DESCRIPTION

NTFS for Mac OS X beats down the barriers between Windows and Mac OS X. Effectively solves the communication problems between the Mac system and NTFS, providing full read and write access to Windows NTFS partitions under Mac OS X. Excellent solution for end users, SOHO and Enterprise, supports all NTFS versions from Windows NT 3.1 to Windows Vista (NTFS versions 1.2, 3.0 and 3.1) and mounts the NTFS volumes as native ones.

NTFS for Mac OS X allows you to:

  • Natively read and write your data to any Windows NTFS partition.
  • Easily transfer data between Windows and Mac computers using external or thumb drives with NTFS partitions.
  • Access NTFS partitions without having any complex translation applications or file services like AFP or Samba protocols.
WHAT'S NEW

  • Improved performance
  • Full support for the latest Mac OS X Snow Leopard (in 32 and 64-bit mode)
  • delivers a read only version of HFS for Windows

SCHMIEGEL  After 10.6.4 update on my iMac and last security updates on my PowerBook (10.5) the driver crashes both Macs if an NTFS-Disk is mounted. Uninstaller doesn't work (says it's not installed). Deleted everything by hand. I will not rate it because it was't the actual version.

LOPOZ  I've just installed Paragon v8 and have to say it works quite well.

I copied over a 1,5GB file and it wrote at a steady 20-25 MB/s, which is quite good, I think.

I switched from Tuxera NTFS as that one has a problem with reporting the free disk space on the NTFS volumes it manages. Paragon has no such problems and reports remaining disk space perfectly.

Overall I haven't been using it for very long, but initial impressions are good.

Note: I'm running Snow Leopard, but not in 64-bit kernel, so I can't comment on stability of the 64-bit driver.

ROAMING NOMAD  I don't know what the pure newb BS is from a few people claiming this software works. 90% of the people that have tried this software all said that it was unstable and has caused data corruption on their NTFS volumes.

I purchased 6.5 last year, a few months later version 7 was announce and I was offered a chance to pay for the upgrade. Now a few months later again another paid upgrade to 8. WTF!

This company is a complete ripoff

- 3 paid upgrades in 1 year

- Lousy tech support

It's too bad this company doesn't reside in North America because myself and many others would have sued them for false advertising and for fraud. I paid for their software that never worked properly and then they wanted me to pay for a new version that supposedly addressed the problems I had.

Despicable company I spit on you!

FORAGING FERRET  I love this software, it's so seamless that I often forget I have it installed. I am able to write to NTFS volumes so quickly and easily right from the Finder, and the only visible trace of the software is a preference pane, where you can manually disable the driver (should you need to).

Perfect if you have an NTFS Boot Camp volume running Vista or Win 7.

It still baffles me that Apple don't offer NTFS write functionality in OS X. I think it's about time, what with the switch to Intel, Boot Camp, and the influx of Windows users that are currently switching to Macs.

WHOGBEN  WARNING on PARAGON NTFS for MAC OS X

I installed the Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX Trial today on a bog standard first generation Intel Mac Pro, running 10.5.7 and no other mods.

The installation asked for my password twice, which struck me as odd - but I did not have the foresight to cancel it. When asked to restart after successful completion I complied, and that's when the trouble started.

The computer restarted with nothing showing on the two standard Apple Cinema Displays. The fans which once used to adjust to the activity level of the computer are now constantly on high. The computer otherwise seems functional, despite that fact that it cannot find or display on any monitor in the house.

I accessed the computer over the network using screen sharing and ran the uninstaller for Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX - however this had no effect on the problems. In the system profiler under Graphics/Displays it says the system does not contain any supported devices.

Just how much damage the Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX trial managed I do not know. I know that the symptoms have stopped the computer from being usable, and include the system fans (& whatever system controls those) as well.

A quick trip to the Paragon support forums revealed a host of different problems people are experiencing, none of which were answered by Paragon.

I am writing to forewarn you, if there is any way you can avoid rolling the dice with Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX please do so, the results are unpredictable and in my case incapacitated the computer. Other people in the forums reported corruption of their NTFS and FAT partions causing complete data loss, and other issues that did not resolve themselves when Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX was uninstalled.

Do yourself a favor and steer clear - I certainly won't risk any other Paragon trials. I'm spending my day remote reinstalling Leopard in the hope it will resolve these issues - I hope by reading this you'll save yourself and your business that time.
