DESCRIPTION
Things is task management solution that helps to organize your tasks in an elegant and intuitive way. Things combines powerful features with simplicity through the use of tags and its intelligent filter bar. A Leopard style source list allows for quick and easy focusing. Together with a beautiful user interface, Things aims at the seemingly impossible: making task management both easy and fun.

Our screencast is a great introduction. Learn from our users why Things is different ? either on i use this or Newsvine.

  • The big picture. A Leopard style source list lets you easily focus without ever switching view modes or wrapping your head around filter criteria.
  • A magical tag bar automatically appears when needed and adapts to the currently displayed list. It lets you drill down even the longest list of To-Dos. Hierarchical tags? We got you covered!
  • Teamwork. Things offers convenient collaboration features. Easily delegate tasks to members of your team. (This is work in progress.)
  • No columns! Whether it's multiple tags, dates or notes, To-Do items display their information on an as needed basis. No more space wasted by empty or irrelevant column cells!
  • Out of your head, out of your way. A quick entry HUD lets you enter any idea the moment it hits you. Never let the thought of an unfinished business distract you again.
  • Yours forever. We won't lock you in. Things will use an open XML file format to store your data. (Not yet activated.)
  • Things even supports GTD, so if you're familiar and comfortable with GTD concepts, you'll feel right at home.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2.10:
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in items unexpectedly appearing in the Inbox after syncing.

KRIT  Maybe you should take a look at www.doit.im

Things might be a BMW, Doit.im is the Volkswagen. It'is affordable (FREE) and has online sync, multi platform and has a kind of familiar look.

(I am using Things at home, but have to use a PC at work, so I was looking for something similar)

KERNELPANIC  Is there any way of syncing with iphone without wi-fi? Say, using USB cable or bluetooth?

The reason I'm asking this because I use my iphone for tethering with macbook pro and when I'm out we're not on any wireless network.

To sync I both devices together I need to temporarily create an weak, WEP secured, wifi network with macbook and then connect my iphone to it.

ALGOS  From the Things wiki at culturedcode.com:

"Syncing via USB cable or Bluetooth is technically not possible for third party applications from the App Store. That's why Things uses Wi-Fi."

PIK80  Yes! I have really wanted to be able to do this as well and no you can't do it at the moment. You can't do it with Things or any other third party app. The reason for this is that Apple doesn't provide the developers with the adequate tools to do this it has nothing to do with Cultered Code. I got blasted for bringing this topic up on a iPod Touch review at Amazon with people telling me it wasn't an import feature. But it is. Our company chooses to not have WiFi for the sole reason of WiFi being very insecure. If you have any confidential information on your computer it is much easier for people to hack into if you are using WiFi.

SCOTTGSMITH62  You folks are funny - you sound like religous zeolots, or better yet, groupies. This is just software people - it helps you get stuff done, and to attach so much emotion to it, is pretty pathetic. On second thought, Things is probably just right for people like you.

I don't give a crap if they "copied" anything... What this tells me is that is must not be that hard to make something that works as good as Things, and if they can do it for free, then Cultured Code is a effing rip-off for sure. If you don't like it, screw you.

For the moron that said something about the misplaced comment, you must have your head stuffed up your butt. This site is about software, and I made a comment about software - bite me idiot.

This is so fun - you people are too easy to get riled up :)

KENBOTWINICK  >you sound like religous zeolots, or better yet, groupies.

Um, I think I sounded like a morally, ethically, and legally justified and outraged citizen on the right side of the law. If you want to keep promoting blatant intellectual property theft, more power to you. And like I said, hopefully someday you have the same done to you and your livelihood will be stolen from you...

> This is just software people

Um, no... Actually it's principle. But I guess you have none, so never mind...

> I don't give a crap if they "copied" anything...

And if anything is ever stolen from you, I also will not give a crap...

> What this tells me is that is must not be that hard to make something that works as good as Things

Actually if you had half a brain, you'd understand it means the complete opposite. If it were that easy to come up with some new and simple method, why didn't they come up with their own new and simple method? Ever heard of "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"? Theft on the other hand is uncool.

