spellchecking.

Warning! To prevent technical conflicts, and for the users convenience, this installer will automatically remove the alternative spelling checker called cocoAspell.

CheckSpell uses the same engine and dictionaries, as used by recent versions of the OpenOffice software package.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.3:
  • Loading of each dictionary is suspended until it is really used
  • Overall performance should be slightly better now
  • The memory footprint should be reduced significantly at runtime
  • The top level readme from the installation image will now have a translated name - however only a polish translation exists for now
Version 1.2:
  • Added support for Latvian language
  • Minor bugfixes
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

G7  It's a great system component, much better than cocoAspell (i.e. faster and compatible with more applications, including iWork).

However, it's sad we have to download and install it manually. Apple should have included it with OS X, because Polish is one of the officially supported languages in the system. Mac OS X 10.5 is localized in Polish, yet Apple did not supply *any* Polish spelling component with the system.  (Version 1.2)

GLOBETROTTERDK  It is good to see developers step into the gaping hole left by Apple not adding spelling support for the languages that OS X is localized for. Many multi-linguists have been orphaned by Apple's (lack?) of policy in this area.

Unfortunately, it is unclear from the website if CheckSpell supports other OpenOffice.org dictionaries such as Indonesian, Latvian, etc (anyone understand Polish?). It would also be interesting to know if CheckSpell avoids having to restart the specific app when changing dictionary language, which plagues cocoAspell.  (Version 1.1)
