KAWAII  Ignore this; MacUpdate is filled with idiots. I downloaded pacifist, extracted the updater and found it wasn't required.

I'll put money on it some idiot from MacUpdate assumed that 'page updated' equals 'new package'. Not the first time MacUpdate has done something moronic.

JOSHMUNKEY  KAWAII- the update was posted on apple's site on the 10th, and is listed on apple's official download page in between recent security upgrade links. the "more information" link yields a page with this on it:

Version: 1.0.2

Post Date: September 10, 2009

Download ID: DL938

it is indeed a newly posted firmware update- yet for whatever reason, it's not updating apparently for systems that are within the described specs.

DENNISMORIARTY  The developers need to take their iPods off and concentrate on their tasks! The indications suggest the Firmware Update is pertinent to my graphics card Yet (once downloaded) says I do not need it. Perhaps this is meant to distract me from the buggy mail problems generated by upgrading to Snow Leopard and not addressed by todays 10.6.1 update! A formally allegiant and dedicated Apple user feeling frayed!

JOSHMUNKEY  also not working on my imac (3.06ghz, 24" early 2008 w/10.5.8). from the looks of things this is not specific to Leopard/Snow Leopard. the better question is, for who did this actually work for?

KAWAII  From the sounds of things reading the Apple thread, Apple didn't include the necessary digital signing to allow a firmware upgrade to take place. The digital signing of firmware updates was put into place recently after a security expert noted that one could hack the keyboard using a malicious firmware update.

DEMOLITION  I tried to apply Firmware Update 1.0.2 to a 20" iMac 2.0 GHz (Mid-2007) with a Radeon HD 2400XT, but a drop-down sheet informed me that it doesn't need this update.

Makes me think that this new firmware might be rolled into the Snow Leopard 10.6.1 update which was released today. I had updated to 10.6.1 just before trying to install this new firmware.

STAR-AFFINITY  If you've clicked the "For detailed information on this update, please visit this website" you'd see:

"It updates the graphics firmware on the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO card to address issues that may have caused the computer to freeze.

Not every 20-inch and 24-inch aluminum iMac computer requires this update. If you are not automatically presented with this update, your computer does not need it."

BONTFAEN  Software update doesn't choose the latest Apple Imac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 my iMac 2.8 Ghz 24" Mid 2007 iMac.

I have definitely had the occasional freeze as described by others although this was mainly using 10.4.10.

It seems more stable since upgrading to Leopard.

What concerns me is not knowing exactly what the latest firmware is correcting and why this isn't necessary for all new Mid 2007 iMacs?

I'm sure it would be comforting fro all new iMac owners to know how they can be certain how and why their new iMac is definitely not affected?

BONTFAEN  Thanks for attempting to clarify the situation, I had already the link on apple's sit before posting this comment. The paragraph I believe which could be expanded a little is:

"Not every 20-inch and 24-inch aluminum iMac computer requires this update. If you are not automatically presented with this update, your computer does not need it."

What this or the rest of this article doesn't say is what exactly is the problem that is being corrected and why some iMacs are not affected and don't need their Graphic card's firmware? Most people would like to know a little more than this, to reassure them in a more specific way so they can check for themselves.

I personally like more control rather than rely on a message like, "don't worry if I don't call you you don't need this update" - I would prefer "Relax the problem is with ???? & all Radeon 2600 Pro cars with ROM Revision: 113-B2250F-212 & EFI Driver Version: 01.00.212 are unaffected beacuse????
