DESCRIPTION
Scribblet... Thoughts or ideas can come to us at any time. If you're like me, perhaps you jot these down in text files and clutter up your desktop. Scribblet is my answer to this problem. It is quick to open - as it conveniently runs in the menu bar - and an uncluttered interface makes it simple to use.

Please do e-mail me with your comments and suggestions, bug reports and questions. Thank you.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.5.1:
  • Fixed Scribblet window always opening on application launch.
  • Fixed duplication of note when changing the name of a file to that of another existing file.
  • Changed focus to Scribblet text box after adding or editing a file.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

PROLIX  I used the earlier versions of Scribblet every now and again but didn't find it quite right for my purposes. This latest update (1.5) though has seen the multiple notes feature added and that's made a world of difference to how useful I find the application. I've now imported all of my old to-do text files which were cluttering up my desktop and can view and edit them all from within Scribblet, which sits quietly in the menu bar waiting for my call. Scribblet has gone from a useable luxury to a fully functional everyday application, I've even put it in my startup list!

TWISTERMC  Very cool little app. Only major missing item is a way to quit the app when you have it set to open the Scribblet window when you click on them menu bar icon.

TEKL  This is a really nice notepad. Very clean and slim interface and not bloated with lots of functions like similar apps.

Some thing's I'm still missing:

1. An option where to save the note file would be nice. Okay I could use a symlink, but an official way is a bit nicer. I would like to save my note onto my iDisk. May mobileme-sync could be an alternative.

2. An option to autosave 5 seconds after the last input, so I won't loose anything when my Mac crashes while the window is visible. Autosave should be done with a temp file, so when the computer crashes while saving I won't loose everything.

3. A way to assign Hotkeys without modifier keys. I would like to assign F13 with Scribblet. (Btw. F13 is not shown at the moment)

4. When Scribblet is visible in the background the hotkey should bring it back to the front instead of closing it (maybe optional)

5. The window should remember its position after quitting.

6. When closing the window the focus should go back to the last active app, so I can look to the note, close it and continue writing without clicking onto the last window

7. Nice would be a customizable background colour

8. If possible the green button in the titlebar should resize the window to fit the content like in Safari.

9. An option to hide the menubar icon so Scribblet is completely invisible.

10. There's no Hotkey for the perferences (normally Cmd+, on German keyboard)

Sorry for my bad english.

Btw. are interested in a German localization?

DRYOGI  Love love love this little app. So clean and simple. Exactly what I needed.

Would love to keep it just as simple, but also have the option of pasting a small graphic that I might want to use at a later time.

Another thing is that if we wanted to put a todo list in scribblets, maybe a little checkbox option to add anywhere within the note.

THese features are not absolutely necessarily and I will still continue to use it!

MECHAMANIA  Great little app. Very quick, and does what it says.

The one thing I would like to see that doesn't seem to be there yet is window scrolling with the mouse wheel.

THATINKJAR  Hello,

Thank you for the kind words - they are much appreciated. And thank you for letting me know about this scrolling problem.

I actually received a very similar bug report last week, and I'm at a loss to understand what is causing this. Scrolling should just work.

Could you e-mail me at thatinkjar@me.com when you have a moment? I would like to ask you a few questions relating to this. Hopefully I can then uncover the root cause and fix it.

Thanks for your help.

KARENWALLACE  I switched from sidenote. I kept accidentally triggering sidenote by moving my mouse to its edge of the screen, and I'd frequently find that either (1) I was typing in sidenote when I hadn't meant to be, or (2) I was trying to type in/copy from sidenote and it had somehow lost focus. Scribblet has a nice configurable global hotkey, and it's an actual window that doesn't slide in and out, so when you're typing in it, it doesn't try to disappear, but it is easily dismissed with the common cmd-W shortcut when you're done with it. I could do with bolding, but I'm quite content without.

THATINKJAR  Hi there,

Ooh... a switcher! :) You're my new favourite person! I, too, used to be a user of Sidenote, and I would also accidentally trigger the window by mistake. It is a fantastic application, though, and the developer has clearly put a lot of time and effort into it. Scribblet still has a long way to go!

Thank you for your kind comments about Scribblet, though. I'm really pleased to hear you find it so useful, and hopefully you’ll enjoy new versions in the future as well.

In regards to your comments about bolding... you should be able to do this. Command + B is the shortcut to bold any selected text. Alternatively, you can press the Font button on the toolbar to bring up the Font window to customise the text further.

Does this help? Please let me know if you're still having any problems.

Kind regards,

Jon

KARENWALLACE  Wow, totally overlooked those buttons -- I have good tunnel vision. I'm accustomed to using the keyboard shortcuts for formatting and *thought* I'd tried bolding, but clearly I was wrong! They work fine. My apologies for being a dunce -- it doesn't appear that I can change my original review.

MACENOUGH  Hi,

Thank you so much for your work.

I really enjoy Scribblet simplicity.

One thing though:

Sometimes I just need to have a quick look at the Scribblet window: As it is now, I hit my customized hot key (shift+tab) to evoke Scribblet and then have to press cmd+w to close it. Its just a tiny little annoyance and I almost fell spoiled to ask you this, but would it be possible to use the same hotkey shortcut to both close and open Scribblet?

Thanks once more,

HAZMAT  Pretty handy. Could you make an option to open the window just by clicking the menu bar icon? Maybe command+click to get the menu itself or something.

Thanks.

GHOKIE  Looks like a helpful little program but could not get it to launch (showed up in the menu bar, but that was all).

Tried both v1.2 and v1.2.1 today. OS 10.4.11.

THATINKJAR  Hi,

Thank you for letting me know about this. Could you e-mail me at thatinkjar@googlemail.com with any more details?

I will be installing a copy of 10.4 on my second Mac before the weekend, so that I can thoroughly test Tiger compatibility prior to future releases.

Thank you,

Jon

HAZMAT  When it's open, hit Expose. I found it popped up a welcome window in the background, so I couldn't use any menu items until I clicked OK.

Dev: please do something about this. Most people probably won't think to check for something like this and just think the app doesn't work.

RAMPANCY  1.2 crashes on startup for me, while 1.1 worked before. 10.4.11, MacBook Pro C2D 2.16 Ghz/2 GB RAM. I can send a crash log if it might be helpful.

(Disclaimer: I do run APE, and 1.1 did crash until I set APE to exclude Scribblet, whereupon it worked fine afterwards.)
