RAMPANCY  Looks like they jumped the gun prematurely - according to AppleInsider, Apple sprang a surprise last-minute extra build of 10.5.7 to its developers which no one expected.

Still doesn't explain why they're talking about 10.7, though. :)

MR.ASH  Since installing the new version 2.3.2.1 GIMP won't work correctly anymore. After starting X11 the screen turns black/white and als fonts in the windows and menu bars are too big. I don't even see the OSX menubar anymore, so the only solution to is to force quit X11 so i can return to the desktop. This release is very buggy!

CHRISCHRAM  WARNING: Be sure to have a good system backup before installing version 2.2.1. YMMV, but it rendered my Early 2006 iMac unbootable. Thank the gods for Time Machine!

JEREMYHU  We've had no reports of this problem from anyone else. Please file a bug report at http://xquartz.macosforge.org and we'll help you, but there's really no way why this should cause your computer to not boot since it doesn't do anything to the boot process.

BIGDAVE56  I give this release 5 stars for the simple reason that it finally ended the nightmare that has been X11 since Leopard. That started out with X11 apps (main ones I have used are GIMP, Gimpshop, and more recently Inkscape) launching and turning up in the Dock but never opening a window. About four months later, things had progressed to the point where I could open the GIMP. actually get a window up, and apply between 3 and 8 clone stamp edits before GIMP crashed. Inkscape continued to not even bring up a window. It launches now but stability not tested yet. And it isn't even represented as Leopard compatible. GIMP tested OK and may actually be usable now. Thanks to the XQuartz community for making X11 useful again.

FREEBSD  I've been following this community supported project since the shipping version of Leopard's X11 and Xquartz were hopelessly broken (officially as of 10.5.1).

The support has included a number of key members of the Free Desktop project as well as others in the community who have managed to make an incredibly easy to use installation that is for the most part reasonably stable.

The codebase has changed from the XFree86 implementation to X.org, which is a significant change and possibly the key reason for the X11 growing pains.

However this release supports most basic functions of X11, stuff we normally take for granted but was broken, including suitable UI behavior, alt+tabbing, and proper OS X window management.

Their package release is so great because it updates a number of supporting files and binaries that most users don't ever see.

Despite having a few funny bugs remaining, it's completely recommended for all users of Leopard who need or may need X11.

A sincere thanks to the developers who continue to work on this project!

NEONBLUE2  Found this a little over a week ago while looking for a more recent version of Gimp. They recommended it and I don't regret it.

DOGBERT1  If you use Linotype FontExplorer, do not install this software. It breaks FontExplorer and there is no way that I can see to revert to the old X11 as there is no uninstaller. I have tried installing the older X11 from the install disk and X11 no longer works. I had to reinstall the XQuartz and disable FontExplorer.

DEPPIX  Dogbert1: What is the conflict you have with FontExplorer X? I have it running and don't seem to have any conflicts. Also, you may want to move the following file to see if XQuartz 2.1.1 is really the soruce of your problems:

/System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.x.fontconfig.plist

That's the only thing I could (remotely) see interfering with FontExplorer X.

DOGBERT1  You are right. I spent part of two days figuring this out. XQuartz was not the problem, but it showed up a previously existing conflict that hadn't been causing problems. I removed the other software and both FontExplorer and the new Xquartz are happily coexisting. Thanks for the quick response.

MARK EVERITT  Excellent. A must have if you use fink or ssh with X-tunneling. It gets rid of that annoying yellow cursor thing and a bunch of other gripes.