Oh and by the way, it should be "as WELL as Things". Back to that half a brain problem...

> and if they can do it for free, then Cultured Code is a effing rip-off for sure.

Um, you're amazingly naive. They're not doing it for free. According to the other poster, their business model is simply ADVERTISING instead of charging you. It might be free for you to use, but they are not doing it for free... How much work do you do for free?

> For the moron that said something about the misplaced comment, you must have your head stuffed up your butt. This site is about software, and I made a comment about software - bite me idiot.

Um, I'm pretty sure this site is NOT about promoting blatant intellectual property theft. MacUpdate, please correct me if I'm wrong about that...

SCOTTGSMITH62  Actually, there is a completely viable alternative to Things, and it is called Doit.im. It is an Adobe Air application that runs on both Mac and Windows and is FREE!

The application allows the user to sync to the company website and the syncing has been flawless for me.

The application has some very minor rough edges, but it basically does what Things does, but cross-platform and free.

The company website is: http://www.doit.im/

I am not affiliated with the company at all, I just like the app.

Enjoy :)

SCOTTGSMITH62  The website indicates that Doit.im currently supports the Android OS, and more phones support is coming. Honestly do not know if that will include the iPhone or not... it just says "more phone support coming".

Also, the the application includes collaboration; sending tasks to another user of Doit.im, sending messages to other users and sending feedback to the developer from within the application.

KENBOTWINICK  I'm not overly thrilled with the pace of Things development, but I would NEVER support that doit crap! What a complete and total rip off! Let's take someone else's hard work, copy it almost EXACTLY (I mean, it's RIDICULOUSLY BLATANT), and then give it away for free? That's freakin' BS. If I were Cultured Code, I'd pursue legal action... Oh wait… They're all Chinese. That explains everything…

Hey Scott Smith, what do you do for work? I wonder if I can copy it, give it away for free, and then steal the food out of your family's mouths…

S_ENGEL  You have to register to use Doit.im. Have you read the Doit.im service Terms?

"You understand and agree that the Doit.im Services may include advertisements and that these advertisements are necessary for Doit.im to provide the Doit.im Services. You also understand and agree that the Doit.im Services may include certain communications from Doit.im, such as service announcements, administrative messages and the Doit.im Newsletter, and that these communications are considered part of Doit.im membership and you will not be able to opt out of receiving them. "

"certain communications"? No opt out? And it is a chinese software... ;-) Enough reasons for me NOT to install this crap. Sorry, SCOTTGSMITH62, your recommendation is useless and totally misplaced.

STEVEN GOODHEART  I own and use OmniFocus and The HitList...but always keep an eye on Things to see if it's evolving/improving, since the perfect PIM has yet to be created, and I have no loyalty to any particular software -- if I find something better, I'm there.

So, what I see, especially since the addition of the programmer who created the brilliant, but fairly short-lived iGTD, is that the pace of improvement and changes with Things has been quite impressive....way more often and significant than my other PIMs (though in fairness to OmniFocus, they got so much right, I don't really expect big changes there, though they keep refining it. The HitList already has a terrific, intuitive interface, but my impression is that the focus seems to be getting synching and the iPhone thing going. In that area, OmniFocus is the gold-standard.)

Anyway, kudos to the Things folks. They are really improving their program. For example, this new list of changes and additions shows some real intelligence and definitely improves the functionality of the program. I'm impressed. Maybe not enough to buy yet *another* PIM -- I think I have a PIM addiction problem -- but if the program continues to improve at this rate and show such intelligence in changes to the interface/functionality, it's going to do just fine and win lots of new users.

JAN13  OK, OK so I did pull a plug and spent those zillion $$$ on this app. Well for simple reason, there is nothing around today which can be so simply streamlined and to point as this application.

To say that, there is a problem with syncing Scheduled events to iPhone 3Gs at this moment, something which was forgotten in advertisement for this application ... I hope, that they will fix it asap., LOL, then this application will stay on my desktop 100%!

So my initial summary is, that it is not so bad as matter of fact it is not dad at all ... As I say, simple, to point and it is doing a good job in reminding me to pay my bills on time !
